My advice is always try to register your own domain because of the content ownership and control. Wordpress is an excellent option for blogs and can be hacked into a CMS for most types of websites. Last time I checked Tumblr was reasonably SEO friendly. I am researching Posterous and believe that is a good option and can connect a social media hub of sites.
