Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

Everyone wants to be rich but not many people think their own websites design is actually the thing holding them back from making money.  It's true, you design can actually be turning people away and it doesn't matter how good the services or products are.  If your design is outdated, slow, not optimized, and basically just looks bad then you will not see the number of sales coming in that you had hoped for.

If you designed your website from scratch, while learning how to build websites, you likely need a good overhaul due to using outdated techniques.  Just like everything else in the world, web design evolves as time goes on, so if it took you a couple years to finish your design then you likely need to start over Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

In this discussion, I'll be going over a few things you need to think about if your design might be hurting your sales, such as:

Your design looks like a splash page
A lot of people like putting up these one-page websites to catch sales and emails, but those are becoming outdated and scammy looking.  If you have one page with all of your products or services, a TOS page, a privacy page, and a contact us page then you're likely going to lose some sales.  This is because you have the bare minimum to be considered a website.  Sure, you have a design and a domain, but that doesn't mean you're going to make money lol Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

Add a blog, some subpages, and anything else you can think of in order to convince people you're legitimate.  The more content you have on your website, the better it is for your sales, and you will even see some traffic coming in from the search engines because you now rank for some long-tailed keywords Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

Your website looks like it was made in 1997
One of the biggest turn-offs when landing on a website is seeing an outdated template that was made in the beginning years of the internet.  People always used these templates because that's just how websites were made back then, but that doesn't mean you need to use them now.  Sure, you'll get a few sales here and there by using these templates and having some catchy sales copy, but you could be making a boatload more cash if you just had a modern design that people can trust.

Another reason you shouldn't use old templates is that they make your website look like it's been abandoned.  You're not staying up to date with design trends, and that means your website is essentially collecting cobwebs, and now people won't purchase from you because they aren't sure if the website has anyone running it.

You're using a basic template and it doesn't look high quality
Just like the above point, you could be using a template that was designed in a few hours and it doesn't look high quality.  It could have been made yesterday by a person who wanted to get into web design, and it's likely enticing because it's free to use, but that doesn't mean you should be using it.  Spend a few bucks and get a WordPress theme from ThemeForest if you want to look amazing online.  You can always customize these themes to do anything you want since you have all the code at your disposal.  You can even add dozens of different plugins to your website and make it more unique than anyone else who has purchased it.

A lot of people ask me "Doesn't Google want to see a unique website design in order to boost my rankings?" and the answer to that is "Yes and No".  They want you to have a good design that loads fast, but they don't really care if you're using a theme that 1,000 other people are as well.  As long as you're adding your own content and images you'll be just fine in the eyes of Google Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

You have your newsletter popup showing too often
One of the most annoying things you can come across online is a pop-up newsletter that doesn't know when to stop.  You could close it and it will pop back up in 20 seconds as you're reading an article.  By having a newsletter pop-up like this, you're just annoying your visitors and they will leave after a certain point, and this point tends to be much earlier than they decide to make a purchase!

Having a newsletter popup is great, but only use it once in order to pull attention to it, don't use it dozens of times when the person is on your website.  People will see it and sign up if they want, but if they don't sign up then they shouldn't be seeing it 20 more times during their visit.  You're essentially pushing them off of your website because you really need them to sign up.

In conclusion
Minimal is actually good in today's world because people want to read what they came to your website for, they don't want to search for it, so if you can design your website in a way that doesn't draw their attention elsewhere then you should be golden.  Another thing to think about is your template, if you're using one, it should not be old and free.  These tend to be pretty much garbage and should be thrown away.  Spend a few bucks on a nice design or theme and you will be just fine in the eyes of Google and the other search engines as well as any visitor that lands on your pages Why the design of your website could actually hurt your sales

I liked the information you gathered here. I think the design of your web is one big factor to attract people to visit your website. It is like a photo in your profile. The better it looks the merrier your clients.

Your article is well-researched and informed. I like that. All the points stated are valid, but your conclusion has killed it all. I always advise those hiring web-developers to have a sample of what they want, otherwise, you might have golden content but the appearance of your website chases visitors and followers away.

The more user-friendly your website is the more visitors, followers, and conversions.

Considering the fact that your responsive website is optimized for search engines like google, there may be a larger chance that your site might be on better rankings on search engine outcomes. Greater visitors can be interested to view your web page. Particularly when your website online have beyond customers evaluate phase, site visitors of your web page could then see how you have got worked with your clients and how reliable your business enterprise is. Therefore, greater visitors for your website will result in growing your sales and boost of your business.

When there are visitors to the website due to the marketing work that you do I guess there will be the greater chance of getting business from them especially for first time visitors. But your site should be clear on what your business is all about and the approach should be direct. I have seen some e-commerce sites where the contents looked like they were written by literary writers that it was so hard to comprehend what the business is all about. That kind of content is a turn off to first time visitors.

Your website represents your company and the products/services you are offering. When people arrived at your website it is very important to give them the best user experience. That's why your website's design must be good to attract your visitors to keep on looking at your content. And of course your content must capture immediately your visitors attention by providing them what they are looking for on the internet.

Some of the website owners fail to understand that there is no other front shop that they have other than the website and ensuring that it comes on a nice design is something that is great and nice. It is going to attract clients and show how serious that you are in giving the best to them.

Everything you wrote is true. This article is definitely one of the most informative and detailed articles here in the community. True enough, the design of a website will truly play a big role in its success. I myself as a frequent visitor of different websites tend to always judge first the visuals/design of the website before anything else because it's the first thing that I can see whenever I open a website. That's why I do believe that to be able to be successful website owner, one must definitely have good web design skills or if not, he/she should hire freelancers with excellent web designing skills.

Having a poor website design is a turn off to most of the people that may be thinking of doing business with the owner especially when it is an e-commerce website. I believe that as long as I am concerned, spending money to upgrade the website design is something that is wise to do.

Appearance is very important in any online business platforms especially when it's shopping e-commerce sites.

The eyes would first look and be satisfied with what it's seen before the prospective buyer makes his or her decision on whether to buy or not.

Design means a lot to the shopping website. One bad design element and shopper can avoid buying from that website. You can see that some of the time such approach is what hurts the sale the most. So one needs to be careful on handling such type of design changes. I'd recommend learning about design and how to get most out of such. Never blindly design bland sites.

Some site owners make the grave mistakes of jumbling a lot of things up on their site which makes its navigation to be very hard.

Personally, when I find it very difficult to navigate through a site, I'm definitely going to be quiting the site immediately.

Yes the design is what makes or breaks the experience of the customer. I would say that on that note it can be really good to work with the site with simple design and better workflow. I think website that knows how to get sales system proper they can tell you how to set it up properly. It can get you on much better process as well.

I agree with you. In case your website is properly designed and nicely organized, your clients will be more likely to discover what they're searching out faster, that allows you to lessen the chance that they drop off the site. Moreover, the greater common the placement of certain objects, the much more likely your clients will have a excellent user experience.

Yes as long as the funnel has the proper flow for the payment. I think there should be no issues with the process in which you may find it would affect the sales. But keeping that aside, I think design of the website definitely matters.

I totally agree with those. Those are really some of the reasons I might turn away from a website, unless I already knew there are good contents on the website which I really want to read. I think another feature that might also turn the visitors away is to play the background music automatically without any real meaning. I remember this kind of web design was quite popular in 90s or early 2000, those music are for us to relax I suppose, but now I actually find them quite annoying, especially if I find it on a shopping website. I prefer simple and clean, responsive and fast navigation design.

That is very true, some websites are very outdated and boring in there design and the overall experience. The funniest part is that they never change there design periodically. But apart from the design, the customers visit the websites to search for the answers to there problems or in the search of the right product or services. The site navigation should be very convenient for the customers. I guess keeping it simple and easy are the basic expectations that must be fulfilled by every website who wants to remain relevant

Using poor or low standards design on your site will affect the overall quality of your site. It will cut down the organic traffic such site makes because visitors would find it very difficult to stay longer in a badly designed site. No traffic means no money.

Yes, I agree with you, because if you want to boost your money from a website you should invest a lot of money first to make your website more attracted to others.

The only thing I hear most people saying nowadays is to make sure your website design is mobile-friendly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
True. A website that is mobile-friendly as well as user-friendly and responsive is more preferable these days for the users. Not all people are techy and know how to navigate their mobile phones well so it is advisable to make the website in that way for the convenience of the majority.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I suppose it is because a lot of people use mobile devices to access the net. These mobile users may find navigation to be rather difficult on sites that aren't mobile friendly. Either they wouldn't hang around for long or they won't ever visit your site again should they see it in the SERPs. Would explain why everyone must make sure their site is mobile friendly. And it is also used as a ranking factor by search engines.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes. I recall a few years back that Google even offered a free tool so that you could test your website to see if it was mobile-friendly and how fast it loaded. I'm sure that tool is still available.

Yes that is because the mobile based conversions are lot easier and quicker. In such context I'd say that AMP is on the top lately. I'd choose that if you don't have the mobile friendly design. We just have to learn about those things.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, I agree. I try to keep up and that word "AMP" showed up when I was checking up on my websites and I'm like: "Great! Another new thing I have to learn."

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). (https://www.ampproject.org/learn/overview/)

These days just another plugin installation for AMP. It seems like many sites are easier to port with plugin. But in some cases having the responsive theme alone is good site. I have found that to be true.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

cmoneyspinner
I try to use a responsive theme. It works for you not against you.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Agree. In case of something like Genesis and Elementor they have pretty good themes. And they can easily port the content to responsive way. And not much work needed on our part. On that note I'd say it's better to use the website with responsive them.

Great points. I couldn't agree more to this. The design of your website could possibly hurt your sales just like having unskilled and unpleasant employees. Websites should be treated as the frontline of companies. Thus, its design should be pleasing and user-friendly.

Because if the design of your website is not that attractive, it won't attract a lot of customers to look at your website, no clients or customers meaning no sales.

A lot of people do not understand that, yes a website or page design could impact your sales. I have seen many websites from freelancers and their website is so poor. It is almost as if they did not take any time to work on it and just threw something together really quick to try and get sales. Then these same people wonder why they are not getting the sales they want.

A lot of people can detect bad website design even if they are not internet-savvy. This is due to other websites having great design. They are used to high-quality original designs. So if your website design looks as if you spent 5 minutes on it then your potential to receive sales will be very low.

There are many free HTML website designs to help if you do not know HTML or CSS. I would strongly suggest that each and everyone learns at least one programming language starting with HTML and CSS.

Another thing, an unresponsive website can hinder sales like hell. Imagine in a world where there are more phones than toothbrushes, and imagine building your website in a manner that these phone users, which makes up a huge chunk of internet users, are unable to conveniently access your content. I need no soothsayer to let you know how much sale you will lose as a result of this.

The newsletter pop ups. They are bad for business.

They are really annoying and I'm sure lots of people find them very annoying too. Attempting to force someone to subscribe to a newsletter will simply drive that person away. I've noticed that some blogs have this newsletter option floating all over the place making it nigh impossible to read anything unless you subscribe. Certainly isn't the best way to get more subscribers. If you make it hard for someone to read the one thing that made them visit your site, why would they stick around?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
Yes, newsletter popups really are annoying as hell. I come across those far too frequently while browsing the internet. I would be reading an article and then BAM! a newsletter popup. Often I just close out of the popup and then get annoyed. Sometimes I will not even return to the website that had that popup. I find that to be somewhat of a "shady" practice. Why does the website need my email so much? Why do they keep wanting me to subscribe to their newsletters? It all comes down to money in this instance. Sometimes this is a way for them to collect emails then sell them. Even if a website claims that they do not sell an email, I bet some of them do anyway. I would not like my email to be sold, so I normally only opt-in to newsletters from trusted sites that hopefully will not sell it's user's information.

Most people are visual learners, they learn, act, respond to whatever they see. If something is not that enticing, even me as an ordinary person would really not want to try to visit the site again. People enjoy things or places that are pleasant in the feeling, especially in the eyes. So, putting an effort in creating an appropriate and visually attractive design in your site will not hurt you, it will help you in many ways.

If the guest or customer sees your website has a poor design and doesn't have a unique content, they will think twice, because they are not amazed by the design of the website.

I feel like you are heaven sent just because you touched on that issue about the pop ups being too much. I hate the sites that keep bringing pop ups that I have to click and even sometimes you click and another one appears. It can be a marketing tactic but annoying when it is too vigorous.

I believe that the design of a certain website could affect our earnings because people are being attracted to visit a site which has a good appearance and features as well that is why we should give much importance in it if possible so that we can gain more visitors that would help us to earn more.

An old of the website is not exactly a turn off because some people prefer the old designs that are simple. What really turns me off when it comes to website design is a cluttered homepage that you have difficulty in finding the web page that you are looking for. Some designs would make you click 2 or 3 times before you are brought to the particular web page and that is a waste of time. Why not be clear with the home page menu so that you can click directly the desired web page.

A good and quality design is highly important for each and every website. If you can't design well then of course you will lose some visitors. So try to make your website more attractive with unique and eye-catching design.
