Do you allow ads in signatures?

Many forums allow users to have their own signature to allow them to customise and personalise their posts a bit. Most people tend to have images of their favourite teams, shows or a favourite quote. But some users, mostly ones that own their own website, forum or blog will have advertisement banners/promotional text in their signature space. But do you have any rules against advertising in signature space? I personally don't see any problem with it but I don't allow advertising for rival sites (advertising another general discussion forum etc.)

Its up to TOS. Many forums has their own rules. I knew there is a forum who strongly restrict this, but its allowed on another forum. So, its up to the rules of the forum.

It depends on the forum rules. There is one forum that I liked best, Forumcoin that allows members to advertise their own site provided that they pay for the service. This is fair and square. Nothing is free in this world. I can see many members are willing to have their points deducted for the signature and I am planning to do that too.

I guess that it is just one of the things that you have to take into account when you are on a forum. Sometimes their rules may allow this and sometimes they don't. It is just one of the considerations that you might need to take advantage of and use.

I don't have any problems with that either as long as it's not the competition as you said. It's a great way to help your followers and they'll appreciate it. You also have the choice to charge them for the promotion of their site on yours but it's a matter of choice I guess...

There's no problem with them as long is not a rival blog or you're not out to be mischievous then you can add whatever to your signature. What I do whenever I get to comment on a site is to read the terms and conditions to be sure I'm not violating any rule, which this could be one of it.

I have seen plenty of forums that allow signature. You can see that using ads in the signature definitely helps with the promotion of the content. I meant to say many people choose to promote their site or services. And for this reason you can see them making use of the signature. I think that's a good option. If I were to own forum, i'd surely allow this for other users to make use of as well.

I don't allow signatures on my forums because I went to bed one night and a admin from another website. Signed up to my website and spammed my website with low quality posts just so they could get their signature all over my forum. When I seen what they did I disabled signatures and removed their signature and they haven't been back since.

If the user is a quality contributor to the forum, I most definitely am fine with them promoting their own site in the signature. The only time it can get a little dicey is if they're a direct competitor. If they are and allow for me to post and have a signature link on their site, then I'd likely be okay with it.

If I own the forum then I would probably just allow it as a courtesy to the member because that will be a plus factor for them to linger in my forum. We have to admit that some forum members are in the forum for the benefit that they can get like new connections to people and spamming in a different way. Letting them use the signature for that purpose is decent and I believe it wouldn’t hurt the forum.

I wouldn't allow ads in signatures. People hate generally hate ads which is why more and more people are starting to block ads. I wouldn't allow links on signatures either. If someone wants to know more about a forum member they should visit that member's profile page. They will find a link to this member's site if s/he has one. IMO no one should demand more than that.

Someone who wants to promote their site could create quality content and link to articles (on their site). That would probably more effective than a spammy-looking ad.
