We all want top rankings for our websites, but we never think of the benefits and downfalls of doing SEO can bring on. Sure, optimizing our pages for the search engines is a great thing, and every business should be doing it, but over optimizing can actually be a bad thing and hurt your rankings. SEO is something best left to the professionals, but that doesn't mean you can't learn it on your own and implement it over time. I would never recommend building a massive amount of links in a short amount of time, if you're not sure what will happen, because you could actually be hurting your own rankings and putting a lot more work on someones plate, which would cost you much more money.
SEO can make you rich, or it can kill your hopes and dreams of topping the rankings, it all depends on what you do and how you do it. If you're not sure of what you're doing, outsource the work to a credible company that will keep you save. If you're sure of what you're doing, then I don't really have to tell you to take it slow and only build high authority links to boost your rankings
In this discussion I'll be going over 6 ways SEO can make or break your business, and they are:
Make It:
Your rankings could jump up to page 1
Everyone wants their website to pull in thousands of visitors each and every day, and this is why we all do SEO to our pages. If an SEO campaign is done just right, over a few months, you will notice your rankings begin to top the charts of a low to medium competition niche, which will then boost your traffic each day. If you're in a more competitive niche, it will take 6+ months to see anything positive, but that's pretty common
Page 1 rankings will definitely boost your sales, and that's why a ton of website owners always try to get that coveted #1 position which gets 41% of the organic traffic for each search term
Investors can find you through your rankings for specific keywords
When people think of SEO, they think of boosting their rankings to get customers coming in, but it's also a great way to get investors to see your business and possibly contact you. Think about it, investors want to find businesses that need a boost, and if you're doing great things with your website you'll normally not have time to search for investors.
Investors will come to you simply because of your top rankings putting you in front of them, which will intrigue them because they didn't see you before when they did the same search. An investor wants to put money into a company that is starting off, because they can usually boost you more than a company that is already set in their ways.
Your sales will increase when you implement a successful SEO campaign
Your sales are guaranteed to increase when you implement a successful SEO campaign because you will be on the top of the search engines. People searching for what you have will now be clicking through to your website, purchasing what you have for sale, signing up for your email, and even sharing what they've found with their friends and family.
Successful SEO takes time, so be patient and only do the right things, and you will get that top placement eventually
Break It:
Your rankings could be lost completely
SEO can really hurt your website if you don't know what you're doing. If you're building 10,000 backlinks each day by using software, you're likely going to kill any SEO you've already done, mainly because it's going to be seen as spamming websites in hopes to boost your rankings. The search engines don't take kindly to website owners who try to boost their rankings artificially, by using software designed to do SEO, but this software usually does more harm than good.
If your rankings tank, you've likely just gotten a penalty, which is a difficult thing to get rid of if you don't know what you're doing. Sure, you could pay a company to help lift the penalty, but that will cost a decent amount of money that could have been saved up if you just didn't try to cut corners.
You might not be in business for long if you rely solely on search engine traffic
If your website is relying solely on search engine traffic to be successful, you might be closing your doors if you obtain a penalty. A penalty will kill your rankings, which will drop all of your traffic, and that means your sales will tank.
You'll need to focus on plenty of traffic streams if you want to stay successful even after you get a penalty. You will be able to rely on your other revenue streams while you lift the penalty, if you can lift it at all
SEO is difficult and can be screwed up fairly easy
When you start putting up websites to profit from, you probably don't want to do your own off page SEO, mainly because it's a fairly easy thing to mess up. You might build thousands of backlinks, hurting your rankings, and you might not even know what you did wrong. You might also mess up your on page optimization because you read an ebook that told you to make your keyword density at 12%, but in reality it should be around 3% or 4%, and now your website is messed up until you fix this problem.
There are a lot of things you can screw up with your own SEO, so be sure to research everything multiple times prior to implmenting the techniques yourself. If you aren't sure of what to do, outsource the work to a company that does, and be safe in the rankings.
In conclusion
SEO can definitely make your company a lot richer, but it can also kill your profits almost overnight, so be sure to stay within the good graces of the search engines and steadily climb the rankings. Boost your rankings over time, don't cut corners to make a quick buck, and your profits will gradually climb. Play it safe, and your website will be just fine
