We all hit tough times as some point in our careers, but what we do in these tough times is what pushes us towards success, or simply kills our company.  You might get depressed and when you're down on your luck, but that's by not means a time to start slowing down your productivity.  If times are difficult, you actually need to increase your work hours and do whatever you can to boost your traffic and sales so you don't have to close your doors.  Many websites get shut down because the owner simply hit some tough times and couldn't overcome it, but you don't have to be in the same boat as long as you push forward.

Great website owners know that difficult times could be right around the corner, so they have contingency plans in place for when these times do happen, and they will usually happen once or twice in your career.  In this discussion I'll be going over 5 things great website owners do in difficult times, and they are:


Freelance to make some quick money
If you have a website, you likely have some skills that can be sold on freelancer platforms like seocheckout.  Do you know how to set up a website, set up email servers, design images, write content, etc.?  Well, you have some skills that other people do not, and they will pay you for your experience and help with their own problems  

Freelancing shouldn't be seen as a way to make a little bit of money, because there are plenty of people out there making full time incomes just from doing one task online that they're specialized in.  I know a programmer who makes $10,000+ a month down in the Philippines, and he is a full time freelancer.  If you know anything about the Philippines, you know that $10,000 a month is an astronomical amount of money down there and he lives like a king lol

If your sales tank, try out some freelancing and see where it goes.  It will never take off right away, because you'll have to build up your client base, but that's pretty normal.  Take your time and produce the best work possible, and you'll get great reviews and referrals in return

Write content for their websites
If you know how to type, you can make a few bucks online being a content writer.  You might not make as much as established writers, who have been doing it for years and have plenty of experience as well as recurring clients, but you can get some people that want to pay $10 or less for a short article.  Think about it, if you sell a 500 word article for $10, you can probably get 5 to 10 of those a day.  You can then build up your client list and pull in recurring jobs whenever someone needs a piece of content for their website   I actually sell a 500 word article for $25 because I'm much more experienced than a beginner, but I have great reviews as well as over deliver everything I've ever sent to the client.  My last client ordered 500 words and I wrote up an article that was close to 1,500 words because I couldn't get the point across in just 500 lol.  If you can do that, you'll get the best reviews possible and keep them coming back every day or week for more content

Send out discount emails to their email lists
Your email list can be tapped into when you have hard times, but you can't make it obvious that you're hurting or they will see it as a pity email being sent to them asking for a hand out.  You can send out a discount code to the next XX sign ups to your services, or products, and people will tend to jump on them.  In all of my newsletter sign up boxes I say they will get promos and discount codes at times, even if I don't plan on sending them out, because if I hit some hard times I know I can pull in some additional revenue by giving away a discount to newsletter subscribers

Offer better referral bonuses to members
People love referral bonuses because they get more for just telling someone about you.  Now, this isn't an affiliate program, you're just getting a referral and then discounting the referrers pricing or giving them something for free in exchange for the referral.  If you really want to give them a commission for their referral, you can, but it's not always necessary.

Sell some of their websites
If you're hitting hard times, you might want to sell a website or two, so you can bring in some quick cash.  Great website owners will do this all the time, mainly because they have dozens of websites up and running, and they will sell them off if they need some additional cash.  There are actually webmasters out there that do this, and realize how profitable it is, so they turn it into a business and sell dozens of websites each year

If you want to be considered a great website owner, you will need to stick around even if you're having difficult times.  You can't give up or tap out, because that's just you admitting defeat.  Instead, you need to do whatever it is in your power to keep the business going and profitable, no matter the situation.  If you need to do some freelance type services, you better figure out what actions you can sell, then get to building your client list as soon as possible.  Maybe you want to sell a website or two, which will bring in some quick cash, that's cool too as long as you can get everything exchanged and the money gets to your account   Being a great website owner means you know what to do when bad times happen, and they will, so be ready for them by having a plan in place just in case you need to produce some extra income in a short amount of time.
