Marketing is evolving more and more each year, so if we don't stay up to date with it, we'll fall behind quicker than we'd like to think about. Just a few years ago no one thought about making their website mobile friendly, and now it's basically a requirement if you want to be competitive within the search results. A few years before that, we weren't thinking about our business profile on Facebook and marketing to all of the prospects there, because it wasn't as good as it is today. Just looking at these few things shows us all that online marketing is an ever changing atmosphere and needs to be kept up with in order to stay on top or just have a fighting chance with your competitors.
As for offline marketing, well there's a whole different story, you can do the same things that worked 20 years ago to pull in leads and they still work just as well or even better than they did before People and businesses have been using the same offline marketing techniques for many years because they simply work, and they work well if you implement them right. Think about it, a simple logo along with your website on a pen will sit in someones office for years. Do you think a banner ad will come back to someones memory in 2 or 3 years? How often have you thrown away a pen? People forget about things they see online because we all have a short attention span, but no one throws out pens because they can be used at a later time regardless of what website is stamped on them
Below are a few old school techniques to marketing your business that still work today
Hand out business cards whenever the chance arises
One of the cheapest ways to get your business in the hands of a potential customer or client is to hand them a business card. I've actually written up entire discussions on how a great looking business card can land you a lot of leads compared to a basic templated one. When you get your business card in the hands of someone that is interested, you're giving them a direct line to you and they trust that a lot more than finding your contact information on a website
Business cards are known to increase your sales and sign ups for small fish as well as whales
Give away services or products as prizes for auctions or contests
You won't profit from this style of marketing in the beginning, but you will likely get some referrals from the person you're doing the work for. You'll have to donate your time or products to contests where you are worth winning. For example, if you're donating an SEO service to a golf outing, it's highly unlikely you'll be hitting your target demographic. Now, if yo'ure donating your SEO services to an SEO convention that does a raffle to anyone who is attending, that's where you'll make more money
Get strategic when you target this type of giveaway and it will benefit you immensely.
Get your name in as a public speaker at an event
This method pairs up well with the giveaway at events because you'll be able to pitch the giveaway as you're speaking You'll need to obviously target specific speaking events in order to target the right people, just like when you give away services for contests. You can speak to people interested in your niche and industry, and they will see you as a leader within that industry. They will then sign up with you in order to get more leads, sign ups, sales, emails, etc. (if that's what you're doing)
Work with local printers and publications
This method can't really be done online unless you're working with someone that allows you to add a link within their newsletters, which doesn't happen too often. What you'll be doing is working with local and regional newspapers to get an small insert within the pages of their newspapers. It doesn't take much work for them to do this for you, but it will still cost you some money and patience. It will cost money, because they need to profit, and you will need to print up the inserts yourself. You will be able to target 10,000 or even 1,000,000 households with your insert, the amount is up to you.
Snail Mail EDDM
This doesn't have the best success rate, especially if you're selling an SEO or Website Design service. You'll need to sell a physical product if you want EDDM to work. EDDM stands for Every Door Direct Mail and you'll basically be sending your post card out to thousands of homes within a specific area. You can target the homes based on medium income, which I highly suggest you do, because you can be sure the families you're targeting can afford whatever you're trying to get them to buy
In Conclusion
These are just 5 of the many offline marketing techniques that you can use to boost your sales much more than if you just wing it with everything you do offline. People who solely do online marketing forget the power of offline marketing and how many sales it can actually bring in, which is a whole lot if done right I wouldn't suggest you try every method at the same time, probably just one or two in order to get your feet wet, then branch out and make even more money

It may have been you that actually inspired me to go and print my own business cards, and I have been using them a great deal lately to spread the word about my skills and about my services offered. I recently did do a public appearance to promote my writing, and I handed out business cards at that, and I have already seen a great response because of this through my emails and blog traffic. I guess I am combining the business card idea with the public speaking idea from above, of course, and this tactic is getting me more online attention.
