LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES

Wise people don't always wait to make mistakes of their own, sometimes they learn from the mistakes of others. As freelancers, we have all made mistakes in our quest to succeed and I believe we can all learn from each other's mistakes and avoid them. What mistakes have you made in your freelancer career that someone else can learn from? What business do you regret starting? What scam sites would you advice others to avoid?

I regret starting taking surveys for one particular company that I will not mention here. But let me tell you-that was a scam! I would answer a few questions sometimes, sometimes even more than a few-more than ten and they would tell me that I am not suitable to answer the remaining questions. And yes, they would not pay me for my effort! Google and read about scam sites and companies because there are lot of companies out there who are not legit!

From my experience with surveys sites, 90% of all of them are all scams and never pays for the job well done.

This is actually one of the main reasons why I hate carrying out any kind of survey except for Prize Rebel survey sites jobs.

Alymae
Yes. It is a waste of time and certainly not worth it. I have answered surveys for some sites and even if they pay, they pay very late. My last payout came six weeks later after finishing the survey. It is really not good.

At least you have been paid but I have not been paid for any survey at all.

I agree with you. She is very lucky that she has been paid out.

Yeah that's true, it very rare for such things to happen.

Survey is not for everyone. It depends on the location for available survey. There are paying but mostly are failing. Yes, you are right. It's a good experience to take survey job especially when you got payment.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yeah it's true that location has a lot of role to play but some don't pay too.

One lit survey site which I have been using for several years now is Rakuten. It's available globally and I make between $35 to $25 per month from it. It's not much but it's only for 5-10 minutes a day. It has a $35 withdrawal threshold and pays via PayPal or gift cards. Also you can try InstaGC which also pays about $35-$35 a month, it has a $3 withdrawal threshold and I've been using it for 2 years now.

You are right. It is a waste of time. I did not experience payout ever since I took surveys.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah and it's going to take almost like eternity to pay.

I don't even waste time with surveys sites since my country hardly have a survey router so I rather spend my time on other sites that will be worthwhile.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jeffreyjose48
You are right. Other sites are worthwhile than that of survey sites.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yeah, I prefer to just read news and do other things than survey.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
It's the same with me, I just don't waste my precious time since my location almost isn't great with survey.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yeah that's true, I have never received any paid since I stared taking online survey for over few weeks so I stopped it entirely, I believe they are all fake.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The same is true with my experience with taking surveys. I have not receive my pay out.

I wouldn't consider taking surveys or completing tasks in general as actual freelancing, though. For me, freelancing is about you offering a service or making something. That's an important distinction I think we should have clear.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
I also wasted about two weeks of my time in a survey site that supposedly was legit. Surprise, it wasn't. When the time came for the payout, they didn't deliver.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Mine was similar, I waited for the survey for almost a month and still continue to increase the earnings with hope to receive pay one day until I noticed it was scam.

My first ever freelancing job was taking surveys and for a short time, I stuck with it thinking that I'll be able to get some money over time. I didn't know about the other freelancing jobs before. Haha

I too started with survey before learning about more freelance opportunity by then I have already been working almost for free.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think most survey sites are like that. They always tell you that you aren't qualified for their survey even after answering a lot of questions. In my opinion survey sites in general is a waste of time. It takes awhile to get a new survey even if the site might be legit. This was also a mistake I made starting out as a freelancer.

Some survey sites are okay but generally speaking they’re slow going. I always remind myself that they’re not my priority and only really work on them when there are particular high paying surveys or when I’ve got nothing else placing demands on my time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jelineex
i agree with you. Survey aren't for everyone. It depends on the location. Others are too lucky to experience it with legitimacy but it is also of slow and meager payment. It depends on a person to keep on working or just to stop it. But, somehow it's a good experience. It contributes a wise insights in freelancing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wow I also learnt from your mistakes too, I won't take any survey that am not certain about.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jeffreyjose48
The same is true with me. I also regret taking surveys. I have already spent 20 minutes answering questions at the end the survey will say that it is eaten up by someone.

In my experience you should stay clear of so-called earning sites and apps which has a high withdrawal threshold. Sites which you have to work for months before you could reach their threshold and withdraw are mostly scam sites.

No one is above making mistakes or doing something which they ended up regretting on the long run in the future. What matters most is learning from your mistakes and being a better person tomorrow whether it's a work or personal related matter.

Very true learning from our own mistakes at times its so much devastating and unreliable but once you overcome it it gives a chance to move forwad

When we make a mistake, that is where we learn. What's important is we learn from it and profit from it. I have made my series of mistakes. Done things that landed me into a difficult situation but what I learned from them is to be responsible in your actions, not to give up, and treasure what you have. Whether its job, family, and friends.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

In freelancing, it is always important that we don't give up. This is something that is necessary especially when we are looking at the challenges that comes with trying to be at the top of your game.

Yes, I agree with you. Mistakes is a learning process. It will help us improve and develop our ways of life. Our thinking is will be smarter than those days. It's best not to give up on whatever trials that come our way. We just have to be positive on our outlooks.

The mistakes I've learned from is not taking PTCs as serious businesses. Some are reliable, but the pay rate is laughable. Some people might earn nicely, but the effort put never guarantees sustainability and you definitely don't want to take this as your only way to earn a living.

Believe in yourself. I was one of those that doubted what I can achieve for so long as I was always faced with the question of whether I was good enough. I think everything changed when I began getting compliments from the clients that I work for.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, I agree with you. Believing yourself is always the key to success. This is a good motivation drive to do better regardless of difficulties along the way. Like the famous proverb " When there's a will, there's a way"

I've got one tip to avoid scam sites and that's to google for scam revoews. Just Google the "name of the site" followed by "scam reviews", and you'll get all the vital information on the site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks for this tip! It sure will save me a lot of time next time I'm doing background checks on a particular site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. I've been a victim of some money earning apps and sites before. But after that, I always make sure that I checked the reviews first before joining or signing up in any site or app.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah it's better to check if the website is legit or scam before doing some work. No matter how great the offered opportunity is, be sure that your time and effort will not be wasted. I usually search in Google and YouTube for reviews on a particular website.

I think mistakes is part of our life. Without it, our life would be boring. Mistakes motivates us to do better. I stumbled on scam sites and encountered employers who hide under the legitimacy of a site but never paid on rendered services. But, it never made me discouraged to go on working. It drives me to be careful and encourage myself to seek better alternatives in freelancing.

Trusting a client and only asking for half the payment. When I delivered, he disappeared completely. Ever since that happened, I charge 100% of the fee first. One can't be too trusting nowadays.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Ouch, that hurts.

That story is a good lesson for everybody: don't be too trusting of others, especially strangers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It sure was a disappointment. To make matters worse, it was my second freelance work I had ever done. After the client disappeared, I even thought about abandoning freelance jobs. I managed to soldier on and haven't regretted it! But this definitely taught me to be wary.

I used to tell myself when it comes to money matter we can't be too sure with anyone.people can be very unfair when it comes to money matters. It better to charge one upfront get paid and deliver the job accordingly.

One of the mistakes I made was expecting too much payment when I didn't have experience yet. I used to advertise my writing services for about 10 usd per hour, and that led to no clients since they could just hired a semi-experienced writer for 5 usd an hour instead of hiring an unexperienced one for 10 usd per hour. When I went down to 3 usd an hour, I finally got clients and managed to build my experience.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Have you started charging more to your clients, since you've already gained some experience? I never know when I should make the leap and start asking for a better payment.

I still believe that experience is the best teacher especially when it concerns learning something from a mistake. What I regret doing was not giving my best during tests because I still have that issue with exams where I just zone out and get bored. In most aspects of my life I am well disciplined of course I can't be perfect and I have issues with it on other aspects. Anyway, just make sure to follow the instructions.

I remember when I was first starting, I encountered a client that asked me to do something for him as a test. The problem was the sheet has 1,000 entries to do. He thinks that he can con me for doing something for him completely free. I turned down that guy.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

knnon
There's always going to be conman like him around. They always target newbies to get freebies. I remember my first time dealing with a scammer, he gave me the instructions. Even showed a sample PDF of what I'll be needing to retype, then he asks me to make a deposit of $40 for my 20 pages of work, I think his offer was about $240 for 20 pages. Turned him down. Then reported him.

Why do those people even exist? Can they do something that will give them pride or something and not scam people? What happened to you was a perfect example of a real con artist.

It was good to know that we learned from our past mistakes. Just like what I always said, failures are not the opposite of success but rather part of success and sometimes God allows us to fail not because we are failures but because God wants us to learn something from that experience. So never waste your storm without learning a lesson and never waste your trials without growing up. People who failed to learn from their mistakes are condemned to repeat it.

Might sound silly but I’d say my biggest mistake when I was starting out was to be overly loyal. I was working freelance for a startup company who paid less than what my writing was worth, but I wanted to see them succeed so I stuck with them.

Long story short, the company is no longer in existence and I wish I’d moved on faster!

Learning from mistakes of others take a genius, while we common folk usually learn from our own. Personally, the whole problem with learning from your own mistakes is to admit them, to overcome the ego that you were wrong. That's the primary problem people have, and once including myself as well.

I was doing freelance for Digital Marketing(Seo), But i don't regret for the mistakes i did. I learnt a lot from my mistakes & it took me to the next level. So I would say sometimes mistakes are good.

I am still on the process of working as a freelancer. One thing I've learned personally is to never expect that much when doing content either for domestic or international client. On the other hand, I've learned from other freelancers to be careful in dealing with clients outside the platform. Someone told me a client never paid after the work has been done leaving her without pay for an articles she had been working hard.

I think I made a lot of mistakes and it can be overwhelming for me to keep up with those mistakes. For example I have not learned how to interact with people to get new gigs for the freelancing. And another thing is that I have yet to establish myself on the work and the social discipline way. So learning experience always vary. I may have to change a lot of my old habits because I think with age changes it's always better to understand our own limits.

Learning from our mistakes is really a good teacher for us to be a good person since it teach us on the best technique and possible way to make things run smooth and conveniently. I really believe that through mistakes we learned some lessons that we can really used for our day to day life here on earth and on our freelancing career.

I just started freelancing myself, and I think mistakes can't really be avoided if we want to be successful at anything. Experience and failures are the best teachers but I think preparation and advance research is the key if we want to be avoid the simple mistakes and failures that won't help us move forward.

A mistake that I have learned from is to value my time more and think it thoroughly before accepting any jobs. I wasted a lot of time making projects for other people that were not completed just because they lost interest or just made the idea for fun. What I learned from that is most of the people just don't care about your time and effort, they only care about their own. So now I value my time more and will only look for clients that I can see is serious on finishing what they started.

That is very true, one needs to learn from his own mistakes and also from the mistakes that others do when it comes to the field of Freelancing. I think the biggest mistake that I might have done with my Freelancing work is starting late in this carrier. I think that if I had started earlier in this field I would have been able to achieve considerable knowledge and success in the field by now.

As a freelancer, I made the mistake of trying to get as much work as I can not knowing the limitations of my very own self. I did get burned out because of the amount of work I did. My advice is to take jobs that you can only cater to and deliver with the best results.

During my first days of my freelancing career I undervalued myself, I worked for free and now I regret it so hard. I've realized I shouldn't have worked for free just because I'm new, I wasn't happy with my work so I told them that they shouldn't pay me. I know it's stupid but I'm not doing that again.

Everything we are exposed to in life presents us with another valuable lesson. Not only can you learn from your own experiences, but also the experiences of the people you surround yourself with. Sometimes these can serve as the most meaningful lessons since it allows you to observe behaviors from an objective standpoint.

I know that I have made many mistakes in my freelancing career but I cannot remember it right now for I am busy with my work. But one thing that I can say is the attitude of some admin that I should have confronted. I have encountered arrogant forum admins as if they are the most intelligent and I just let it pass for the sake of my peace of mind. But now I am ready to tell it to their face what they should hear.
