Running a business is tough so you need to take personal time to boost profits

When you start running a business, whether it's online or offline, you will need to always take some personal time if you really want to boost your profits. You can't work 365 days a year and think you're going to be as productive as you possibly can, it doesn't work like that, so you'll need to work in some personal time each month.

You can work 16 hour days, but if you work too much you'll get burnt out, and that means you just won't want to do your job anymore no matter how much money you're making. There's no such thing as someone working 12+ hours a day, 5 days a week, and is completely stress-free. You will always need to take a couple days off in a row, take a long weekend, or take a vacation in order to regroup or re-energize yourself for better work productivity in the long run.

You can't work 60 hours a week and be stress-free
I work full time online and don't really track how many hours each week I've been doing stuff to push my company towards success, but I know internally when I'm starting to hit my limit because I start getting stressed out really easily. I will try to balance my work and family life, but if I'm putting in extra hours each day, it will always stress me out because I always have family obligations that need to be attended to. If I can't attend to them, I start getting stressed, but I do know I'm working longer for a reason.

Instead of working 12 hour days, 5 days a week, try working for 6 days a week and doing 10 hours each time. You will be amazed at how much stress is lifted with just those 2 extra hours each day.

You need personal time to regroup and re-energize
Think of yourself as a battery that gets depleted over time and needs to be recharged, because that's essentially what you are, and you need time away from work to power your cells.

If you're working a lot each week, take a long weekend to get away with your family, or just go somewhere on your own if you don't have a spouse or children. You just need to regroup and re-energize, so do something you want to do, and you'll see your productivity will be doubled at work when you do go back Running a business is tough so you need to take personal time to boost profits

Overworking will burn you out quickly
Working 16 hour days isn't something people want to do, it's something they have to do if they want to be successful, and that's why we do it all the time. The downside of this is if we're not successful quick enough, we'll get burnt out, and that essentially means we don't want to do what we're doing anymore and want to quit.

You never want to hit this point because you'll see that nothing is working and you want to stop, but you never know how much further away success is, and that's why you need to keep pushing. It sounds sort of backward, but you need to take personal time and stop working if you want to make your work more successful Running a business is tough so you need to take personal time to boost profits

You need a team in place to take over
Not having the right people in place for when you take some "Me Time" will just increase stress levels and you will always think of what needs to be done when you do start working again. Instead, make sure you have a team of people to pick up your slack while you're gone and you won't be stressed when you're out of the office or AFK (away from keyboard).

Just go on a vacation already!
Not many people plan vacations anymore, and that's usually due to work habits, but it needs to stop right here. You should just go on a vacation if you've been working long hours and busting your butt!

In conclusion
You'd be surprised how much more successful you'll be after you come back from a 4 to 7 day vacation Running a business is tough so you need to take personal time to boost profits You need personal time to regroup and re-energize, so take some time for yourself and go to the lake or to an event and have some fun. Try not thinking about work when you're on vacation or taking a weekend off, you need time to yourself in order to be more successful later. You don't want to burn out do you? I didn't think so! Go on a vacation already! Running a business is tough so you need to take personal time to boost profits

The reality is that over working can make someone feel down and burn out easily. One thing that I have come to understand about taking rest while we are at work is that it is going to help in making us fit and strong again to deliver the best of us instead of working while we are tired to do so.

Yeah, exhaustion and stress will effect your decision making and even your motor skills. Bringing food to the table is easy if you bring food for the mind and body first.

As long as I am concerned, taking the needed rest once in a while is one of the ways that I use to ensure that I do a better job. I have seen people that always try to work even when they are truly tired and I wonder the rest it is like that.

Too much of everything is bad even when it's money that you are going after. The human body is not a robot, so rest is very important in one's life even if you are looking to make money online from your online business. When the stress of your business is actually too much, please it's important to rest and take some time off.

This is true. We only have one body, and we are the sole responsible for it. So if you tried to work a lot that your body can't take it anymore it will have a bad effect both on your body and business. Your goal for working so hard is to make a living right? But how can we live of our body cannot take the stress and even worse our body will give up.

Definitely! And as they say, health is wealth. We have to take care of our self because our body is also our best asset. What is the essence of earning a lot of money if you will just use it for dialysis or other treatments because you got ill from working so hard. Learn to balance things and keep in mind that the best things in life are priceless.

It is good to say that we are not robots because that will make us realize that we are physical in nature and that we get tired not only physically but also mentally. The stress cannot be measured but too much of it can make us sick. Worse, a stroke can result from excessive stress as evidenced by some stroke patients. I agree that running a business is tough and it is more on the emotional and mental aspects than the physical.

Since I decided to start working online my 9 to 5 workdays went on the shelf. I can be on my laptop for 16 to 18 hours easily. But I usually take Sundays OFF and on Saturdays I try not to work the entire day away and knock off early. It's just me, myself and I. If I burn myself out, nobody's going to step in and fill my shoes. I have never been a workaholic and for those who are, my advice is take a chill pill.

It's a great advice, a whole day off would probably give you enough energy to keep you up to the coming days. Eight hours of working time a day is i think enough just to make sure you'll have enough time to rest within the day. Going for eight or more hours of work will definitely affect your health at the long run.

That's definitely one of the benefits of working for yourself, away from the 9 to 5. If you work really long hours one day, the flexibility is generally there to have a quieter few days to make up for it. I love being able to work for myself and structure my week to better fit the needs of myself and my family.

Such a nice advice. Everyone needs some time to rest and have a "me time". It is not bad to have a rest and do nothing, our body and mind needs it. It needs to be refreshed so we can have energy for the following days of work, it needed to be recharged.

So glad that the concept of balance and burnout are being discussed! I’ve worked in both the corporate world and for myself, and found exactly that - when I don’t make time for myself I’m not productive at all, and just end up feeling like a hamster on a wheel.

Remember that issue of mental block that comes from working too much. The only way of getting that sorted out is to take some time off and get some rest, relax and enjoy yourself. Calm down your brain activity and sleep well. Take Care of yourself and your family and get back again to your business.

I find that even something as simple as getting out for a walk in between my work day can help refresh my brain and shake that feeling of being short on time.

I've experienced it too. When I was still working, there was a time when my schedule was so toxic, deadlines are filing up so I needed to work fore than 8 hours a day. I came at the office around 7am and I go out around 7pm or later. Few days later, I feel so exhausted and my mind is not working well. But I can't afford to have a day off. I don't wanna do it anymore.

You need personal time to regroup and re-energize, i had my experience of being so stressed and so exhausted on my business. It really helps to cool down a little bit. One thing i do is take power naps just to make sure i have enough stamina to last the day. Working with your business takes a lot of your time and energy, if you forget your well being your business is also affected.

My online business is one man show. I write blogs, promote and advertise my website, I do social media campaigns, I manage sales and commissions, I even design and program my website. One of the reasons why I am doing everything by myself is due to lack of funds. Since I am doing everything, I am not excelling on every department, that's why my business is not doing good. One man show does not work. You need experts to work on your business.

Yeah specially in the kind of business you have. With all the activities you have, i think your having problem with your time management. I suggest you try prioritizing a few services which you are most skilled and efficient with. I know profit is very important, but if you try multiple chores with the same man power it still ends up with the same profit with less efficiency. Just my opinion...

It's incredibly difficult when you're trying to juggle everything yourself, but I've been in that boat before too. Hopefully sometime soon you might be in a position to outsource some of your work and alleviate some of the stress.

I have blogs, user-generated content site, affiliate store and ecommerce sites. I not only produce contents for my sites, but also do seo and digital marketing. Since I am doing everything by myself, my promotional and marketing campaigns are not giving the desired results. However, at this moment, I am not in a position to hire a marketer or SEO expert to ease my work. Juggling between various tasks will never make you successful.

Yeah, a lot of people just work and work and work without thinking for their own health and happiness, when they eventually lose so much more time and money due to illness, unhappiness, stress, or have problems with their own family for not spending much time with them, etc. You need to have a good life-work balance not only for the sake of yourself but also for the business, because the business will be so much more profitable if the person behind it is at his best every day.

Nothing good comes easy, especially if you are looking at successful making your business boom well and earn a good deal of money from your business. But take note that stress is guaranteed and too much of it is not going to do you good. So, try and take some time off and come back better.

I completely agree with you on that to be effective, energized and motivated in any kind of work one should take the needed rest. A person is not a machine, the body needs to rest and heal and energize itself more so after a very stressful project. One cannot work too long without rest or else the body would breakdown and would get sick. We all have a stress threshold that we cannot cross so it's best to have some downtime to regroup our faculties and heal our mind and bodies.

I believe that with the right strategy one can be able to maximize their day to effectiveness. It still does not substitute relaxation but it can assist to prevent burnouts from excessive work. Starting the day on a high note and exercising early on are some useful tactics. Also dividing tasks according to their order of importance and handling only the most important ones can be beneficial. That way, one will only tackle that which is of optimal priority and if time runs out then they would have achieved their chief goals.

It helps to have a daily schedule or planner to set your tasks for the day and also budget your time for rest and relaxation. It also helps when you actually see that you are accomplishing stuff on your to-do list.

I agree plus when you have your day week planned ahead you will handle so much. You have it set in your mind that you need to accomplish the tasks hence you will have an easy time going around them.

You also don't forget about anything you need to do, I usually sort my schedule in the immediate tasks I need to finish before the day or the other tasks that I can start if I still have the time but don't need to rush it.

Yeeah I agree. From the time you wake up its like your mind is programmed to accomplish the important tasks. You will have an easy time going about them. Schedules will always be the best way to approach you day.

I suffered a couple of burnouts in the past and it wasn't pretty. That's why nowadays relaxation and a stress free environment when resting is a must. We only have one life to live, let's all live it happily right? No sense of working all 7 days a week if at the end you'll get sick, moderation is always the key.

Burnouts are definitely the worst-case scenario and you don't want to get there, especially when you don't even notice that you're already burned out of what you're doing. I experienced this too but with my post-graduate studies, I ended up having to take a leave for 1 year and I'm just slowly picking up the pieces.

I can't stress how much I agree with this. Taking time out is the most important thing to grow our business. Launching your business is easy it's quite another thing altogether to grow it. For this you need strategy. How do you get strategy? You need motivation, inspiration and to think. This can only happen when you are happy and rested. That's why most founders live the running of the business to their teams and concentrate on coming up with new ideas.

To be productive a person must always maintain his health and this can be done by having good nutrition and health. A person cannot work effectively under stress for long periods of time. There would eventually be a breaking point or burnout and when this happens all motivation would be lost along with it productivity would stop. So it's always imperative to balance work and rest.

I'm actually curious how often people plan vacations - I try to aim for a couple each year, just so I have a break in sight and something to look forward to. How about the rest of you?

I can attest to this as I have my own business. Working overtime all the time is counterproductive to what you want to achieve. It makes you stressful and irritable. You can't think properly if you just work and work. Your brain will overload. In my experience, working too much causes me to lose my motivation. It makes me tired easier. But when I have time for myself, my goals are clearer and I work joyfully.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
It reminds me of the saying "work smarter, not harder". Sometimes just being able to take some breaks can really revitalize you, and it changes your entire outlook and overall work performance. Being at the office all the time doesn't make someone a good employee - in fact, I think it can be a telltale sign of inefficiency!

I had the experience of having a business twice already and I’d say that it’s really tough. Maybe I didn’t have enough time for my business since I had a full time job to attend to. But I had seen the rigors of handling the business and you have to focus all the time, day and night, that you seem to have no more time for yourself. Anyway, my suggestion is not to open up a business if you cannot give it 100% of your time and attention.

It's really hard to focus on your business when you also have your own full-time job. Most people just quit their jobs to focus on their business entirely, and while it's more successful in terms of supporting the business, it could be really disastrous when the business doesn't work out.

Most people today are workaholics. Work and time with ourselves should be balance. We should spend 8 hours on our work and spend the rest for our family, ourselves, friends etc. Work are for eternity but time for us is not. We should not invest our time in earning money but invest it to something that can make us happy and the people around us.

That's right. You need to take some rest sometime. You'll figure out some new ideas and what's better to run the business. You should also spare time with yourself, not just working everyday. You need to relax and it will help your mind and body. I tied over working and it's really exhausting. It will just hinder yourself from being productive. It may compromise the quality of your work.

Gainful business is extremely hard when you are simply beginning. As a matter of first importance, you need to build up your item to you target costumers. You either need to recognize what they need or make them need what you are offering. In any case, when you set up your business and as of now have patronizer, everything will be simpler.

Well, taking some time off from your work is very essential, if you want to be successful in the long run. When you work long hours everyday without taking offs , you are bound to feel stressed and exhausted eventually. It will definitely also have an effect on the quality of your work. Afterall there is always a limit to the amount of work that one can physically do without compromising on the quality of the work. Once you take a break or a vaction for a few days, you will definitely feel more energized and recharged when you resume your work.
