How to decide when to sell your online business

How to decide when to sell your online business

When you start working for yourself, you may come to the conclusion that you want to sell your company, and you could come to that for many reasons.  People sell companies all the time, so don't worry if you wanted to sell yours but you aren't exactly sure if it's the right time.  Actually, there is no right or wrong time to sell a business, but there is a time when you'll get the most money in exchange for business transfer.  Obviously, the more money you're making means the more you can sell your business for in the long run.  You'll have to treat everything like you're raising a baby, and you'll be more successful down the road, which will bring in a bigger price tag when you do decide to sell in the future.

Selling a business can be tricky at times, mainly because you're not sure when to sell, which is what I'll be going over in this discussion.  When you're done reading, you'll be able to figure out if it's the right time to sell or if you need to keep working to make even more money when you do eventually think it's the right time to sell How to decide when to sell your online business

Are you too successful?
Companies that are showing massive growth, in a short amount of time, tend to sell for a pretty penny because there is enormous potential and you've tapped into something that can be very profitable.  If you show your potential buyers the amount of sign ups and sales you've gotten in the beginning, and it shows a constant incline, you will have a lot of people wanting to throw money at you for your business How to decide when to sell your online business  Of course, you'll have to disclose all your marketing methods, which will show them how you're getting the traffic, and if they think you're not doing everything you could they will then see even more potential and that means more profit How to decide when to sell your online business

You might be saying "Too successful is a great thing!" but it's not actually.  Think about a one man shop getting 10,000 orders overnight, they wouldn't be able to keep up with all of that and might want to sell their extremely successful business to someone that can handle it.  They'll get paid a great deal for their business, even if it hasn't been around long, because the buyer knows they can boost it and run everything just fine How to decide when to sell your online business

Are you looking to retire early?
Some people want to sell simply because they want to retire earlier than most people.  The thing about this is that you need to be successful enough to sell for the most amount you can.  If you're 30 and you think a $150,000 price tag for your business will be enough to retire on, you're insane.  Think about it, you'll want to estimate your life will go 100 years and that means you'll want to get as much as you can if you're still young.  Someone that is 60 or 70 selling a business won't really care as much about getting the max price because they really won't be alive to spend it.  If you're younger, you'll be able to spend much more money across your lifetime, so you'll want as much in return for your business as possible.

Think of your business, and estimate that you should make $75 to $150 a day for the rest of your life, and that's how much you should sell for.  If your business isn't making that much already, you won't be able to retire early since no one will pay you the amount you really need to live on.

Do you need money to start a new venture?
Some people will sell a business to start a new one.  They will have a successful business and some interested buyers that are willing to pay a premium, but they won't have enough to start a venture that could make more than their first business, so they will decide to sell their original business to take a chance on the next.

If you're making a decent amount each day, you can usually sell for a premium, and then you can use that money to start your next venture and also not worry about making money right away because you have a bunch of money saved up.  This isn't for everyone, mainly because not many people want to sell something that is already successful and start over, but it might be something you want to do How to decide when to sell your online business

Are you tired of working online?
Some people simply don't want to work online anymore because they're tired of the daily grind to pull in profits.  I know how they feel, because I've been tired of working many times, but I keep grinding because I'd rather work more and not have to answer to a boss than have someone tell me what to do lol How to decide when to sell your online business

It's understandable if you get tired, we've all been there and feel defeated once in a while, but if you truly think it's time to sell then no one can tell you otherwise.

In conclusion
If you want to sell your online business, just make sure you can get the most for your money, otherwise you'll regret selling when you figure out the company is making two or three times what you were after you sold it.  You'd be surprised how much proper marketing and branding can boost your sales, so be sure you're coming up on your profits hitting a plateau before you decide to sell early.  If you're already at your peak, and you want to retire, be sure to sell for enough to live off of an potentially pass down if you're already considered a senior citizen.

Well this is the topic which made me confusing many times, and most of the time my decisions result in low price sales when it's about selling online business.
If the business is going good and making money, i feel sorry to sell it because i feel how good it is to keep and make money keep coming, while in opposite, if it's not making nice amount of money then it would sell for cheap price, even so cheap that it doesn't worth advertising sale. So how to get out of this confusion... LOL

That is the dilemma of a business owner when it comes to selling. Why would you sell your business if it is earning good profit? On the other hand, when the business is losing then why would a buyer purchase your business? But I guess the real decision comes from the necessity that if you need money then you will sell your business regardless of the present condition of sales and profits.

Don't be afraid to sell your business when it's successful and you think you could squeeze out a little more income before selling your online business. It's important to understand that the online industry can really fluctuate in terms of trends and your business may not be as profitable even in the near future. So, if you get a really good offer, take a moment to think before saying no right away. Calculate how much you need to earn per day or per month in order to achieve the offer that you have received, your past profit trends if it's consistent or you just saw a random boom due to certain current events, and if you can handle the amount of work you need to do in order to get the same amount of money in an x number of years.

Too many people think their websites are going to make millions down the road, but what they don't understand is everything fluctuates and your profits could tank next month. Another reason people don't want to sell is that they will give offers and assume they can just keep building up their business and get a better offer down the road. The initial company or business that made you an offer might not be able to afford you if you get too big, and now you're going to have a hard time finding a medium sized investor who wants to take on a semi-successful business that needs to be built. It's like an awkward stage and you're successful but you're not amazing just yet, and investors will want to see where you go before they start to think about buying your sites or business entirely.

To sell online business is not supported by me. Because if I can establish an online business that will give me benefit for the life time. I shall generate huge and huge profit by generating traffic or traffic based work for the life time. Basically a good page rank will generate huge traffics for you in this world.

The major options that I have considered to be very useful in this note are :

Looking to retire early.
Desiring to stop online job.
Lack of time to commit to the online business.

When there three options stares at me in the face, then I would know certainly that my time as a freelancer is over.

You are right on this as when we fail to create time for the work that we do, it then means that it is definitely time to quit. I have come to notice that we really have to remain focus and resolute when we are pushing for the time corner of our lives since that is the only way we can get to become the best in our endeavors.

Exactly, time is everything when it comes to managing any kind of business whether it's an online business or offline business. The time invested in the business is what makes it progress, so when you see yourself in a situation where you can't be able to handle the business as a result of not having enough time to put in the business.

I might consider selling an online biz I wasn't so attached to. In other words, possibly it was in a niche I didn't care much about - aside from the money. In fact, a lot of people build sites just to sell them - and much better if they're in something they dislike! OK, is that anyone's story or does anyone think likewise?

I do think that knowing when to call it quits can be just as important as knowing when to dive in when it comes to starting a business. Often you hear about businesses that were at the top of their game several years ago, who are then fledgling presently - and it makes me think "what if they'd just sold it all when they were at their peak?"

I think it can be hard, though - there's a lot of emotional decisions that play into it, as well as the rational, business minded ones.

As long as I am earning profits from my business, I will never sell it. Since the primary aim of launching a business is to make money and as long as the business is making me money, I do not have any reason for selling it. However, if I do not have time to manage the business or if I have a better idea, I might sell my business. Another reason for selling my business is "if it is making a loss." There is no point in running a business that is not making me money. I will benefit more from selling the business for one-time payment instead of making a loss every month.

Yeah, that's right. I think much better to keep your business while you're still earning profits, and if you want to sell it during that time, you should have another idea or business in mind.

I suggest you just continue to strive and persevere. I think efforts will paid off someday. Do whatever you know what is good for your business. Taking risks is part of being a business man. My sister is also a business woman, she do whatever it takes to have sales. So she build her shop and also try online shop. Try it, I think there are not much costs in online shops.

I have noticed that lot of offline business users are moving to online. And they seem to be enjoying it. And often they call it a retirement instead. So not sure if anyone is that rich with online income alone. And if they are doing any good business in the due process. I'd surely not be quitting anytime soon. So far it seems like selling online business is not that going to be easy from what I have seen.

The truth is that it takes a lot of time and effort to manage offline business, I know this from my experience with my own business. It was never easy at all in any way for me, when it comes to marketing, it was hell, as I used direct marketing but getting it into online base, eventually everything became a bit more easier for me, especially in being able to get on with internet marketing.

Yes it seems like online business plays a much better role in that case. I have seen some of the people making good money with the online. And they require less efforts too. So depending on how you choose to make money. Online business needs to be planned. Because lot of time can be wasted online and one has to be really focused to get result.

You're right. having an online business is the best way for those retiree to earn something while enjoying their time. It's really hard not to consider that specially for those came from offline job. But for those who's working online, I think it's still not reason the retirement to sell that.

It's the reverse with me because I retired from managing a physical business and now I'm concentrating on being successful in online ventures. But you gave me a good idea on how to build my online business and to sell it for a good profit although I know that it's not that simple because before one can sell his business, it has to be quote successful, and getting buyers is another problem.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You may have started out with a physical business, but I think the same concepts still apply in the end. I think the first three points can easily be applied to owning and selling a physical business, and the 4th one just needs to be changed from "Are you tired of working online?" to "Are tired of working in an office?" But in any case, I think that any kind of business owner can utilize this advice to either retire entirely, or move on to new projects and ventures.

I think I should have sold my blog when it was ranked highly, and had some benefit to users. Since I stopped posting awhile ago, I doubt it is worth anything today. I haven't checked recently, but it might be something that is not really worth money anymore..sadly.

"If you're 30 and you think a $150,000 price tag for your business will be enough to retire on, you're insane."

It might seem like I'm pointing this out just for the sake of arguing, but this really depends on the cost of living in your location and what sort of quality of life you want.

For example, where I currently live, I actually live pretty well on only a $150 a month. $30 of that goes towards bills, and the rest is for groceries and small luxuries. It's unthinkable in a place like New York City, where I used to live, but living simply in a place with an already low cost of living means a penny goes a long way. At 26, if I were to live to 100, I'd probably be good on 87K, which means I even have some money to spare.

That is unless something breaks my sanity and I suddenly decide I want to start driving Ferrari's and wearing Omega watches.

Wow - I'd love to be able to live on that much a month, that's incredible. That's definitely not the case where I live, $150,000 would only last a few years when you factor in rent or a mortgage, bills, and just general day to day expenses like food and gas for your vehicle.

I can't imagine thinking at 30 that living off 100,000 would be okay for retirement!

Oh I'm well aware of just how crazy that may sound to people. However, I definitely wouldn't say that it's considered normal even where I live. Minimum income here is around $400 a month (but on average people make more than that), and while that doesn't sound like much, it's enough to live like a normal person. Sure everyone complains because they want the latest smartphones and 4K HDTVs, but the things that truly matter are very affordable. Needless to say, no one here has died of hunger or walks around with tattered clothing.

That being said, I've taken it further by choosing to live a somewhat ascetic lifestyle. Living as simply as possible is a joy to me, and obviously the more simply you live, the lower your cost of living goes. I'm blessed to have had the opportunities to save a lot of money and build a place of residence for myself. If I had to pay rent/mortgage I'd certainly need more, but thankfully all I have to worry about now is paying my electricity and water bills, and of course some meager property tax.

If I have a profitable business and I want to retire then it's probably time to sell. But only if the market value of the business is substantial enough for my retirement needs. Much more if I'm tired of handling the operation of my business, selling will give me relief. Or perhaps it is time to sell when my interest turns to another business.

It is easy to sell your business but I think its hard to build one like the kind of business that people will surely want it. Thanks for giving us always a wonderful advice. You are a very helpful person but in my personal experience I'm too young when it come's to skills like that. For now I'm just looking forward to make my blog earn and if I succeed I'm happy for it.

You're right. Maybe if the person already has a lot of experience in online business, its easy for them to sell their business and make another one, but for beginners, I think i need to enjoy the online business first, and if I don't have time anymore to manage it, maybe that's the time for me to sell it.

I think that if and when you realize that you're not cut out or you're not happy managing your online business is the correct time to sell it. It may be because you have no passion for it or you want to dedicate your time in doing something else.

I think before you plan to sell your business just don't forget how you work hard for that business to built. it takes months years to build that thing but selling is easy since it was then already built and have connections. Just think of it first before you take action.

Has anyone read rich dad, poor dad? This is the number one , book followed on being rich. If you want to be really rich, you need to build a business and sell it, at a profit. Sometimes owning a business is like being employed by yourself. If you hold onto this mentality, you will never be rich. I would sell my online business when it is making the most money. Normally a valuation for an online business is 10 times its value. If its making $150,000 per year and you sell it for 1,000,000, i think this is a good deal. You can always start another one. This is how to make true wealth.
