Why everyone should have their own website up and running

This day in age, everyone is getting on social media to post something that they are excited to share.  Of course, you have those people who just share everything like the weather, they saw a blue car pass their house or the sun rose in the east and set in the west.... again.  This discussion will cover why everyone should have their own website up and running, even just a blog if that's what you want to do, in order to keep the world turning (not really).

Running your own website or blog can be extremely beneficial when you're trying to get a new job, you want to share images with friends and family or you're simply trying to make a new revenue stream so you don't have to worry about bills.

I usually encourage all of my friends and family to set up a blog or website of their own so they can become a presence online, other than their social media profiles.  There are many reasons for doing this, and here they are:

You don't own your social media profiles
Many people around the world, probably 99% of them, will say something along the lines of "My facebook profile" or "my profiles online" and they think that they own the few pages of content on the billion dollar websites, but they don't!

So many people put everything they can think of on their social media profiles and that usually comes back to bite them in the butt later on.  Some people will eventually "Delete" their profiles but all they are really doing is ghosting them.  They are not deleted because when the person does decide to come back, they just reactivate their account and BAM!!!!  all their photos and settings are back lol.

Not owning the site you publish all of your information on is like giving your credit cards to someone you don't know, but you trust at the same time.  You're giving away the rights for people to use your photos, and some people won't even ask while they use them.  To prevent this, you can always set up your own blog or website and have a privacy filter in order to give others access when you want.  But that's too much work and you don't care about your photos being used?  Well, you'll care when it does happen to you and someone tries to make a profile using your information lol.

You can land more jobs
More and more employers are going to social media to check up on their employees and potential hires to make sure they have a good team under their roof.  Having a team that is constantly partying and binge drinking, then coming into work, won't be a good thing because performance expectations will be high but the actual performance will be low due to hangovers and no one is motivated to get the job done because they want to go out at night.

A lot of applications now have a "website" field where people usually just input their Facebook profile URL.  Did you know you can actually set up a website that makes you look amazing and then add it to the "website" field?  Yup, you don't just have to add your social media profiles lol.  You can make the website portray you as a saint within your industry and the employer will definitely be calling you back Why everyone should have their own website up and running

Building a Brand
This is more for people who want to get into fashion, modeling, acting, etc.  If you have a headshot, you're the person this pertains to.

Building a brand around yourself is no easy thing to do.  Sure, you can build profiles on other websites that will eventually help you out along the way, or you could build your own website that focuses on everything you've ever done in your industry.  Think of this as a sort of resume online, but with fancy pictures to entice someone to give you a call for your next big movie roll Why everyone should have their own website up and running

Protect Your Name Online
This is why I usually encourage everyone to build a website for themselves, to protect their own name online.  I've searched up my own name and couldn't find anything dirty because I control the domains associated with my name!   lol Why everyone should have their own website up and running

Protecting your name online isn't just going to websites and asking them to remove a page about you, even though that's part of online reputation management.  You will need to take it a step further, and this might be all you need and set up a website with the domain name being your actual name.  If you have a shortened name like "Tom" while your legal name is "Thomas" you might want to pick up the domains Tom(LastName).com and Thomas(LastName).com just to be safe.  You can always redirect one of them to the other and build one website instead of two Why everyone should have their own website up and running

In Conclusion
These are just a few reasons people should be running a website for themselves.  Either to protect your own name, to increase your callbacks or to land a specific job looking fancier than someone who adds their facebook profile URL to a job application.  You never know how far a single website can take you in terms of being successful in life, so why not try it out?  Don't worry about pricing either, you can start super basic and have a free Wordpress theme on a $6 a month hosting plan if you wanted to lol

Having a personal website is creating a solid foundation for a business. Making money really does not exist without creating a website first. Having your own website up and running is a certain step to securing financial freedom online. Every money making skill you may acquire is built on the website. You can then be making money even while sleeping. Although setting up a website entails making it search engine friendly by regularly performing all necessary SEO tasks, once this is done, there is no cause for alarm. Once traffic potential is built for the website and excellent locations are targeted for all campaigns, the income will be unlimited.

I am an online seller and I don't have my website yet. I actually sell my products on other platforms. My plan is to set up my own eCommerce website by next year. I will hire a professional for that. The main reason behind that is mainly because my customer base has been increasing. I now want to have something of my own. I was to differentiate my business from others. Running a business is not the least easy. You have to take many risks and also plan many things.

We have the same plan but I cannot say if I can create my own website next year. Based on what I had learned in this site when you are engaged in e-commerce is that you can do better business if you have an e-commerce site that can also earn if it is monetized. It is like shooting 2 birds with one bullet because your clients can see everything they need to see about your business.

I have learned that it can be used as a good networking tool. And many people are making use of those ideas and making the most out of it. So depending on how the website based work can be done. I am sure the linkedin type of profiles are not even needed for the networking. Instead the website alone can be more than good enough for the task. That's what I have learned in this case as well. It's good to have website for that reason.

I have my site that I profiled my thoughts and views and of course, people reckon with my views on my site more than on any other platform I might have.Having your site help one in branding and rebranding. You put your business or stuff out there through your site Because it your personal space, you can tweak or customize your personality to suit what you really want the public to know and this will help both your personality and brand.

I think anyone who is legitimately in business should have their own personal website. But needling granny to set up her own blog probably isn't necessary unless she's in the business of selling cakes, pies or recipes.

True. Freelancers can skip the website. But most of the people who are trying to run the business need to have the online website. And they can and for sure make use of the pages on social media too. So I think website and the social media pages are required. One has to definitely spend the time and money into this type of the services. That can surely bring more leads. And that's how the business can flourish online.

I think if you freelance, you should have a website because it can help you get more clients. The buyer would see the website and think that you're the real deal, and won't be wasting their time. Once I started my little online business, the trust factor grew exponentially. Definitely a plus in the world of the freelancing/ online work world.

I think the need for the website is minimzed on the platforms like ionicware and the fiverr and other sites. So it's possible to have same result as with or without the website. So that's something we have to chekc out with the online platforms. Some of the time we can get the clients without the need for the website. I think having website opens more door eventually.

I really appreciate your point here about not owning the info which we post on the social media sites of others or of other organizations. A lot of my friends have actually dropped social media sites because they finally realized that whatever they posted there was no longer under their sole ownership. I also agree that not everyone needs a website, but if you are promoting your own business or original content, it is just a smart thing to do, and a professional thing to do. Also, if I am posting something to generate a discussion, I would rather do it on my own site and with my own format instead of using facebook, or a similar social media platform, to explore the discussion.

I firmly believe everyone should have their own website, and I also believe that everyone should learn at least 1 programming language. Whether it be HTML/CSS (which i personally don't call them programmnig languages but newbies would, so i am using the 2 terms), or even javascript.

People that don't have their own website need to realize the power of a website. One website could help your living situation, it could be a fun hobby for you. You will learn a lot about the technology of the internet itself. You will learn about money, audiences, hosting, and many other things.

Some people do not want to have a website because they believe that owning a website either costs too much (they seem to think it's hundreds to thousands of dollars), or they are not educated in anything about tech. My mother wanted her own website apart from forums, and didnt want to actually follow through with it because she believed that it would cost way too much money and she wasn't very tech-savvy. However, i kept reassuring her that it is not costly, but relatively cheap, and you do not have to be a rocket scientist to operate one. But years down the road, and there is still no website..

I believe certain mindsets like this need to change. It's a very awesome thing to have your own website. So many positive things will come out of it that you don't even know about! So if you're thinking about running a website, please do! It's really NOT that hard.

Your point about landing jobs is one of the best. With a website, you can build a portfolio especially if you are a designer or in the photography industry. You can showcase your work and show off the work that you have done for your present clients which can help bring in more jobs. It can also help you land more jobs because potential employees will be happy with the work you have done already.

Whether or not people should have their own website seems more subjective than some let on. I mean, some people are into that and some aren't. However, though, I think both types should have social media stuff going on as a 2nd option. It's simply too valuable a source of traffic, publicity, and SEO nowadays.

I disagree. I don't have my own website but I earn okay. Even I' m working on other sites, fine by me as long I get paid.

If you are hardcore online like selling products or services, or you are a genius writer, owning a website is worthwhile.

I'm contented using Facebook and other social platforms, websites of other people to advertise, look for stuff and share my opinions.

Reason #2 You can land more jobs is what I'm also telling to my students in information technology why it is a great advantage if they could create their own website. It will serve as a portfolio once they apply in a company or even if they chose to work as a freelancer.

That is definitely true. Especially if you're a programmer, or other freelancer with actual services to offer. You can increase your chance being hired by a good company with the exposure of your own website. This hasn't really happened to me, but I have been on a few freelancer websites that basically said something along the lines of them not taking any new clients because they were offered a position at X company. When I hear that it makes me proud, however sometimes freelancers just want to freelance and have to take those job offers because they have no other choice.

Completely agree on this one. Everyone should have own website. And specially i agree about "You don't own your social media profiles" LoLthat's so true but yet most of the people treat these profiles like they own it without thinking that they can vanish any time... Having own website is good idea, specially to get more business. Have your CV online, portfolio, share fun, memories or experience... Better then have only social media profiles, but instead sharing posts directly on social media, share your blog posts, photos or anything else TO social media... *****

I have a handful of websites and blogs. However, I did not have a personal website until recently. I do have a personal blog where I publish personal stories, however, I did not have a personal website, where I could promote my products and services until recently. Sometime I was offered a dot info domain for 60 cents. I registered a domain with my name vinaya ghimire. Later I thought a dot come will be more valuable and I registered dot come with my name. Now I have redirected my dot com domain to dot info.

I also think it is a good idea to have a personal website. This is a branding exercise. Think about your favorite celebrities. A few of mine are Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Kerry Washington. If you look for them on Google, they are lots of stories about them.Say, you wanted to hire one of them for an event, where would you start? They all have personal websites with information about what they have done in terms of jobs and how to get in contact with their representatives. That's the same thing anyone who is looking for work should do.

I have one blog/forum and I have 3 more blogs and one of them is a personal website. And I do agree everyone should have a website if you're going to be doing any kind of interaction on the internet. And I feel like families should preserve their online name with a blog. And having your own family blog will give future generation a timeline to look up the family history!

Having a personal website or blog is a very recommended idea. I have two websites and two blogs too. But I still can't figure out how owning a site will help in curbing down people from regularly posting on social media to likes of the instance made at the beginning of your post.

To run a successful website and blog, social media must come into play. Sites these days are even automated with every single post. In the long run, those annoying personal post made on social media by people will eventually get to social media via automation when everyone gets their own website or blog.

I understand that if you have a business that is growing and you are dependent on social media for your profile, you probably need to have your own website. What happens if the social media platform would suspend your account? How would you communicate with your clients? Your business will definitely suffer. Take note that in social media, your account can always be compromised by a simple report of complaint. If you have a website for your business, you own that so there is no problem when it comes to integrity and regularity of the business.
