Top 10 rules to an effective landing page

When you're designing an effective landing page, there are some very important things you need to focus on.  Many people think they just need a few links to a products page, but there are many more things that factor in when you are building a great page.  You can't do everything in a short amount of time, it takes patience, so be sure to go over everything twice or three times just to make sure you have it right.  You can even ask someone to come in and evaluate your pages so you have an unbiased review from someone that will tell you the truth.

Below I'll be going over the top 10 rules to an effective landing page, and they are:

Your page needs to focus on one thing
You need to figure out what your main business point is and stick with it.  You can't talk about all of your services or products because it could get overwhelming and possibly confuse if there's too much to read.  Stick to one or two of your main selling points and get detailed about it.

The most important info goes above the fold
Above the fold means you need to have all of the quality selling points in front of the visitor before they even scroll down the page.  This is your Money Section and will likely boost your sales if set up just right.

Your headlines need to attract attention
I'm not saying you need to set it up to be click-bait, but you need to keep your headlines attractive so people keep reading and stay on the page longer.  If you have bland headlines it will guarantee that people will leave your pages and not go to a second or third article.  Keeping people on your website is what you're trying to do, so keep your headlines attractive.

Your specific audience needs to get special benefits
If you know exactly what your audience wants, give it to them in the form of a benefit like a discount.  You can even give away specific things that they might want, which will increase your page views as well as sales.

Talk about specific features
Just like the very first point, get specific about your one or two features and you will have a much better landing page.  If you're just glossing over and typing up a few sentences about your services, you're not creating a great experience for the user and your sales will likely drop.

Provide a clear call to action
If your links are disguised within the content or don't stand out in the sidebar and footer, you won't see an increase in sales or profits.  Make sure your call to actions stand out from the page and you will see people clicking on them more often, boosting your sales.

Use unique and high quality images
Using bland images won't get you much in the field of quality landing pages.  If you have to, pay for a subscription to a stock image platform and select some specific images that fit your design and industry.  After you have the right images for your landing page, customize them slightly so they stand out a bit more.

Use formatting to break the page apart
When I run into a wall of text I tend to not read it.  Now, if that wall of text was broken up into smaller paragraphs and had headlines for a few of them, I would read down the page more often and that means formatting works.  It's actually proven that formatting your content works better than a wall of text, so do it and watch your time on page increase Top 10 rules to an effective landing page

Use social proof on your pages
When you're trying to get people to sign up for something, use social proof to increase your success rates.  When you show that X,XXX,XXX people already love what you're doing, tell other visitors about that and they will more than likely sign up because others will do the same.

Have an easy to opt-in form
When you're building a great landing page, you will always need an opt-in form to boost your sign-ups.  Email marketing is still a huge way to increase profits, so start collecting those emails and watch the return visitors start buying more and more.

In conclusion
If you can follow all of the tips above, you will more than likely have a great landing page and boost your sales.  It's a long journey, and it might take you a few tries or days, but you can make the best landing page if you just go through the above list step by step and make sure it's done to perfection.  Remember, most landing pages only need to be done once and can sit there for a long time bringing in leads.

I have a recipe blog but never get any traffic. Do I have to do short intro before I introduce the recipe? I use my own photos.

There could be many reasons you're not getting any traffic. You could not be getting traffic because of your content, your optimization, or the dreaded penalty could have found your domain.

You likely don't have a penalty, so focus on optimizing your content and be sure that content is 2,000 words long or more. You never really see an article ranking on the first page and it only has 300 words, and that's because a 2,000-word article is better for people to read and Google will rank them higher than you if they have more content.

Now, you must have quality content in order to have a better chance at ranking on top of the search engines, you won't just rank #1 if you have a longer article than your competitors. If you aren't familiar with the niche, or you're targeting a different language than you're used to, I would highly recommend hiring a content writer to get the job done for you so it all works out well in the end for you.

As for your optimization, you need to focus on adding the right amount of keywords to your content as well as your titles and descriptions. If you're putting them in there too often, you'll get hit with a keyword stuffing penalty, and that can only be lifted if you fix all of your content and get re-indexed, which isn't the easiest thing to do.

Once you get your website in order, you'll need to focus on 3rd party websites and build niche related backlinks aimed at your homepage, subpages, and even your blog. If you can do that, and keep the links for a long time, you'll start to notice some traffic trickling in.

There's not a quick shot to the top type of marketing you can do unless you're using Adwords and paying for everyone that clicks on your ads, but that could take a lot of funds to be competitive and this is why people usually focus on SEO to boost their rankings.

You'll also want to get active on your main social media profiles. You won't get a boost in the search engines because of what you're posting on the social media platforms, but you could acquire some backlinks from people reading your content and sharing your posts with other people on forums or blogs, which will boost your rankings and hopefully send in some traffic.

If you can do all of that, without going insane, you'll hit the top for some long-tailed keywords and begin to get some traffic coming in. If you can do it even longer, you'll hit #1 for some competitive keywords and have a great deal of traffic coming in Top 10 rules to an effective landing page

Hopefully that helps out Top 10 rules to an effective landing page

Videos are a great way of attracting traffic to your blog. Try to create a youtube channel and link your blog to each video that you are going to upload. Promote your blog on different social media platforms.

Advertise it or share your recipes, site and link in various social medias like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or you may opt to create a YouTube channel and post videos of your recipes and dishes there. This is the quickest way of getting a lot of quality, legitimate traffic.

I would add that speed of opening landing page is very important, and that page shouldn't contain to much contents, short, right to the point, with nice optimized but high quality image(s) or short video explainer. Also keep in mind that page is optimized for mobile browsers!!!! Most of people nowadays visiting it from mobile applications and browsers.

This reminds me of a link that I clicked about a digital camera that maybe the photos are very high in resolution that it almost took eternity before the whole page was displayed. If it was not only very important I would have exited even before seeing the first part of the content. I hate landing pages that are very slow in displaying and it’s actually for any web page for that matter.

Focusing on one thing is important - it's the old "less is more" strategy! I know that personally when I visit a website, if there's too much going on and it's hard to navigate, then often I'll simply close out of the page and look elsewhere. Sounds rather savage I guess, but at the end of the day simplicity when it comes to locating information is huge.

I tend to agree in focusing on a specific product and service, and don't try to market or advertise a lot of products and or services all at the same time. Because this would cause confusion among the target market, it's best to concentrate only on 1 product first.

Your business need to have a good sense of direction because it's what gives it a unique brand face. Focus on one thing and push it up the ladder and see people take interest in it. When you lack focus in what you do, there is always the possibility of others losing focus on your business. Using an attractive headline that is eye catchy is very important because it's what would drive people to the page.

I think lot of landing pages have clutter on the page. And they are not to the point with the offer. And that's something needs to be changed. Lot of people need to understand that it's not always possible to make the landing page convert. And people have to spend their time and money onto things that properly convert.

I have never used a landing page, however, I might soon use a landing page for one of my websites. I am revamping my site. I am changing is from affiliate marketing blog to dropshipping store. I will remember the points you have mentioned here. The most important one I think is your first point. I think you should never give too much on the first page. You should highlight the point that is your unique selling proposition.

The most important info should be on the first page so that it would be readily visible to visitors. Another thing would be to highlight your most saleable product or service on the first visible page.

I would also add, in terms of content, especially text-based content, the following:

  • use simple language everyone understands
  • write like you speak, in other words, tell, don't explain
  • your customers need to connect with real-life examples, give them, link them to some case studies or write in such a matter
  • befoure you start rambling about features, tell them the benefits, they need to connect, they won't be impressed by the features if they don't connect with the benefits (it need to solve their needs)
  • don't expect people to read, most people hate reading, most of them will scan, write for people that scan

It's good that you mentioned the last two. These are the things that differentiate content reading from other articles. People need to know if they can get what they need no matter how impressive the features are. The more I learn about all these helpful tips, the more I understand how unprepared I am and there's a lot I need to learn.

Basically you need an optimized, quick loading page with a great FAQ's page and even greater content. For me that sums up a good and effective landing page.

I agree that you cannot just talk about all your products because it is like scattering the attention of the reader. Focusing on the business or maybe capitalizing on the most salable product will be an advantage in terms of notice to reader. At least the reader will have the convenience of reading what the product is all about. And if he likes it then he would probably click on another page for more products.

Yeah, the people always want to know what you are selling as this is one of the reasons that they are on the website. So, taking out to compose a nice one is always good.

I agree. The design should be simple but still catchy. It should contain some pictures or videos since some people don't like full of words in the content. Social media will surely help in promoting your website as well. If you do any twitch, Facebook live or Youtube, you can market your website. You can also tell your friends about it. For me. social media is so far my top 1 rank if you want to market your website since almost people in the world are using it.

Well, keeping your focus on a single topic that is relevant to your readers is one of the most important aspects that need to be kept in mind. I think people will always like a focused discussion when they are looking for specific answers on the relevant subject. Keeping it focused and easy to read will always be necessary to ensure that people don't lose interest in your content. If you write a long text wall without proper formatting then it is very likely that people will prefer to ignore the content.

Your landing page should be talking specifically about the product that you are offering. This is something that the visitors to your site will always get to read. So, trying to give concise details about it as well.

It always surprises me how web owners can spend a lot of time promoting their site to draw in visitors but they complain about conversion rate being low. That is proof that their landing page isn't effective and it needs an overhaul.

Make sure that your call to action doesn't lock out potential customers. If they won't buy your service immediately, your landing page copy should convince them to leave their email address or any other contact information so you can sell them the same product or service later.
