5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

There are roughly 2.5 billion people using social media in some way shape or form.  Now that doesn't mean that each of them has a Facebook profile, twitter account, pinterest board, LinkedIn profile, etc.  It just means that they are on social media, on at least one platform.  With the increase from year to year, it's predicted that there will be closer to 3 billion people using social media on a regular basis, so this means that you should be getting the ball rolling on your social media marketing... If you haven't already 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

Social media is actually a powerful tool that will help bring in customers.  You will be able to connect with them on a personal level and they love that.  You can contact them directly, in real time, as soon as they comment on something.  This will increase the chances of turning them into a customer as well as all the lurkers watching your conversation 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

There have been plenty of brands that have become successful due to social media marketing.  There have also been plenty of companies that wasted plenty of money on social media marketing because they didn't do it right.  Don't be one of the companies that fail at converting social media users into your own buyers.  Avoid the 5 mistakes below to help you along your way 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

1. You're committed to too many social media platforms
Now you may be thinking "Wouldn't it be better to target more platforms?" and it's actually not.  It's not the best idea because you'll be stretching yourself too thin while also having to do other things for your business, like run it lol.  Now if you can bust your butt on a few social media platforms so that you can make enough money to hire someone to only do social media management, then that is when you expand into other platforms.  Until then, focus on your top 3 and be the best you can be on them 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

2. You're neglecting your loyal followers
So many times you will notice that a business will get on a social media platform and get it's first wave of followers.  This is great, but only a few will be loyal.  These loyal followers need to be treated like they're an employee because they could be doing a lot for you and you don't even recognize it.  Watch for who's commenting, who's sharing, who's answering other peoples questions before you can get to them, etc.

The loyal people will be the ones who purchased from you and loved your work or product so much that they will come back to your page numerous times to like, comment, respond to others and even defend you when someone has something negative to say about you.  Treat your loyal following like they're employees and security guards at the same time, and they will show their loyalty by purchasing and referring others to your website or business 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

3. Having the same voice as other brands
No one wants to see a website act just like a big brand in the same niche.  It's like you're the little annoying brother of the big successful sibling in the family and you want to be just like them.  People will see this and instantly go with the big company who has their own voice.

You will need to be yourself because people will see this as unique and that you're paving your own way to success.  No one has 10 friends who all act the exact same and do the same thing, they have various friends who get along with each other, and that's what you need to be like.  Have your own personality and voice in order to be your own big brand 5 social media mistakes that could be hurting your business

4. Ignoring all of the data that is right in front of you!
Ignoring the data that is in front of you is like blindly throwing money in the air and hoping you profit from it somehow lol.  One of your main jobs should be sifting through the mounds of data in order to increase your conversions, bring in more traffic, make your website more user friendly, make your social media profiles more inviting, etc.

If you're not sifting through all of this data, you're already falling behind the big corporations who are.  You have access to the same social media tools that they do, so use them already!

5. Not really understanding your target audience.
This really annoys me because people will come to me and say "My business snapchat account isn't selling record albums as much as I would like!" and I say "No Sh*t!  Snapchat is full of kids and people who are more modern who don't want a record album!"

Figure out what your target audience is and then match it with the right social media platform.  If you don't know how to do this, stick with Facebook since it's a melting pot of all ages, cultures and hobbies.

In Conclusion:
These are 5 things you need to focus on when you want to be more successful when it comes to social media management.  If you're committing any of these social media crimes, you need to stop before you do too much damage and it can't be fixed.

Your number two point is spot on. One must always nurture their initial and loyal clients! I think that this is crucial. A loyal client base is a word of mouth and associative connection to even more clients and customers. These people are your core listeners, and the more you please and inspire them, the more they will be apt to recruit other followers for your sites because they are happy with what you are doing.

So true! Personally, I feel somehow abandoned when I stopped getting the usual attention as a client. The connection with the customers, is one of the strongest sides of your business. A happy customer/client, for sure will bring more customers to follow you, specially if they feel well attended.

Thanks for your response here, and I think we have both touched upon something. I too realize it and feel weird when suddenly I was not paid attention to anymore by a person online when it comes to business. It is important to remember that clients and customers do realize and recognize this type of thing.

You're very welcome friend, and totally agree with you. I've had very bad experiences dealing with sellers that don't pay attention or stop having interaction with me. In that case, it may look even suspicious and I rather cancel the transaction. Unfortunately I also stop recommending that seller, no one wants to be treated like that or want a friend to suffer the same disappointment.

True! There need to be certain level of respect between individuals when doing business. Establishing this rapport leads to better business and better networking in the future, and so people should always treat each other with courtesy and candor. It is so easy nowadays to just send a quick email or text and communicate, so there really is no excuse to leave someone suspicious or wondering what happened.

I think we also need to concentrate on #1. These days there are so many social media sites and most of us are jumping on the wagon. We seem to book a spot on every social media sites that we discover. Having accounts in too many social media sites is not much important, however, being active is. If you cannot remain active, there is no sense of being on various sites.

This is so true. I find that my workload is so extensive that I can only handle a few of these sites at the same time if I am going to handle them properly at all with any quality control. If you have too many plates spinning, as the saying goes, eventually you will not be able to keep up with the pace you have set for yourself, and some of those plates are going to fall from their perches and shatter. So far, I just focus primarily on Facebook and Twitter--I am getting good traffic from doing so, and they give me plenty of work to do in order to keep up.

Two is always better than one. Therefore, sharing on two social media sites is always better than sharing on one social media site. However, conversion is more important than sharing. If your social media posts, do not get engagements, there will be no social signals or traffic. Therefore, you should concentrate on getting engagements. If you are on a few sites, you can focus on maximizing your social media promotion.

That's the way I was looking at it as well. I am more of a quality than quantity person, myself. In other words, if I use these two sites to their maximum, then that would be better than just half-way using several sites, if that makes any sense. Using two sites gives me the ability to really stay on top of things and to keep up with emails, posts, updates, and correspondences.

Another thing to consider while sharing on social media is target audience. If your target audience is people under the age of 29 years, it is more profitable to market on Instagram rather than facebook. If your target audience is women, marketing on Pinterest is more beneficial than sharing on Twitter. You need to check the social media audience to get most from your marketing.

Loyal clients are always equivalent to 2 new clients because loyal clients have the staying power when it comes to purchases whether it is a product or service that you are selling. Taking care of loyal clients should be extra special to give them the idea that they are important to you. The more you pamper the client, the more they will come back so it is imperative that pampering should be accorded all the clients.

It's true that social media is a very wild field and offers many opportunities in many aspects if you know how to take advantage of them.

Those 5 items you've listed make it clear that if you don't know how to deal with them, instead of helping you, they'll further distract you and complicate things.

Exactly. It is a wonder, if you ask me, how we all stay dedicated and focused with our freelancing work with all of the distractions which the online world has to offer. Social media is a double-edged sword, to be sure, and it can lead you down many rabbit and fox holes if you are not careful. You might start off using it for the best intentions and suddenly end up losing hours of your time before you even know it!

Very well said.

It's amazing how much we can distract ourselves when we start using any social media, it seems they have some kind of spell that goes beyond our control. Even if we train not to fall into these temptations, at one time or another we always have some kind of relapse.

Loyal followers form the backbone of your social media campaign. Since they are loyal to you so you should also be loyal to them. Give them what they want. Most followers are after your interesting posts so don't focus much on the promotion of your product. For the sake of your loyal followers, regularly post items that are interesting to them.

Well said.

Loyalty to both sides is of the utmost importance because a faithful base means a solid structure at any time of the year (I mean... you can count on them and they can count on you).

This is very important for something that usually oscillates a lot at all times.

I think that the biggest mistake out of the ones you have listed is definitely the fact that so many people simply struggle to find and understand their target audience. They often target the wrong people and waste a lot of time and effort. Some even buy the ads on the social media platforms and then don't know why they didn't get any traffic increase. Analyze the data and always make sure that you are talking to the "right" people.

I think this is so true. I have had a lot of difficulty getting traffic to click on my ads, and I think that it is because Adsense, at times, displays ads which do not relate to my blog and site content, so I have t constantly police this. I am sure there is a way to fix this permanently, but I am still very new to using ads, so I am still learning. For example, I host a poetry thread/journal blog. I connected Adsense to it, and sometimes it will advertise adult dating sites right there on the page with a really serious writer and his or her poem. This is not good, lol. So, when I see this happen, I go in and ban that ad and check my settings. It's a bit labor-intensive.

What you are saying makes a lot of sense. I mean it all comes back to knowing who your audience is. Maybe the snapchat example would work if you were selling a new kind of fidget spinner or something, but I don't think you are going to find an older audience on there like you have mentioned.

Neglecting the loyal followers can be as frustrating to those members that they might turn against the product campaign. So, it is necessary that online markets spot out those loyal members and show appreciation.

All really good points and I definitely 100% agree on all of them. It's definitely important to focus on quality over quantity at first, at least in terms of the content you're putting out on social media. Well thought out and strategic posts are certainly going to go over far better than short, poorly planned content which you might be inclined to do if you're stretched out too thin. Then of course there is the whole communication aspect between you and your followers. Once you've targeted the right community and attracted a following, communicating with your followers is key to keeping the community alive. Not to mention loyal, happy followers will attract others and in some sense do your work for you.

Your points are well taken. The problem with many of us is that we have not fully grasped the potential of social media and some of us older folks have been influenced by the younger generation to be involved in sites that will not be very meaningful to us.
Some of us may need to have lessons in the effective utilzation of the sites that would be more valuable to our business.

I really agree with you here. I tend to think that I do "okay" using my social media, but I would really like for a successful online guru of social media strategies to come and give me a crash-course in these endeavors. I feel that I am not reaching my full potential on the social media front, but, then again, so far I am only using facebook and Twitter on a regular basis to promote. I have been contemplating Instagram for months, but I have just not gotten around to those quite yet.

Those are some very good points. Some people have been telling me to join all the social media sites to advertise my products but however I prefer to concentrate on only specific sites where I am sure I can reach more people. I have been more successful on Facebook than any other social media sites. I don't really have enough money to hire a social media manager now but maybe I may consider this in the future.
I totally agree that you must respond to all your queries and comments. The customers will feel that you care for them and will be interested in doing business with you.

sadly, I am already doing some of these mistakes. For instance, I have not properly identified my target audience. I have a lingerie website, I think my target audience is women between the ages of 18-50. However, not only women buy lingerie. I recently did a research and discovered when men are buying gifts for their women, their first choice is lingerie. I also have a health blog. Health is a primary concern for everyone. However, I don't know yet who could be actually benefiting from my health articles and what is my target audience.

I personally look at the official social media pages of the brands/products that I want to buy. The more aesthetically pleasing the page is, the more likely I would want to buy the product. Most of the brands I know has both Facebook and Instagram accounts that are used to let the audience know what kind of products they are using. I believe that can be a factor that will up their sales but I also have encountered some brands that are just not displaying their best in social media platforms which I think will be a big factor in the number of sales that they have.

I think that I also most likely to be inclined to purchase from attractive websites more than the ones that look shabby, boring, or just a bit plain. This could be misleading, though, because a business might be really savvy their online design, but their products and services might not be up to par. It would be like going out on a date with a physically beautiful person and then realizing after interacting that he or she is superficial and has no real substance to offer. Still, most sites that "look great" are cared for by people who also care for their customers and what they are selling to them. That's what I have found in my experience, anyway.
