Having good taste could be hurting your blog

A lot of people who are in the marketing field have good taste, and this could actually be hurting their blogs.  Having good taste will help out when you're trying to build a website or writing up taglines for marketing purposes, but that good taste is often difficult to convey into your content writing for marketing purposes.  People can usually write up good headlines in order to get people to come in and read, but the same tricks with headlines don't work within content, so you'll need to think a little different.

Now, I'm not saying you can't write up your own content, not at all.  I'm saying you need to be less worried about the content itself and just write for the readers who will be coming to your website.  If you worry too much about how well the article or blog post is written, you won't be publishing as much content as you could be, and this means you won't get as much traffic and sales in the long run.  Usually, someone will read up on a few ebooks about how to blog and they will implement everything they've read, which will usually come back to bite them in the butt.  This is because those types of ebooks are written in a way to teach you everything, but don't teach you how to write for your readers.  You'll basically be a writing robot after you're done reading these types of ebooks, but you'll have to put your own flair into the work if you want it to be seen as amazing.

So how can you publish blog posts effectively and efficiently at the same time?  Well, below I'll be going over 3 main tips you should work on in order to do just this Having good taste could be hurting your blog

Check your taste at the door
You need to understand that putting your own taste into your blog posts or content generation should be left at the door.  You're writing for your visitors, not for yourself, so you need to know what they want to read and then write about it.  Companies who don't post as often usually have problems when people are fighting over the content solely based on their own personal taste, which puts you at an advantage because you're churning out 10x as much content as they are Having good taste could be hurting your blog

One company I've read about was not getting enough content published because the board of directors had to approve everything prior to publishing.  This just sets back the writers and makes your business not look as productive as it should be.  The downside about this is that the writers were seen as not doing their jobs because the amount of traffic increase wasn't what the directors had expected, but it was the directors fault!  Companies like this are crippling themselves and opening the doors for their competitors to take over lol.

After the directors realized it was a lot of work to manage the writers, they got rid of the approval process and gave the writers creative freedom.  This turned the traffic faucet on and the directors were extremely happy, which made the writers look extremely well within their eyes.

Blogging needs to be a priority
As a full time online marketer, I've known for a long time that blogging is one of the first things I do with my websites each day, but not many people do this.  What you can do is create a schedule of operations that need to be done each day, and make blogging the first thing to do.  You don't have to publish a 5,000 word article each morning, but you need to publish something in order to overtake your competition.  Once you get seen as an authority within your industry, you won't have to post as often, but you should still be posting a few times a week to keep people interested.

Not blogging frequently will just open the doors for your competition, just like the company I mentioned who needed to approve everything before it was published, which shouldn't be done.

Your blog needs to be seen as a staff member
If you do this right, you will have goals for your blog, just like how you will set goals for yourself as well as your employees if you have some.

Think of why you're actually blogging.

  • Are you trying to increase awareness about your website?
  • Are you trying to gain more traffic through the search engines?
  • Are you trying to increase engagement on your blog posts?

Figuring out why you're blogging will help you create specific goals.  If you're not measuring your blogs goals, you're just going to fall behind.  So, start measuring the success of your blog posts and scale them over time Having good taste could be hurting your blog

By tossing aside your own personal taste, you're going to churn out content on a massive scale and see that not everyone has the same taste as you.  You might write up a 2,000 word article about something you aren't loving fully, but others might love it and let you know, which will increase the chances of hitting your goals Having good taste could be hurting your blog

In Conclusion:
If you put your own personal taste within your blog posts, you better be blogging about yourself and not for your company.  If you put taste aside, you will notice a lot more content going onto your website and the search engines will likely reward you over time for the quality content being published on your pages Having good taste could be hurting your blog

I don't totally agree with you because whatever is worth doing is worth doing well,is just like cooking tasteless food because you are preparing for your customers and expect some good traffic and patronage,I don't think this would really work.My input would be bloggers shouldn't kill themselves about what others think, just do your best and leave at that.

I agree with you somewhat but some people focus too much on their own ideas and even when it obviously isn't working they will still push forward without compromise. I think there is some truth in this statement and the OP's as you should always aim to please yourself first in making content so you know that you can stand by it, but at the same time you also should not be in too much of a bubble that the content becomes too disconnected from the audience trends and tastes.

I agree that when you cook even as a chef who cook for other people, it is your taste that matters which means you will cook the best dishes according to your taste. I cannot imagine someone cooking for a group of people that he hates so he will cook something that is not palatable. But that’s getting out of bounds already. What I mean is that good taste can never be hurting your blog because that is you. Take note that the blog is your expression and you can never be wrong when you are honest.

Razzy,
For me, this is your most controversial post yet. It is hard to take one's own taste out of work which must be pumped out so frequently, and it is hard to pump out good work so frequently is one feels he or she is not allowed to express personal and individual tastes. Don't get me wrong; I get what you are saying here; however, this is hard for a lot of writers because it is so difficult to be so objective about certain subjects, and to take the personal ego out of them, and still feel caring enough to keep on creating content. We are not robots, so this is a difficult proposition and balance to find, if you ask this old man.

I agree, in that most of us have our own styles while writing and it is hard to adjust to new audiences sometimes, but it can be done. I think being ego less sometimes is the way to go about getting lots of people to read our blogs.

Having a flow while we write can be an exciting way to go about blogging. One thing some writers have yet to realize is that most of the time, there is need for us to just write and watch how our readers react and not necessarily whether our article is worth our taste or not.

This is why you should only blog or write about topics you genuinely love. Some people are involved in communities that they care very little if any about. But the opportunity to make money is there - so they dive in and just try and cater to the audience best they can. That's not the way. It reminds me of some department stores and businesses. You walk in to buy something or conduct business, and you need some advice or expert opinion on a potential purchase. Like a laptop or a tablet or a flatscreen HD tv.

The person who mans the floor is a salesman or saleswoman. Their job is to get you to buy a product or two, and keep you from leaving the store empty handed. However, they know very little about the items they're selling. So while they can't tell you what extras or features the product has, they can tell you that they think you should buy it. So this pertains to people who run blogs or websites. If you think certain things in politics are beneath you to talk about for example, then maybe running a political blog is not for you. Because if it's hot in politics, then it's your job to discuss it with your visitors in a post. It's the same thing with the news. It's in poor taste to talk about the casualties of a mass shooting or terrible highway accident, and show the bodies strewn about. But IT IS breaking news, and as a news organization, it's your job to inform the public about the events that have occurred or are currently occurring.

Oh really? This is like asking those with good taste to lower their standards. I feel the author should be themselves and write without faking. The readers who get inspired by how you write will stick around.

For example, it will be hard for you to write what a reader like me wants. I want short posts and to the point. But that is just me who doesn't like reading long posts.

So what I am saying is that a writer can't leave their own taste at the door. Just write and be unique. Be you.

I had the same gut reaction here as you did, and i am not sure how I could ever even change my taste or my standards, at this point, in my writing or content-creating career. You have to be yourself and be authentic, or, eventually, people will sniff you out as a phony, and they will be done with you and go seeking something authentic elsewhere.

Hmmnnn.... I think you're only trying to say here is not to focus too much of the writing on your personal choices or preferences, right? Instead be general and broad in a sense that it should be applicable to all readers. But at the same time, a well written blog for me is partnered with a personal touch. I feel that it shouldn't be written as some form of wikipedia setting. Or else, I will just be searching google for straight up facts. This is somewhat true and false at the same time. If you venture too much on your preferences that you lose essence of the article you're writing, then your blog is doomed. But if it just wanders off with a personal touch with just a splash of personal posts/ information, then I think it's a well written article. But this is just, me I don't know about the rest though.

Yes being too much attached is what he said is wrong. Because the more we get attached we don't do things that earn money. Instead we do things that we think are right. And that seems to be what holds back many blogging platforms. So people have to be really understanding about how they handle the blogging. Priorities in short.

I think posting regularly definitely helps. That way one can be doing a lot better with their content. And some of the time this type of the practice helps in many ways. I think if you are considering the blogging long term. Then you should focus on the taste and the focus of the content. That's what is going to be a deal breaker in that case. I guess it's hard to say what may hurt or may not hurt.

With the way that rankings are going, it is always necessary for us to make contents that will keep the people visiting the site as it is going to be helpful in a way or another especially when we are talking of how we are going to interact better with them. It can never be that perfect for all, but if we can be able to work things out, it is definitely going to work wonders at the end of the day.

I have noticed that interaction in comments helped to some extent. And another thing is getting people to interact on the page of the blog on social media can be helpful too. Some of the time that does work out to some extent. I guess depending on how the interaction works on the blog, the traffic and ranking may change.

Excellent post and agree to everything you have mentioned. I do try post as often as I can that is why am also always keen on finding others to help. So while I am creating content I have other people generating content for me and push as much as I can out. I also, like to have guest posts on my blog but hard to find.

You are right, nice write up razzy, you completely nailed it.

Sometimes we have to leave our comfort zones and create those articles that will get the attention of the reader, the reason why some blogs don't have more subscribers and monthly visitors than the others, is because they lack flexibility. Some blogs are just too strict with the type of write ups they put there, they don't know it bores people at times. Being flexible helps.

Stepping outside of your usual boundaries is great and will help you grow as a writer and freelancer. However just be certain that when you deviate from the norm, it's something you're passionate about and can really - genuinely bring a new aspect or angle to. If none of those things apply then it's best to seek out alternate content in other arenas.

You must wow the search engines by using keywords on your title and content body, but you will also need to wow the readers. If only concentrate to wow the search engines, you cannot wow readers. If you cannot wow the readers, your content will not get traffic. It is good to have a top position on SERP, however, having top position does not guarantee traffic if you do not have valuable contents. Therefore, first thing that a blogger or content developer must consider is writing for readers.

SEO sometimes can be really tricky thing. Though easy to learn but harder to execute. And especially on the content side. I am not sure how some of the people can manage that. I find it really harder if you ask me. It just gets things a bit roughed on the end.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Yes, you can easily learn SEO, but it is harder to implement what you have learned. For example, I know backlinks count, however, when it comes to generating backlinks for my blogs, I always fail. I know generating social signals boost my search engine ranking, however, my problem is how do I generate a lot of social signals.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think even for implementation it's not hard. Guest posting gives you backlink. And All in one SEO plugin can take care of the on page SEO. And then what's left is schema. That can be managed as well. So there isn't much to consider on the backlink side. I'd say on that note it's not something worst though.

Branding is also important. If you are able to brand your business, your website will gain recognization. Establishing an authority also helps. Whatever niche you are using, your website should be seen as the authority on that niche.

I agree. I feel like I have a good finger on the pulse of what is trendy or not but I know enough not to rely on it solely as I am only a person and can be wrong many times so I rely a lot more on research than my own taste. Sometimes I will prefer a certain type of design or content but will go against my own biases just so I can cater better to the public because I know that at the end of the day I should aim to try to please my customers and not just myself.

Yeah, that is correct. The thing with keeping those that visit your site for one reason or another in mind is that it is always going to be a good means of getting to keep them aware that you are doing things right.

I think that once the visitors to the site know that you are pushing out contents often, they will feel at home to read in order to learn better.

Business blogs shouldn't be about personal tastes so I totally agree with this post. The purpose of the company blog is to attract traffic and increase conversion. To do that, you have to give the readers what they need and want. That may or may not coincide with your own preferences which is just fine because after all, this is not your personal or lifestyle blog. You are trying to sell company products or services, not yourself or your inclinations. Injecting your personal tastes can limit the information that your readers deserve.

I think that it depends. What if the person has a personal blog that revolves around their life or their points of view? Then it's obvious that you would be writing your own opinions and add your "taste" to your content. But if we're talking about more professional websites/blogs then obviously your main priority should be following the vision of the company.

But regardless, I believe that you should never just write something without adding at least a bit of yourself into it. That's what makes it special.

I disagree if your altering your blog just to maybe get some people visiting your blog, then what is the point of owning a blog. A blog is a personal expression of yourself, your thoughts, your ideas. And if you compromise, then your not being true to yourself.

I agree that you are writing for your visitors. But disregarding your taste to suit the taste of your visitors would be unfair to you. And how can you be natural if you are suppressing something inside of you? I would probably write about what I feel regarding my taste although in a subtle way so as not to offend my visitors. At least I would be natural in my writing and it would be easier to write that way.

There is a saying that says that one should eat what they like but dress what other like. I have disputed this statement by saying that it is not possible to please everyone. I dress to please myself and this I do by knowing what suits me, What looks good on me will surely be appreciated by others.

None of us know what our viewers or our buiyers want,. We have to just showcase our products talking about how they could be used to advantage whatever they are.

This is really very intriguing topic but this is how I understood it. Often, as a writer, I think that we have a tendency of being concerned with our reputation in terms of the writing style itself or our personal taste in certain topics. You should be well adjusted to the actual need or demands and keep your own taste at bay. Productivity will be compromised if this will be put on your priorities. No wonder you are able to keep up writing 10 or more contents a week.

I can see how you strongly advise in blogging frequently. But of course that's on the grounds that quality will not be compromised.

I guess this is one of the reasons many bloggers fail. And I was one of those. They focus too much on the little things that those who visit the site may not even notice. Prioritizing the needs of your audience must come first, your taste and anything else you prefer, last.

Good thing is creating compelling content can be learned and so far I've learned a lot.
