Spotify Turns to Far-Left Activist Groups to Censor Music as They Clap Down on 'Hate Content'

Weird things going on with the site. I wonder what they will boot. I see a lot of titles on the site alone that are iffy. But I don't like censorship.

I think music is music, this is the other way to express someones feelings, whether it's love, sadness, depression and including the hate. The spotify thinks that people right now are really crazy and easily to convince or encourages by someone and don't even know how to think clearly. People has the right to choose if what kind of music they want to listen and evolves enough to know the truth behind the music and have their own decision if they want to believe it or not to the lyrics.

Not sure if this is true, and it's fine censoring songs that actually promote hate or music by artists convicted of some heinous acts, problem is the basis of some of these groups for what they categorize as hate is too broad and they get too offended too quickly that this will negatively affect the overall quality of some genres of music and their listeners.

As long as there is freedom of expression, the internet would always have people freely dishing out hate works and even racist abuse. In as much as censorship would cut it down, I'm not sure it's going to be able to eliminate it completely.

Exactly. I actually have regrets that we have freedom right now because a lot of people nowadays don't even use that for a good purpose. However, I do agree with you that censorship alone can eliminate this completely. It needs other things apart from that.

Woah, let's not get too carried away here. I don't want to tell you what you should or shouldn't be feeling, but I don't think you should have regrets about us having freedoms at all! Sure some people might try and twist them and abuse them in a way that isn't positive, but I feel a majority of us have honestly good intentions with our freedoms. The majority shouldn't be punished because a small subset of us use freedom of speech to promote hatred. We should instead work to bring change using our freedoms, which is what Spotify if trying to to do, it seems.

I think it's also important to note that they're not censoring artists (at least not yet), but instead choosing not to promote artists via their official playlists. The artist's work is still available on Spotify, and other users are able to put those tracks into their own playlists, but Spotify is just choosing not to include them on their own playlists. This doesn't fall into censorship.

I would like to apologize for my actions, pal. I was just carried away by my emotions and I have no intentions or whatsoever to protest against our freedom. I am just upset that a lot of people nowadays don't use it for a good and proper purpose. I am also disappointed that not a lot of people are using their freedom to make a change but that doesn't mean I totally regret, maybe a part of me is regretful but not entirely.

Yeah, that's right. and I think the action of spotify will help those artist to earn more, because people will become curious and probably will buy that album. It's looks like an underground songs, and the curiosity of the people will ended up listening to that songs.

I agree, freedom of speech is important, but how is hate good? Enough bad news in the world as it is.

Absolutely valid point, here. I made the same point as well. It's Spotify's platform, and their current actions aren't exactly censorship, but rather a choice to quit promoting artists they don't agree with via their platform. There is no law that says Spotify must include R. Kelly and XXXTENTACION's work in their playlists, so I think that decision is absolutely up to Spotify's discretion.

I don't think this is weird for the site at all. Yes, there should be concerns over censorship and infringement of freedom of speech and while I'm a proponent of the First Amendment of course and I don't agree with censorship, I'm also against any form of content that promotes hate or violence toward specific groups of people.

I think if this is a concern for Spotify, then they're currently taking the appropriate steps to working toward a solution. After all, if you read their policy FAQ on the topic, they specifically state that "it’s important to remember that cultural standards and sensitivities vary widely. That means there will always be content that is acceptable in some circumstances, but is offensive in others, and we will always look at the entire context." As with any corporation's intentions, it's probably best to take what they say with a grain of salt, but isn't this better than doing nothing? If problems arise from their efforts, users should be the first to raise their concerns about Spotify's approach, but as with anything, we should probably give the initiative some time to see how effective it is. If they're actually wanting to remove music from their platform, they'll have to work with the record labels to do, as they have contracts with each artist/label for streaming rights and whatnot. If what Spotify is doing is actually infringing on rights, you can guarantee there will be lawsuits from artists and labels on the matter.

The only two cases I've heard of in regards to this lately were with R. Kelly and XXXTENTACION, both of whom had tracks removed from the Rap Caviar playlist. It's important to realize that their tracks were not removed from Spotify's catalogue, but removed from their own platform curated playlist. Spotify is not censoring these artists, they're simply choosing not to promote them via playlisting their tracks.

A private company gets to make an enforce its own rules. Trying to make a private company host material that it doesn't want to, that would be crazy. Spotify doesn't want their customer who are gay, black, islamic etc to see materials designed to insult or encourage hatred aginst them, because that is bad for business, and that sure makes sense to me. An online store is still a store, it works the same s your local Walmart.

I think the world as we know it is coming to an end. We are actually moving backward and not forward as we should be. The world at the moment has a leadership crisis. Everywhere you look in all corners they are no leaders. What is hate speech? Who decides? What is your opinion even if someone does not like it? Is this hate speech? The same is happening on twitter, they are banning people in droves. I don't think that this is fair.If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.If someone does not like me, that's fine, I would rather know and stay away from them.

If politics will get into the territory of arts then that would be restrictive. Can you imagine if the government will restrict the use of oil in painting because it is imported and would drain the finances of the government? That is downright outrageous but it happens not exactly as the example. With Spotify I think they should practice freedom of expression that even Satan can be adored.

I think they should crack down on it. I don't like censorship but I also don't think a public forum or music site like Spotify to have to sponsor this content. It is not fair to anyone. I think they should not allow any kind of hate speech.
