How to promote myself as a freelancer artist?

I draw in ink and pencil and post it to some social media sites such as reddit, devianart, instagram, etc...

I'm thinking about starting a patreon and I would like advice on how to promote myself across all of these sites in a more effective way. What strategies have worked for you?

I agree with you. Social Media like Facebook is helpful in spreading an information of a product/services due to the large number of users. It will easily be known and recognize.I think, Youtube will also be a great advantage since there are many active users.

Wise ideas. Facebook groups build some kind of a tribe where one has people who really appreciate the content and can even offer a market while they will also help to sell or increase awareness in their accounts by sharing.

That's actually a great idea. I have not promoted myself as a freelancer in any social networking sites. I would like to try this.

You're right Kakashi2020. Use the social media sites as platforms to promote your services and advertise the quality of your content. Social media sites especially Facebook have a great potential to generate traffic to your sites and to give you a large number of potential clients.

No one can go wrong using the social media as a promotional ground for products and services. So creste a Facebook page specifically for your art work, upload good quality work and ask your friends to like the page to follow all your update on the page.

I'd start from the artist specific websites where you can show your portfolio. Like say those dribble and other sites. Carbon is another website where you can show the portfolio. I have also noticed that freelance artists have started doing the showcase sites of their own tumblr and other social media. That also works out. I think for some of those people it can be pretty difficult to watch out in many ways if you are new. I'd say consult with some other artists and find out how they do it.

Utilizing social media as your platform for promoting your art and your work is a great way to go about it. Make use of Facebook's free of charge page and make yourself one. With promoting, the best option is to choose a page since everyone on Facebook will have access to it compared to a group where you'll have to add members. Make sure to link your Instagram, DevArt, reddit to your page. If you're going to start a Patreon make sure you link it as well. Another thing you can do is try and follow (and befriend) other artists who can help you out. Giving a freebie art (for example in celebration of you starting a Patreon) as a gift for your followers is also a good way to gain followers.

I agree. Social media has become one of the best promotional tools available. Using freelancing websites like upwork and Fiverr could take you a while, because people have to land on your page to see your drawing. On social media people will see your drawing immediately. You can also choose social media platforms like pinterest that are very visual and have a ready made audience for your art.

Maximize social media sites! Create facebook, twitter, instagram pages and showcase your portfolio. You can also try joining groups in Facebook where you can advertise your services. These sites already have a big audience to start with - you just have to make sure it gets to your target audience.

I agree with you. Nothing is more effective than promoting what you are working on on social media sites. Let the people who know you help you.

At this day and age, I'd actually consider promoting in social media as a necessity for someone who's just starting out. It's a very powerful tool and it can really boost your presence online.

As others have already stated, I think social media is the way to go. There are just so many ways to promote yourself via those channels and if something goes viral the publicity you can gain from it is just incredible.

A great thing would be to write a resume of yourself, including all your skills, talents, biography, job and location. After you've done that make sure to leave that resume hanging on all the freelancing websites. That way people will find you and contact you.

Yes, submit your resume on freelancing websites and you can also seek potential clients for jobs on those sites, if you do a good enough job then word of mouth and your high rating on that site is considered a good way of promoting yourself and your work.

That's a great idea. It is like the most convenient way of promoting yourself as a freelancer. I have to do this. Thanks

You can start a patreon but you have to get more audience first and I would recommend doing it on social media most especially Facebook/Instagram, they have the biggest audience and you should try running ads, even just for the first few months to jumpstart you page's popularity especially if you're starting from point zero. A website too can help boost your credibility. Join relevant groups not just on Facebook but any other sites that's relevant to freelancing.

You may opt to choose the service of Patreon in order to let potential client know that you are a freelancer. However, suggestions given by our co-subscribers here is also a must go. There's no harm in trying to used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the likes to spread the news. I suggest when you do that, link it to all your accounts and give your best content material to attract clients.

Patreon and the list of social media sites you post to is decent! I would recommend investing a bit into paid marketing, like setting up a campaign with Google Ad Words or Facebook Ads, and just see how it goes, HOW people react, do you have any suggestions and stuff like that... Do that with a smaller budget of 10-20$ per day for starters and then see where it goes...

I think we can also create a YouTube channel or video to promote our self as a freelance artist because I am sure that many people can recognize us all around the world in just a short period of time. YouTube is a very effective platform for us to be known since many people are hanging out everyday during their idle time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JBeleren
This is correct. There are many youtube channels that does videos that easily hooks people to subscribe, like a reaction channel then you also promote your work there, that way you get eyes on your product from people who normally would not be seeking it themselves.

I also notice that most people are going to YouTube to get famous. It must be a great strategy to get people to know you as a freelancer.

One thing you could do is to do some low-paying gigs (some even do it for free). Yes, probably painful at first, but it's an easy and one of the quickest ways to build up your portfolio and experience. You could also fit into many jobs that require a year or so of experience.

Another thing you can do is just make art and share it to the world through social media. If your art looks nice, people will give you more attention and more possible clients will notice you.

Good luck!

Do you use Pixiv? I think it's more oriented to the Japanese art style, though. As others have said, try Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... You could try forums too, or platforms like Discord or Slack. The more sites you promote yourself in the better. As for Patreon, I'd suggest having a well-established fanbase first.

Social media marketing (the ones you mentioned already) is great for starters because all of the social accounts can be created for free. WIX advertises that they are a good website for artists. This is a free D.I.Y. website builder application. Tumblr is good for artists. There are lots of artists and photographers. All of these you can create and start building your online presence. I've heard that patreon, society6, redbubble, zazzle, etsy are all good for artists. But I don't know the costs associated with creating accounts or pages at these sites. I'm not an artist. But my daughter is hoping to one. So I'll be following this thread in case I can give her some advice. Great discussion!

Yes tumblr, zazzle and etsy are good for the promotion of the artist skill. You can see that some of the content posted there you can easily get across peoples focus. Some of those time I think promoting the content in some sites also land you much regular jobs too. I think instagram is also one more place where people are promoting the portfolio.

I learned about bullet journal two years ago, and since then I enjoyed checking out the blogs and YouTube channels about bullet journaling. There are many artists who offered free and paid printables on their blogs or etsy shop. Since year 2019 is coming, some artists shares their calendars and printables for the new year as well. Perhaps you can also design some graphics for the new year or planners. Many artists share their work at Instagram as well, so I think if you follow some artists or bullet journalists there, then you'll get followers and you might get sales as well. I see that's how some bullet journalists get famous by sharing their art work. You can also try out some platforms to offer your services, such as Fiverr.

Getting ahead all the time is creating a platform where clients and customers can easily accessed one and see one work to be able to patronize well. Will advised you to put your best work out there on any of the platform you chose and be there to update information and answer to any queries that the customers may come up with.

You can tell your friends on social media about your career as freelancer artist. I would advise you to make a page on Facebook, for example. Pick up a good cover photo, upload it and see how your fans like it. Tell everyone about your career. Also, you should make good and quality posts on your page, do not forget that because it is very important. Good luck to you my friend!

@JBeleren Yes that would be a good idea as I see a lot of people having some reaction channel to gain popularity and to have more subscribers in an instant. I have never tried to have such reaction channel but I might give it a try in the future since it is a cool idea to promote our self as a freelancer.

Register on freelancing sites related to your niche and put up samples of your work. Also, use social media sites to advertise your work and you could use paid ads as well. Use as many avenues available to you as possible

This gives me the realization that I was not really promoting myself as a freelancer. There are so many forums that have boards for posting your expertise but I don’t remember posting there. Maybe it’s about time that I advertise myself that I am a trusted and certified content provider for forums and that I also accept commissioned writing of articles for contents. My target is social media because it is easier.

I agree that it is a good idea to use social media sites such as Facebook in promoting our self as a freelancer because we can easily drive some attention with it as more people are using it everyday for different reasons. I have never tried using my Facebook account to do that since I feel ashamed about it but I might tried it in the future someday.

Try being visible in social media platforms, create your own blogsite and start posting good content in it, content which is related to your service. Join other Facebook groups or create one yourself, it would come in handy. Boost your posts and use Facebook ads manager.
