How to price your SEO, writing, or web design services the right way

Whenever you want to start working online, you'll have to hone your skills and be the best possible at what you're doing.  Selling an SEO, writing or web design service isn't the easiest thing even if you're the best at it, and that's why you need to learn the business side of things and not just the service side.  Good sellers will be able to do a great job or they can run their freelance business like a champ, but great sellers will be able to do both!  You need to differentiate yourself from the masses of competitors on freelancing platforms in order to stand out from the crowd and keep people coming back time and time again to hire you for your services.

A lot of service providers come into a problem when they try to price their freelancing services.  They feel that since they are good at what they do, they can charge the highest possible dollar amount and make millions each year from a bunch of sales.  In reality, it doesn't really work like that because even if you're the best at what you do, you need to have a reputation on each platform you're selling on before the masses start to trust you.  I recently started selling my writing services on seocheckout, and the sales were slow in the beginning (still are a little), but they began to pick up slightly after I gained a couple of reviews.  I now have some dedicated buyers who come back each week and hire me to write long articles for their websites.  The longer I have my services on seocheckout, the more clients I will get because of my positive reviews and experience How to price your SEO, writing, or web design services the right way

In this discussion, I'll be going over how to price your freelancing service.  It doesn't matter what you're selling here on seocheckout, you will need to know what to price your services at in order to be competitive.

Your Price VS What you should charge
A lot of people think they can sell a $1150 service on their own website, get sales, and then come to a freelancing platform and sell at the same price.  Sadly, it doesn't work like that because people coming to platforms where freelancers are posting services, want to find someone at a decent price that is usually below the average.

Your service may be top notch, but you'll have to price your services at a lower amount in the beginning in order to build up your reputation on each platform.

Auditing your competition
In order to figure out exactly what you should be selling your service at, you need to check out the competition.  You can simply go to the services section in the marketplace where you would be posting your own service, and check the competition to see what they're selling it at.  Of course, there will be the very low-quality services selling for pennies on the dollar, so you should exclude them from your research.  Look for the freelancers who are already getting sales, have positive reviews, and see what they are pricing their services at.

After you check around 10 or 15 of the top sellers in your marketplace section, you will then have to figure out the average price, then undercut that price so you can make some sales.  You can always increase your pricing later on after you get some reviews built up, so you can make more money from each sale.

Beginner pricing to pull in clients
When you start off, you won't be able to price your services as high as you'd like.  You will actually have to undercut your pricing twice so it's like you're discounting your discount.  This way you will get in first time buyers, and veteran buyers at the same time.  You will be able to get those on the fence buyers to purchase from you and take a chance with your service.  After they get their report or files when you're done with the work, they will hopefully love your work enough to keep coming back.

Getting first-time buyers is crucial when you're just starting off, you need to treat them like they're a king or queen and do the best possible work you can for them.  After a few of these clients, you will have plenty of reviews because they will likely keep coming back a few times, which means you will likely get a few reviews from each buyer How to price your SEO, writing, or web design services the right way

Don't undersell yourself
If you already have the reputation of a top tier seller, you won't want to undersell yourself.  Take my service for example https://www.seocheckout.com/Articl...out-staff-member

I have my pricing lower because I just started selling last month, but I plan on increasing it after I get 50 clients so I can make more per article.  Right now it is priced at $22 per article, not including add-ons, and I net around $14 after Seocheckout gets it's cut.  That seems like a good amount of money per order, and I'm sure you're thinking "Why would he increase the price?!?!?!" and that's because I'm actually underselling myself in the beginning, but I won't be for long.  I'm getting my initial sales and reviews, then I'll be increasing my prices a bit in order to keep me in line with my normal pricing.

Don't oversell yourself
A lot of people think they want to do 1,000 orders for $10,000 and then you have the other side of the spectrum where people want to do 100 orders for $10,000.  If you don't have the skills and reviews, you can't really sell your services for a premium just yet.  When people come to your service and see your pricing is twice as high as your competitors, they will wonder why you don't have any sales.  They will have to base their assumption of your service solely on what your service description says and not the reviews or recommendations from your previous clients.

If you already have the reviews and recommendations, you still can't skyrocket your pricing because you'll need to stay near the averages of your competitors.  Now, if you're the best of the best within your category, you can easily sell your services for more than anyone else, but you'll want to stay near the top priced seller to still be competitive.  If the most expensive service in your category sells for $40 and you sell yours for $150, you won't get many people purchasing from you because that's a pretty big gap.  Now if your competitor is selling for $150 and you're selling for $115, you will likely get some high-quality buyers who don't mind the $40 jump.  Again, you will need to build up your authority on the platform by getting a bunch of initial reviews and recommendations, so you should get to work on that How to price your SEO, writing, or web design services the right way

In Conclusion
You need to know what you're worth, but you also need to know how to get your initial sales in order to build up your presence and authority on the platform you're selling on.  No one will take a gamble on someone who is a new seller, they want to know others have purchased from you and loved everything you did before they decide to make their own purchase.  You can't undersell yourself, or oversell yourself because you will be making less money than you should in both cases.  Underselling yourself means you won't make as much per order and overselling yourself means you won't get as many orders because people won't want to bridge the gap in pricing.

Great points made. I think one of the important things to remember when selling freelancer services is that pricing is based on amount of work as well. Your skills may be elite or close to it, but the amount of labor, research or work in general put into a job also counts towards the price. Something writers and graphic designers should really keep in mind. Another good point to mention is never accept offers from customers who want you to add on a service you don't provide to their original order. For example, if my service is plainly stated as 'writing a bio for your company', don't ask me to also design your entire website for you after you've only paid me for the BIO. While I could design a site for you if I chose to do so, that would have to be a separate transaction. Not a 'throw in' on a writing job.

Generally speaking, pricing should be based on
your skills and expertise
your experience
amount of work you have to do
how much your competitors are charging.
If you are in high demand, you can set your fees very high. If you do not have any jobs at your hands, you will have to attract customers by charing low.

True. Especially in the sense of work you have to do and what the market looks like. People also apply this method to selling products online also. The market dictates the overall price you can sell an item at.

great article to read. I was planning to sell my service for drawing cartoons at $3 here but since I am at Level 1, can't do that. The minimum price is $10 but I doubt anyone would want to pay that price. So, I was thinking of offering additional free service instead, what do you think?

Absolutely way to go for both beginners and old workers.First, finds out your worth and measure it up with your competition.Try to sell at a fair market price, don't undersell or over sell yourself to bring in buyers and try to charge reasonable price.

As the saying goes, each man has his price. In freelancing, that's also the rule of thumb. In the call center business, the majority of agents hired are from the Philippines and India maybe because their pricing is way below the cost of agents in the US and Europe. That's also true in freelancing, some writers will price themselves so low not to outbox the competition but it's the amount that is fair to them because they have a lower standard of living. In one topic, the $3 article was an example which is very low. But I said that over here, that $3 can buy me a meal. For my pricing, I would stick to my own standard vis-a-vis the standard of living here.

Some good points. I started with 5$ for most of my services. And then decided to increase them. But between that time people were literally taking advantage of me. You can see that some articles are lot easier to write. So I have branched out to design and earning some decent income in due process. I am sure that in near future it's possible to get more conversion done for the design and the writing projects.

I think that is a thing that most people do, to be fair. When you first start out, you just won't have an idea of what the perfect price to charge is so you will either end up charging a lot or not charging enough from your clients. But I guess charging less can be a benefit because it can help you build up clients and show why you are great.

SEO is mysterious. You can charge low and high. Most of the low cost services are not much worth it. I personally don't find much use for the low cost services with tons of backlinks and stuff. So that's something I'd avoid for sure. I don't know how fiverr guys do it. But it seems like it takes time on that for managing the stuff.

Like you said, freelancing sites and having your own site is totally different. You may get sales on your site for a high price but you would be wrong to think you will get the same amount of sales through a freelancing site like Seocheckout for that same price. Prices on freelancing sites are a lot more competitive and freelancers tend to try to undercut others on the site so you will have to charge a much more competitive price.

Pricing your SEO, Writing or Web design services is quite simple. You just have to compare prices listed by other sellers who have been in the industry for some time. Compare and contrast between prices and try to lower your own price and make sure to deliver the best quality so as to win the market in no time. If your prices are lower than that of most others, you will sell faster than them provided you keep up your quality.

As usual you make some great points Razzy you have to know how to price your services. I think that you must be in the ballpark in terms of the overall price point. As you said you can not oversell or undersell yourself. It is important.

I price my service based on my skills, knowledge, and experience. When I am commissioned to write, I want at least 1 cent for a word for a general article. For SEO article, I will charge 2 cents per word. I have been writing in print since 2000 and for the online platform since 2010.
For SEO, work I will always price just about 50 percent of my competitor. I have less experience as an SEO expert and I will always set the price low.

The costing of your service is one problem that freelancers are now facing. Maybe the clients have their own estimates that when it comes to the negotiating table the freelancer is always on the receiving end of the bargain that the price for his work is discounted by force of the situation. We have to admit that freelancers are many who are fighting for a few jobs so that the law of supply and demand creates a bleak atmosphere for freelancing earnings.

That's a great article. You can't charge a high price when you are a beginner. Postive reviews will encourage others to hire you and in the long run, you can increase your price. You also need to consider how much the top writers are charging. This will give you an idea of how much you need to charge. If someone is pleased with your work then they will continue to do business with you.
