Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

A lot of stay at home moms and dads look to working online because they want to make some extra cash for their families while their spouse is at work.  It's understandable that they want to make some extra cash because every dollar helps pay bills, put food on the table or pay for a trip to Disney Land lol.  Some people think that working from home and having kids is impossible, but it's not.  I do it everyday and I make a full time income each year for the last few years.  Of course my situation is a little different because I had been doing this type of work for a while now, but you can do it too if you have kids and want to make money from home Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

Of course there are two different types of work from home adults.  There are the ones who have kids that are in school and they can work while the child is away learning and there is the adult who has an infant who needs to be attended to for a good amount of the day or night.  Each has it's own difficulties and I will try to touch on both of them so this discussion can help as many people as possible Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

So let's get started!

Time Management
This is a pretty obvious one, but it definitely needs to be first on the list.  You will need to get good at your time management and try not to slack off as much as possible.  The more you slack off or procrastinate, the less you will get done during the day.

Parents with kids in School - For these people, you will definitely need to get work done while your child is in school.  These times vary depending on your region or school, but normally it's around 8:30am to 2:30pm from what I know.  So with this schedule you can get roughly 5 hours of work done.  Some of you are saying "Well, I did the math and that's a 6 hour time frame!"  I can do math too and I know it's 6 hours, but you want to factor in 30 minute gaps at the beginning and end so you can get everything ready to go in the morning and so you have time to get to the child's school before they get out if you're the one picking them up.   If they take the buss home from school that's just extra time for you to make money from home Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

Parents with toddlers - The parents in this situation won't have as much free time because they will have to pay attention to their child most of the day.  This doesn't mean that you can't get work done!  You won't get as much done, but you can still do some stuff while your spouse is away (that is if you're still with your spouse).  Even if you are able to set up a time sheet for you to work on later when there is another adult to monitor your child, that's good enough!

Working Late
When it comes to working from home, a lot of the times you will notice that you're working late after everyone goes to bed.  I actually love working late because I don't have any distractions.  My kids are asleep and my friends know I won't hang out with them during the week if it's a school day, so I don't get random texts until after 2am when they're leaving the bars lol.

Working late will cut into your morning, and you'll likely need to take an hour or two nap during the day when your kid is at school.  Hopefully your infant can sleep through the night and takes some naps during the day, which is when I would suggest you nap too!  Sleep when your kid is asleep, and you'll be a happier person.

The only downside to this is that you might not get as much housework done because of your work and nap schedules.

Making Time For Family
Now I can't stress this enough.  When I started dating my girlfriend she had a kid already, yes I'm the step dad Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done and I had to start working in "family time" to my routine since we didn't live together yet.  After we moved in I had to alter my work methods drastically because my daughter was now in kindergarten.  I work when she's at school and sprinkle in work when I can after she gets out.  I'm lucky that she has friends on the same street as us and she can just go over there when she wants, but not everyone will be in that situation.

When you make family time, it's not just sitting on the couch and watching an episode of your favorite TV show.  You need to get out of the house at least once a week and do something fun with your kid.  You don't have all the time in the world to do fun things with them, so take advantage of working from home and get the hell out of the house lol Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

Knowing What You Can Get Done
This is a big one, and a lot of people don't think to do this.  You need to know what you can get done in the time frames you have.  If your kid is taking a nap you won't be able to redesign an entire website, or even customize a WordPress theme.  You will have an estimated time frame and you need to work on things you know you can get done.  If you think you have 30 minutes to get some work done, write up some content for your website or clients, just figure out what takes the least amount of time and knock it out first.  The longer your time slots, the more difficult tasks you can jam in there because they will usually take longer to finish up.

Bringing In Some Help
I've been working online for so long that I have a decent down line of people who can help me out when I'm in a bind.  Your list of people will grow over time, so don't worry if you don't have anyone right now.  The way I built my list of helpers was to pay them for something I needed done and over time they became friends who would help out.  I now have a web designer and programmer who I'm partnered up with on a website design company, even though I have no clue how to program a line of code lmao Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

I bring people in to alleviate my work load, which helps me focus on other tasks or just take a break to go get my kid from school.  If you can do this well enough, and build up enough quality relationships, you can just be the middle man and handle the money while others do the work and you get the credit Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

In Conclusion:
You can work from home even if you have kids.  You might not get as much house work done, but there are ways to manage that as well.  You can bring people in to help you out, which can increase your sales due to you being able to focus on other things like bringing in traffic or you can take that time to get some work done around the house.  If you have an infant you will likely have a sporadic work schedule while at home, but it's still possible.

Of course, it can be done. I believe anything you truly put your mind to can be done and achieved. It might not be easy especially at the start since you have to learn to manage working and kids. Both can be stressful but when you get that "formula" down of how to balance and coordinate yourself, it is much easier. I have a friend that works from home and has two toddlers. She's a proof that it is completely possible. If parents follow your tips they will have a much easier time adjusting Working from home and having to raise kids is difficult, but can be done

I am sure that doing this is not an easy task at all! Kids have a lot of needs, and they can be unpredictable, so you have to be able to be flexible as you work with the kid or kids at home. I think this would just come with practice, and like you said, with developing a system or pattern which works and then sticking to that as much as possible. However, I have known may people to be very successful at this, and I do believe it is achievable; it will be tough, of course, but it IS achievable.

There is a saying that you are the king in your home and you are right that the workload can be done if you have the right discretion and priorities of things. The children give us an impression of disturbance but think about the joy that your children can give you. I have pets who bark incessantly when there is someone on our gate and the noise was deafening. But I can be patient with them because I love my dogs.

I applaud you for the suggestions on how to manage both working and training the kids. What I have come to realize that most parents simply lack the virtue of time management which makes it tough for them to combine both managing their homes as well as taking proper notice of their official duties. If those parents can plan their time well, then I don't see anything wrong in working at a firm and managing the home.

I think the best thing to do is to create shifts for you and your partner. That way, whilst your partner is working at their workplace, you will have to look after your toddler and you can relax a bit as well if you get the chance. But then when your partner comes home, you can then work online or even do a late night shift at a business. And during that time, your partner can look after your toddler.

This is a great idea, but it revolves around having a decent and available partner as well! I know a lot of single moms, and some single dads, who do not have a partner to help, so this does make it significantly tougher. However, if you do have the option to rotate shifts like this, so to speak, that would be some awesome teamwork and also testament to what a strong relationship you have with your partner.

I know a lot of college female friends who are managing the work and the kids. So this is definitely doable. You can see that raising kids is one thing that requires dedicated time. And if one can spend the time right way they can surely get things in proper order. I personally think that when working from home. One has to set aside some time for both family and the work. So that is something one has to deal with while working. On that point I'd say taking some time off and teaching kids not to disturb the parents when working is the thing worth thinking about as well.

When I completed my education, I had two choices: get a regular job, or freelance. I chose the later. I have been freelancing since 2007. It has been 10 years, and I have not regretted my decision even though I am not making as much as my friends are making in regular jobs. My freelancing job ran into trouble when I got married. There were lots of distraction. Since I was working from home, everyone thought I was free. Now that I have a child, I am worried about how to continue freelancing. My wife has a job, when she is away, I will have to take care of my child. I will have to balance my working schedule and parenting.

I hope you get better at doing your freelancing duties. It is not always easy to combine family and working, but one thing is that you can't let go of the latter since it is by working that you earn income for taking care of the family. I wish you the very best in your endeavors.

Thanks.
Distractions are common when you are working from home. Working from home is still not understood as a "job" in my home country. Since I am home all day long, people think I am free. It is difficult to teach people that just like the regular job, I also have working hours and do not want to get disturbed.

I think it is very possible to find a balance in working from home while taking care of children. I have a friend who is doing this right now, and with a brand new baby. She works online and through her phone in customer service for a large company, and she does it all from her bedroom. The baby can be fussy at times, but my friend seems to be handling this all quite well while making some pretty good money on top of it. I know this is not easy, and my ex-wife tried it and had a hard time of it, so it is also not for everyone, but with the right plan, a sense of compromise, and help from others, I think this venture is entirely doable.

It is not easy, but with adequate time management, everything can fit in. I have someone, my aunt, that just delivered a baby and she is a full time online freelancer and she hasn't complained since then, so I'm of the opinion that it is quite possible for such to take place.

I think great time management is the key when it comes to working at home with kids. There are a lot of people who do it whether they are working for themselves or for an employer. It is simply one of the ways that you can lead a satisfying life and have time to spend with your kids as well as your work.

It can be done but it is not easy task you have to manage your time toyour kids, household chores and you job. You must have plan which and what to do
in everyday task. I’m also working home base and it is really hard to manage my time but I like
it and eventually I enjoy it because I can
take care of my child while working at home. Perseverance and adjusting your
time and self determination is the key.

Working at home seems like something easy for most of people, but it's actually very complicated, sometimes more than we can imagine (and raising children is just one more complication, a big one to be honest).

One of the coolest sides to this kind of work is the freedom of people to do their own work hours.

Time management is it. In whatever endeavor you do, time management is the key to avoid work overload and not to miss deadlines. Mismanaged time can result in delays that can greatly affect the quality of your work. In working at home, it's not only time management but also getting focus in what you do. Unlike working in the office, working at home has many distractions so you need a technique on how to concentrate on what you are working on.

I have to totally agree with you here--no venture you embark upon will work unless you manage your time effectively and efficiently. Of course, this takes a good deal of discipline to do, but I think, like you are saying, that it is crucial. Not managing your time can result in many lost opportunities, and no one "has time" for that!

Time management is something I have to learn. As a person working from home, it is difficult to manage home time and work time. It is very common to witness people knocking your door when you are working. When people see be on computer, they tend to believe that I am either watching youtube or checking facebook. However, what they do not realize that when I am on youtube, I am learning new skills and when I am on facebook I am marketing my products and services.

I believe that it can be done but it may be difficult if you have a toddler to tend to while you are working. Some infants will demand a great deal of attention and this could be somewhat frustrsting when you are trying to complete a certain amount of tasks to enable your activities are viable. In this case, you may have to adjust to doing some late night work so that you may be free of hassle of having to be frequeny attending to the child. When it comes to older children, you would be able to schedule most of the activity when they are in school. When you are working on the computer, it is advised that you should take a break at intervals to avoid injury and these breaks could be incorported into some family time as much as possible.

This is so true. I would assume that the younger the child is, the more maintenance and time the child would require. Also, with unexpected feedings and diaper changes, it would be hard to stay on task while watching a baby and freelancing at home. I know several people who have done it, but they have said it was a tough time for them to juggle so many things at once. I bet they slept really good at night, every night, from exhaustion though!

I have a few relatives who work from home and do retail online and they have kids. It does seem tough and I do hear some complaints from them from time to time, such as being bothered while they are working. I don't think they are able to manage their time as much since they pretty much need to be on call throughout the day as customers send in messages asking about items. I think they have just gotten used to it and have grown to get settled into a routine that is unique to them even if it seems irregular to everyone else on the outside, it works for them.

I will grant you that it can be difficult working from home, especially with pre-school or homeschooled kids. But not impossible. I work at home now, but never had to work from home when our children were younger. But my husband did opt to work from home. It worked out for us because there was never a concern about the kind of care our children were receiving, which was always our main concern when taking our babysitters or daycare. As for time management? It is key and my husband had it down to a science. No surprise it's Number 1 on your list. If you can't manage your time effectively, it will be very difficult to do the other things on your list.

Those are some great suggestions. I work as a freelancer online and I make a decent amount of money each month. In fact I left my full time job to work at home for many reasons. The first thing is that I earn more online. Secondly, I can work at my own pace and I can get more work done. I can also spend more time with my family. At times if I can't work during the day then I catch up at night or I try to wake up earlier in the morning. I have been doing this for some years and I can say that I love my life as a freelancer. I think that working online is a really good opportunity for stay at home moms to make some money. It is not difficult. All you have to do is plan your time.

yes it can be done, I'm doing it. It all depends on the type of work you do at home. Also for me it helps to have a wife who understands what it's like to work from home. I work from home, and my wife now does the ride share, we both have the flexibility, and that's what makes this type of work worth the time. Work from home is changing and the wages are getting better. Try working from home and home schooling 3 boys, that's a hard job but we love doing it!
