Usually, that's my family priority too, specially food. We like to have a big special family dinner on Christmas eve and New Year's night, so we have to plan the menu and get all the snacks, drinks, strong dishes, and desserts. Gifts come in second place, because generally speaking we know what we are going to our relatives.

Agree. Sometimes people say they don't care, that it's just one night, and they really don't gather as family or friends. But in my case, that's completely the opposite, because gathering together during these holidays, is the way my parents taught me. I still don't have my own kids, or partner, but that's the tradition I will pass to them whenever I have them.

Honestly, I usually having a trouble for my budget during this kind of season when you sure will buy a lot of stuffs including foods and services. Yes, not only for gifts and other material things. What I do during Christmas season is to do a list of most important things to buy first before others. I like giving gifts and other stuffs to my family and friends, that's why I usually end up so much broke at the end of the year. But it's fine as long as I am happy and satisfied. All that matters is the money I earned went to people who are deserving and deserve to receive a little gift from me.

I agree. It is not bad to spend money for gifts and foods. I also think it that way, Christmas only happens once in a year. On that time, you can make your love ones how much you love them by giving them gifts. It doesn't matter how expensive it is, as long as you gave it wholeheartedly, they will still appreciate it.

One tip I can give is to write down your set budget on a piece of paper.
Below that you write down the names of the people you're going to give presents to.
If you already have an idea of what you wanna give them, you can write that down as well.
This is a good way of making sure you stick to your budget and also it will challenge you to not overspend.

Definitely a good tip. I really need some help about who I want to give presents, and what's exactly what I'm going to buy. So, that can be like a present list, I just keep myself to that list, and hope that it works properly, and helps me get just in my budget.

You should also list the cost of each present that way you can calculate how much money you have left for the other gifts.

With kids it's easy. I have to give over 20 children gifts because I have a lot of cousins and they have a lot of children, lol! What I do about their gifts is I buy like a care package of snacks for them; biscuits, chocolates, candy, and a small toy. I wrap them up, and that's what I give them. They're happy getting one since it's foods they rarely get to buy and enjoy.

Wow! that's a lot of cousins for sure hahaha. Well, that's pretty clever, you can make little bundles of candies, and that's a nice detail. Also, what kid doesn't like chocolates and candies right? I'm considering to do something similar with my cousins and god-sons, it's cheaper, and they will love it.

Last time I even packed them in a cute paper bag. Just put maybe 2 biscuits in there, 3 chocolates, maybe a pack of chips, and a small toy and you're all set. It's definitely cheaper and with kids getting the same thing there wouldn't be any arguments between them saying whose gift is better.

You got me on that one. Kids arguing about whose gift is better, is totally annoying. So far, I have cute plastic bags, some lip balms for the teens, crayola items for the boys, chocolate fun sizes, cookies, and I think I'm going to add some mac and cheese frozen edition hahaha, they really like it.

This is a tried and tested method. I've been doing this for years and it has never failed me. Oh and another tip, you can add a few more hundreds for a "just in case" the money isn't enough. Let's say your set budget is around 1,500, you can add at least 200 or 300 for emergency purpose. You'll only spend that if you really need to but if you don't need it then it goes back to your wallet.

Well, when something unexpected happens, and you aren't prepared, that's when the big issue begins. So, since a bad situation I had some time ago, I tend to have some savings, money that's untouchable under any circumstance, unless there's a real serious emergency. As a matter of fact, no. We share a common family budget, and we always maintain it together (me and my husband). We understand that money comes off as a result of a hard work, and even though I bring only passive income to the household, we still noticed that during holidays we spend the least amount of money. Totally get you. As I said before, our priority is the food because that's a need. I have forgotten the regular bills, those don't take holidays and keep coming straight to me. And, for sure I have to spend some money in presents at least for the kids, not my own but my God-daughter and God-son, they're good kids, and they deserve at least a little cute detail.

I'm in the bad habit of doing this. However this year I don't have a lot of money to spend on christmas and christmas presents so, I will have to budget to the maximum. Normally by this time of the year I have stopped working and I'm resting waiting to enjoy the holidays. However this year I plan to work until the 20th of December and have only one week off. In my family we prioritize more the foods and giving gifts that we can only afford we don't expect too much interms of gift, even we haven't recieved gifts for us it doesn't matter at all, it was not that big deal as ling as we are together then nothing can compare to that gift we recieved.

My parents can only earn what we need so we always have to make good use when it comes to budget. During this season, in our country, we have a lot of bonuses we can get from our work and because of that we tend to think that it is okay to spend and spend it anywhere. Being practical with spending is important, especially if you have a family to take care of. As a parent myself I would never want to spend frivolously and then have to worry about where our money was coming from to pay for food, bills, clothing and so forth. I still maintain decorum anytime I need to spend because if I'm not in control of it,I might not be able to have a balanced financial life where I have to control both my expenses and income. I used to do that some years ago. I joined a group of friends from college, we gathered money and toys, and we went to Children's hospital. We even took a guy dressed as Santa Claus, who was giving the toys to the kids. That's amazing, to see their faces and joy when they get a present. I would like to do it again, because even it's a small help, you're making a difference for those kids.

This is such an important part of the Christmas spirit. I also think of people have the time, volunteering on Christmas can be really special. Many homeless shelters and food kitchens have a desperate need for help over the festive season, and helping those less fortunate is a very humbling feeling.

Honestly, it feels really good. Every year, we used to make this gift sharing like a tradition. We also brought some soup for the parents, because they were there taking care of their kids, and some were unbelievable poor, and couldn't afford a decent meal. You could see how thankful they were, and also the joy of the kids, and you being a part of it, was so rewarding.

It is really hard for me to budget now since there is a strong need for me to buy some important things this Christmas and I have no choice but to use the money that I have saved from my freelancing activities to buy all the things that we really need for the Christmas preparation. You can also do what I have started doing. I start to buy things for christmas months before. I slowly come up with my list a few months after christmas and by the time august comes around I start the shopping process. It saves you time because you don't need to join the Christmas rush and also it is easier on the budget to not to buy needs for this season within a small timeframe.

I tend to go over my budget on gifts. I am a picky shopper, when I shop for myself I have this high standards for the things i buy and unfortunately I cannot turn that off when buying for other people. The only solution I thought of was to save much more for gifts so that II would be ready when this season comes.

It's so easy to overspend during Christmas! I have to buy a lot of gifts for a lot of people, I suddenly find a lot of things I can buy for myself, and almost every store has a big Christmas discount sale going on. However, as I don't want to blow a hole in my pocket, I try my hardest to stick to my planned budget! I usually try and set a dollar figure to spend for each person I need to shop for. Having a ballpark figure means I’m more likely to be able to stick to my budget. For my nieces and nephews for instance we try not to go over $45 per child otherwise it just gets ridiculous.

It was hard for me when it comes to budgeting your money when christmas season comes specially when you got your christmas bonus and 13th & 14th month pay. It was like being a day millionaire that I will buy everything I want but this is the only time but I buy those new items that I wish to have and it is also the time for spending for some gifts you want for your love ones. This is also the time to buy those grocery goods for christmas eve. This is the only time that I spend too much and I don't buy those things in my wishlist when it was just normal season and I also consider what is the most needs or it was just your wants. My expenses for Christmas and the New Year is almost zero. I belong to Hindu Community and I do not celebrate Christmas. I am from Nepal and Gregorian Calendar is not recognized here. We have our own calendar and the new year according to our calendar is somewhere in April.

Doing all work and no fun is like saving without spending and to me that's a recipe for burn-up. This Christmas Season it's very hard to stick to ones budget because it's the most festive time of the year. I usually spend more than my monthly earnings every December. So that means tapping my savings or buying on credit.

I think the festive season is the time when people are in a very celebratory and happy mood.Most of us do overspend during this time and we realise it after the festival season is over. I think that Budgeting your expenses before the Festival season and trying your best to follow that when you are shopping is the best practice to follow in order to limit the overspending.

I know right? I have exactly the same issue. Besides my godsons and goddaughters, I also have some little cousins, and that means a bunch of kids on Christmas. So, usually my expenses tend to go over the limit, and then I end up in crisis. This year, I took a great tip here, and I'm going to give them nice bags full of candies, chocolates, cookies, and adding a little extra detail, like lip balms, hair accessories, crayola items, or little puzzles. That way my budget will suffer less, and they all will have a Christmas detail.

I have to make a list by November so I wouldn’t miss anyone in my list of gifts. It is sad that I would remember a name and the occasion is already over that I forgot to give a gift. Anyway, the list would include the appropriate gift and the amount of budget. It is silly not to indicate the amount of budget because there is a tendency to overshoot and it will make me financially lame after the holidays.

Most definitely yes! I really tend to spend a lot of money when Christmas comes. I mean, I love spending money and buying things. But you got to buy presents for everyone and that may just be expensive. For example, your brother/sister maybe likes some expensive toy and you practically got to buy it because you know what he/she likes. Christmas season is a little bit of a burden for a home budget because everyone buys presents for everyone. But people are happy when you buy them some things and that is the only thing that matters. Christmas is a magical time, but every time it arrives my wallet starts to shake: gifts, family reunions, dinners, trips... So many things I want to spend money on, so very little money. The first thing I always do at this time is to get organized: I take out the calculator and set the maximum amount of money I can spend at Christmas. I make a rough estimate of what I can spend on everything - I divide my funds into gifts, dinners, and trips, for example - and it's much easier to get an idea of what I can afford.

Christmas season is a month of festivity and we could not miss on some important event being celebrated during this time. While it pave ways for us to enjoy and be merry together with our love ones. It is undeniably true that this is one of the most expensive month where we need to spend a lot of purchases for groceries, gifts and the likes. Budgeting well not come easy for those who are not used to it and we might just have to find our pocket completely raided without us knowing it right away until we do. This Christmas I intend to budget in order to avoid overspending as I did the last time.

I would save up for a budget to use on christmas to buy food and gifts for everyone. And add a quarter of my one month salary to the budget. I will make sure I have enough and not spend beyond my budget. Christmas season is a season for giving and recieving but you have to set limitations and have a budget set to your lifestyle. We cant just spend everything for christmas and have nothing the following year. Be smart and wise in spending.

You will find yourself overspending if you do not plan first before going on a mall or stall. You will also be always attracted and tempted to buy stuffs you don't need but gets your attention because of it's Christmas theme design or use. If you have a list and fixed budget, you can avoid this but it is better if you could have at least one item that you really like that is not included on your budget list just to satisfy your craving.

I think it's hard to budget money this festive festival because it's so many delicious foods that can be sold in some store which give me chills and crave in every food that I see I'm a food lover person and all I want for this festival is food lol maybe I should budget sometimes hahahahaha.
