GOOGLE CHROME - RAM EATER

I would guess that 90% of the members and users here in seocheckout are using Google Chrome as their website browser. I too am using Google Chrome up until, it made my laptop crawl! Seriously, I was always wondering what is making my computer slow down, specially when I am browsing the Internet. I have cleaned it a couple of times both hardware and software but still nothing!

Then I was so desperate for a remedy so by that time, I consulted Google itself! I know right? Oh the irony. GOOGLE CHROME - RAM EATER Until I found out the culprit! It was this fatty chubby potato after all! It has been eating all my memory (RAM) since the beginning. And the sad part is, even if the application is closed, some of it's cache are still in used which makes your computer/laptop run slow specially if you have 2 - 4gb of RAM.

GOOGLE CHROME - RAM EATER

After that, I have switched to Opera since it doesn't eat that much at works fast also and has some amazing features. The best thing about Opera is they don't collect any data by default and no random location autorun plug-ins like Chrome has.

Mind you, I am still using Google Chrome once in a while. But I don't open more than 3 tabs since each sessions since each tabs eats a lot of memory. I am not saying that Google Chrome is bad and all, it's still the number one browser in my opinion. It's just that it requires a lot of RAM and cpu threads to work properly and blazingly fast.

Chrome is slow on my computer too. My computer is 4 years old it still has a i5 3.0GHZ, 16GB of ram, geforce 730gt, 1tb hard drive and chrome bogs my computer down all the time. I am always deleting the cache at least once a week. Although like you said chrome is the number one browser it's is a resource hog and bloated in my opinion.

Very nice specs. Google Chrome would definitely love your RAMs specially by the number of memories that you have. So imagine if you are opening 5 tabs, your RAMs will be surely eaten along with your processing power. Now it won't really make your computer slow, but you would always feel the stutter hangs and lags from time to time.

Our desktop is almost 10 years old and is running on Windows XP. There are times that it is crawling and when we investigate it is always the Chrome that is the biggest user of memory. Yesterday I was about to shut down the desktop when I noticed the very slow reaction. True to my expectation, Chrome was eating a big chunk of the memory. It is odd because I had already exited from Chrome so what I did was to stop the Chrome in the task bar. That was an abnormal end but so what, I had killed the ram eater.

My computer is slow. I thought it was due to age, but Chrome is my primary browser so that could be why I suppose. Thanks for mentioning that. I think I might look into Opera. Everything I have now though is set up on Google, so it would require some moving things around. I just don't know alot about alternative browsers other than Firefox though.

I have not yet had any issues with slow movement with Google Chrome, but, then again, I am not doing anything heavy duty just yet with my RAM. I will look into Opera. I got really accustomed to and fond of Google Chrome a while back, so I have just stuck with it. I don't really like Firefox. Maybe Opera will be a great new alternative for me, and since I've been in these forums, your advice has always been solid, gale.

Hmm you probably have a faster machine. Probably more optimized for Google Chrome usage. But as far as I know, from most of the tech forums involving Google Chrome, it usually does slow devices who have RAMs lower than 4GB.

Yes try Opera. It works really well for me. Firefox, on the other hand, not so much. Thank you!

I honestly never had any issues with Chrome, ever. My current computer does have 8GB RAM but I have like 10+ tabs open at once while running other things and there are no problems. Even when I was using my old computer with only 4GB RAM, Chrome worked fine.

It's weird because if it's eating so much RAM I'd assume that it would do the same on your smartphones? Yet for me, Chrome web browser runs the smoothest and fastest on my phone.

On my tablet, Chrome is probably one of the worst browsers I have. It crashes all the time and if the page I'm loading has anything other than pictures and text it starts to lag hard especially when I start to type. My tablet runs just fine on any other app and I even play games on it without any problems at all. On my 8GB laptop though Chrome runs fine too. I even sometimes open so many tabs and windows and it rarely hangs.

You actually reminded me that Chrome runs bit weirdly on my tablet as well. But I forgot before since I rarely use it nowadays but it had Chrome pre-installed so I just automatically used it without thinking, haha.

The next time I use it I will definitely try another browser to see if there's any difference. My tablet has only like 1GB RAM or something.

I also have 8GB of RAM on my desktop and it doesn't slow it down. But on my laptop, I can't have multiple tabs open and at the same time, have another software open too. You won't notice it but if you check your process manager tab, you would see who is on the top.

Actually it does the same with smartphones. Maybe because of the updates and it's file size. They are all the same anyway. It's like they are ram eating machines which tends to also eat all of your device's threads and make it hot.

Well, I've known for a while that Google Chrome was a RAM and memory killer. From a consumers perspective, the interface itself is user-friendly and inviting. However, overall it slows down your PC or laptop. What I normally do is keep my browser history clear. This includes pre-login details, caches, etc. But this can only work to a minimum. Alternatively, what you can do is upgrade your RAM by taking it to a computer tech specialist if lack of RAM and memory is a real issue.

Just to give some information, Google Chrome is favored from a developers point of view because of the customizable options. Including the development of individual extensions within the browser itself. So it does provide a platform of creativity for developers to expand upon their ideas in app and program making. Combined that with consumer use, I think that's why it's the more favored or highlighted browser in the bunch.

Yeah, cleaning your browser history and cache and cookies and all may help in some way. But it will still be the same thing, it will still load up and stack up periodically and it would be a hassle if you keep on doing that from time to time. It's just how it is, Google Chrome really eats a lot. Other browsers do not do this. Maybe because there are a lot of features integrated into Chrome, don't you think?

I use Chrome as a secondary browser. Firefox is my first choice. I use chrome when I have to sign into my another social media accounts. I have two facebook accounts and two twitter acounts. Unlike Gmail which allows us to add accounts and use different emails at a time from the same browsers, we cannot do the same with facebook or twitter. Therefore, I use chrome to sign into my another social media account. I have also noticed that Chrome is terribly slow compared to firefox. Another drawback of chrome is it does not respond if the connection gets slow.

Chrome is slow if your machine is slow. This post is obviously saying that if you have low spec'd computer, specially on the RAM department, Google Chrome would eventually slow your system down. So far on my desktop, Google Chrome hasn't shown any slowness even though it somehow it's 1GB or more of my RAM depending on how many tabs I opened. As for the connection, I haven't had the same issue.

I was also concerned about how much RAM memory Google Chrome was eating, turns out I had a low RAM memory and just needed to upgrade. In today's world, 4GB or RAM is too little for a modern browser like Chrome which can hold loads of extension and do all sort of syncs as well as other tricks.

I personally upgraded to a total of 8GB of RAM and I haven't looked or felt the need to look at how much Google Chrome is eating in terms of RAM memory. I also upgraded to an SSD, you will definitely see a difference, trust me.

I didn't know this! I actually use Google Chrome too! I was thinking maybe I had a virus - I do have an antivirus but you never know- or my computer was fading away but maybe it is just my browser. I had never use any other except for internet explorer lol. I have firefox in my computer but I never use it. what do you think of using this one? any good?

Yes. I experience this problem with Chrome too and it can be very frustrating sometimes because it keeps slowing down by activity and there is also this frequent "Chrome is not responding fault so I have to keep on waiting until it comes back around. I am wondering if there isn't anything that Google can do to correct this problem.

I have this experience too. I noticed it first when I was using an old laptop that was already slow to begin with, and when I checked the task manager I couldn't believe how much resource Chrome was using up with each tab. It really made me wonder why it has become the default browser for the majority, but I would admit that it works very well especially when you compare it with the older versions of previously popular browsers. On my new laptop I have multiple browsers installed and I still use Chrome primarily because the laptop can handle it anyway, but I do agree that Opera is a pretty good alternative that has some built in features that Chrome is missing.

For me Firefox eats most of the RAM. I am pretty much fine with the Chrome. Firefox runs very slow for me. No matter how much RAM is given to the firefox it just keeps on bloating all the way. You can see that Chrome seems to be lot better in that case. You may want to find out how the RAM is being eaten by say flash based website or something else. Flash and graphics based sites eat a lot of RAM.

Well, i hated chrome right from the begging, it's just not my spec. And the only time i open chrome is one i want to test my web during development . and for the RAM snapping, i think it's caused by extensions and adds-on.
So do not install lots and lots of extensions on your browser.I know that extensions in Google Chrome are a great way to experience better browsing experience and it also gets a lot of things done but at the same time it also slows down your
browser. While I started cleaning up, I deleted almost 12 extensions that I do not even know and do not use them at all. So you should also go to the extensions in your browser and uninstall the ones that you do not even know or use. A little bit of clean up can come a long way increasing the speed and freeing up some memory in your system for other applications to use the memory.

Oh yeah absolutely. I've been quite familiar with the fact that Google Chrome is an absolute glutton when it comes to RAM use. That being said, I've never really had much of an issue with it, so it's the only browser that I've been using for the last couple of years. My computer has 16 GB of RAM, so needless to say when it comes to just browsing the internet, I have more than a couple of gigs to spare. On the other hand, if I'm working in a RAM intensive program such as After Effects or Photoshop, I typically don't have Chrome open anyway as I'm trying to focus on my work.

Since I've updated to windows 10, I've been using Microsoft Edge browser.

I've grown use to it as a substitute to chrome. Because of the popularity of the google chrome browser I believe it is more susceptible to viruses and unwanted ad-ons and that increases its RAM usage.

Edge is a pretty good browser but sometimes it also takes too much RAM especially when lots of tabs are open GOOGLE CHROME - RAM EATER

I'm a heavy Google Chrome user, and when heavy, I mean three-windows-open-each-window-having-up-to-twenty-tabs-and-fifteen-extensions heavy. And I run it on an old desktop with 12GB RAM on an i3 processor with 2GHz. I am aware of the RAM-eating problem, but I'm not complaining. I am using an extension that will quickly store all or selected tabs into just one tab, and restore them later when I need them.

You're right, just days back I noticed the slowness of my lappy and I clear all clearable and nothing changed.I had to browse and discover this same chrome as the culprit.I immediately deleted it and installed firefox and so far no drawing-back problem.

I switched to Google Chrome as I was having some problem with Mozilla Firefox. So far I didn't really had any problem with Chrome. It has not slowed down my laptop and I find it faster to use than other browsers. I guess it depends on your computer and laptop too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Yep it really depends. If your laptop has atleast 4.00GB of memory or RAM, then it will handle Google Chrome just find. Although if you are doing some rendering or editing such as using softwares like Photoshop or Sony Vegas Pro, and you have Google Chrome with at least 2 or 3 tabs opened, you will feel a bit of a slow down on your machine because Google Chrome eats a lot of RAM and there will be less available for your other softwares. That is if you are multi-tasking.

Google Chrome does use some resources on your computer but the fact is 4GB Ram should be upgraded to at least 8 Gb if possible because we have to consider how Operating systems like Apple OS and Windows OS are pouring on the update patches nowadays and this adds extra strain on your machine. Chrome is rather efficient despite it's substantial memory usage. You should consider other culprits like perhaps your antivirus and the updates that rather intrude on your functionality these days considering the way how they are being applied to your machine.

Chrome seems to work well on my laptop, Firefox does not. But I still use it. Installed Opera because my daughter uses it. But I've never used it. I installed it because my daughter says it's good to have more than one browser on your computer. She's our in-house geek. I take her word for it.

A potato? Never heard of that! (O.o)

Google Chrome works fine on my laptop and I don't see how it consumes much RAM. My laptop is a core i5 with 8GB of RAM and it works seamlessly. The only time I get pissed with chrome's performance is when my internet connection is slow and it begins to not load webpages.

I am glad to encounter this topic because we are having an issue with our desktop’s operation which is getting slow at times. And when we would check the task manager, it would show that Chrome is eating much of the memory. With that, we tested the situation in using another browser. We have a strong suspicion that it is Chrome that is also affecting the slowdown of our wireless keyboard. With this topic, I guess there is a problem with Google Chrome.
