Consulting has been a great way to make a lot of money online or offline, because you're seen as an expert in your field and people are paying you for your knowledge Consulting works if you can prove that you know what you're talking about, because the people hiring you will need to be sure you can teach them something. If you don't know what you're talking about, you probably can't be a consultant, but you can always do your research and still be a consultant in any niche you want Yes, it does take some time to learn everything in a niche, and yes it's difficult to tell if you will make any money being a consultant, but you will never know until you try
I've been a consultant many times, and I don't even sell that as a service, I just get approached and people ask me to consult their teams in order to help them with SEO and marketing I almost always accept the offers because they tend to pay much more than you would think. They only time I will decline is if they don't cover air fair and lodging if I have to fly to them and stay overnight or for a weekend. Think about it, if I have to fly across the United States and get a hotel for a few nights, that eats up a good amount of money that could have been my profits. If the company is serious about getting me in as a consultant, they will likely pay the extra fees to get me there, which isn't much considering they usually pay me $10,000 to $10,000 for a weekend of work lol I wish I had these gigs all the time, and only worked on weekends, because I would actually make much more money than I do right now
Being a consultant isn't a difficult thing if you know what you're talking about, and below are a few reasons why you should think about becoming one.
You could be seen as the authority
A consultant is always seen as an authority by the company that is hiring them. If you do a great job during the time you're suppose to be consulting, and the company runs better because of you, you will likely be invited back from time to time to consult new teams or teach about new systems or methods that could potentially help out the business. This is why I love consulting for SEO and online marketing, it's always changing and people always want to know what the newest method is that brings in the most sales The companies that were happy with my consulting will bring me back in from time to time and have me reteach what I did previously and add in additional stuff that came up since the last visit. And this is why you always need to be researching your niche or industry
You will begin to get great referrals
If your client hires you to do consulting, and they love the outcome, they will likely refer you to their friends or colleagues who own businesses of their own. We all know that referrals are amazing, especially if it's a B2B referral You're literally getting a referral from a client who paid thousands to have you come in and do some consulting, so the referral knows how much you charge and what you do already, which is the toughest thing to sell when in a conversation over the phone They are already sold, they just want to get in touch with you and hear how you speak and if you're the real deal. After they do a quick evaluation, they will want to hear your process and what you'll do for them, then they'll hire you to come out and help their teams with whatever you're consulting for
You can charge a premium without doing any actual work
Since you're the professional and authority within the niche you're consulting in, you can charge a premium without having to actually do the work yourself. Think about it, if you're a consultant you just go and tell people how to do something so they know how to do it on their own after you leave. You don't have to show them how to do it at all if you don't want to, but you'll likely have to jump in when someone really doesn't understand what you're saying, which is rare. You can tell them what to do, where to click, what to write, how to write, how to find something online, what to look for, etc. without having to write a single word or type on a keyboard Consultants are there to tell teams what to do and how to do it, they're not there to hold their hands and do the work for them, and that's why you don't have to do much except show them what to do and what not to do
In conclusion
Consulting is a lucrative business if you can crack into it. The only downside is if you get too good at it, you'll never be home. Think about it, if you work every weekend, you'll likely leave on Friday and come home on Monday. This means you'll be working for 4 days a week and getting paid for 2 of them, but you'll be getting paid very well Now, if you have people who are fighting over you, you might lose a lot of clients or you might be working non stop and never be home, which isn't a great thing for a lot of people. This is the main reason I don't go full time into consulting, because I want to watch my kids grow up and I never want to miss a baseball, softball, soccer, hockey, basketball, football, etc. game they happen to be playing in. Consulting is definitely a great thing to get into if you want to make a lot of money, but remember that you might be too good at it and actually have to turn down $10,000 for a weekend of work just to keep a $4,000 a month client on board. It's easy and difficult at the same time, but it's good money if you're great at it
