Can advertisements put off users?

Advertisements can help an owner make money from their websites, blogs or forums. But can actually putting advertisements on your site hurt revenue because people may find these advertisements annoying and leave your website? The thing is that I have visited several sites where they have overloaded the whole website with advertisements all over the place. It's sometimes hard to distinguish the actual content on the site from the advertisements. This is especially true for some download sites so I tend to leave that site straight away. Do you guys think advertisements can affect your views?

As an user, I hate when there are too many advertisements, especially when they prevent me from seeing the content. On some sites, the ads are huge and go over the text/images, which just ruins the whole point of the site - I'm not on it for the ad.
Pop up ads are the worst thing, all my focus goes to closing them instead to what I'm looking for on the site. So if I'm able to find a similar site with less ads, I'd go for it.
As for regular, less noticeable ads, I don't think most users would mind. You notice them if they're relevant for you, but if they don't interest you they don't bother you either.

Yes, and that is if the advert is boring, not appealing or full of lies. Some adverts on TV are so boring to the extent that I lose my temper whenever I see them. So it's always best to be precise, concise and excuse me to say 'sensible' during advert making.

Yeah, i think it can definitely drive visitors away. I plan on monetizing my blog soon and since it talks about spirituality I thought that I'd leave the advertisements off and ask for donations instead. If people like my content they are more likely to leave a few bucks than they are to click on an advertisement I guess.

I guess so yeah, I sometimes get annoyed at ads especially when I know that they're advertisement is full of lies.

I have encountered ads though that has been beneficial to me. I sometimes discover new site this way and it's pretty great.

So maybe if your content lives up to the promise your advertisements are shelling out, then advertising is a good idea to get your content out there.

I intend to get there buddy. I started out slowly and am building my website an article at a time, a few modifications at a time. Eventually, i'll get there. Sooner is better but I don't want to rush anything because I'm focusing on quality here.

Yes it can, but on the other hand I think that is harder to accomplish rather then inviting traffic to your market. The reason why I think is because in today's modern society we are accustomed to commercials, I mean it's everywhere right. And in addition to why I think commercials most of the time invite rather then put off is because the man behind the commercial has a target audience he wants to reach, and has done his do diligence to attract that audience I must assume. So with that said I think it has to be a really boring or to mainstream of a commercial to drive people away.

That will depend a lot on how the ads are placed within the page. If they're blocking the view, chances are I'll opt out of the site and go on to the next site on the search page. I like ads that are strategically placed because they allow viewers to view the page in its entirety. I am actually more inclined to click on ads this way. But, and this is a big but, if the page has compelling content that I can't find elsewhere, I'll grudgingly try to navigate through the jungle of ads.

I definitely agree with you. Advertisement can undoubtedly put the users off. Just imagine coming to a website that has 10 different ads that half cover the articles, then a few pop-under ads and more! I would instantly leave and probably put that website on my block list. You should always be careful how much advertising you want on your website AND where you put it! You want to put the actual ads in areas where it won't distract the users to this point that it would be hard to navigate.

Particular advertisements that are ''famous'' for being very off putting are the so called pop-up ads and pop-under ads.

Yes is my answer to the thread's title. But it depends on how the advertisement is presented. I hate those pop ups because they surprise me with their sudden appearance. I also don't like the big fonts of advertisements with the big images that are slow to display. Especially when I am focused on what I am doing in one website, the advertisement can truly be irritating much more when it affects the display of the webpage. But subtle ads are okay since they don't distract the user.

I think it does and for this reason many people are using the adblockers. And that has prompted the Chrome for making use of the standards for some ads. And that is another reason many people are making use of those adblocker in other way. Advertisement are going to fade and we are moving towards the pay wall in upcoming days. i guess it'd be harder for many to make money in future.

It depends on how you place your ads on your site. If you properly organized ads on your site and limit it to a minimum of 2 per page, it would not affect users who view your webpage. But if there's too much, it will really put off readers, especially if there are lots of pop-ups, it's quite disturbing to the readers.

Ads shouldn't be intrusive and shouldn't block the content and I think that's the situation where yes, it can put off users. However, websites need ads to survive and I think that while most users accept that, some are just hellbent on getting upset by it. I don't like pop-up ads, but I'm fine with them disappearing after I click 'x', but if they open a new tab or a window? Or even worse, play a video? I am simply exiting the tab and losing all interest.

Your users may be generous, but they are not that generous. Sure, they will make a purchase from your ads if they are interested, but they won't simply make a purchase just to help you out. If you want users to scratch you back, you have to scratch theirs.

I do not like sites with too many ads. I find these ads distracting and will opt to use another website with less ads if both can provide the same value for me.

This is a great topic, actually, and I have always worried about this with my blogs. My blogs are based upon "literary" topics, so a lot of people who frequent them can get easily turned off by ads and see them as evidence of me "selling out". I find this to be disturbing because it takes times to create good blog content and to create intellectually stimulating content, so I would hope that readers and frequenters would understand that the time I am using to provide them with good content is time I could be using to make money elsewhere, but it seems that the general consensus is that most people just want their sensibilities catered to regardless of the situation or difficulties of the content provider.

I've heard of some users having a problem with it, which led them to install Adblock. I for one, don't get bothered with advertisements unless they don't allow me to skip them. There are aggressive advertisements out there that wouldn't let you leave the page unless you check out their product and such, having those kinds of ads in a site totally turns me away from them.

Well, this depends in some cases yes it can hurt your business in some cases it won't affect you a bit because the users have the option to block the adverts. This depends on what kind of advertising someone uses for their business. I have posted adverts on my site and I must say that this it didn't affect my site in a negative way from the contrary it was a positive effect.

Yes! As a user, I hate sites with too many ads. It irritated me a lot especially if its prevent me from viewing the main content on the site. I would use adsblock if the contents on the site is valuable, if not I would simply leave the site.

I believe advertisement can put off users if it's too much or not properly presented. Too much adverts on a webpage kills the user's zeal for using such webpage. As a user I get really irritated by adverts scattered all over a website. The really annoying ones are the popup ads that come up whenever you select an item. Any time I find myself on such a webpage I exit immediately and I make sure to never come back.

Adverts are used to monetize a website and is a way to generate revenue for website owners. The best method to display ads on a website is to blend it in, keep it simple and well organized. Doing this will improve user interactivity and increase their stay on a webpage.

Advertisements should need to be properly optimized with website. Like ad sense. They work for a website on an optimized way. There people does not get bother.So if you use any one advertisement on an optimized way - than the website will not be disturb for any one. Affiliate advertisement is an important way to earn revenue from a website. But the ad of banner ads or text ads should need to stay on your website by a beautiful way.

Thanks for your query and to find out a nice point. By reading title of your question, firstly I thought you are talking about social media advertising. Though, social media adverting help to attract targeted user or customer. By the way body ad on any website or blog sometime may feel you boring to leave the website. Therefore, you need to optimization adverting on proper area on your blog or web. I saw many of blog owner using pop up ad on body of content, which really odd and harmful to keep user for long. Even pop up adverting can damage your SERP ranking. And some blog owner or forum owner use ad on intro content, that also bad idea. You must to know were you need to use banner or side banner or text ad which will look fine and attractive either disturbing visitors.

Yes I think poor advirtisment can be really Annoying, And fortunately thanks to ad blockers I don't have to deal with seing ads popping up to every click I do to certain site :-)
and I think there should be just another way for sites to make money with advertisements because for Some sites owner That's their only way to make money, All they need is to make them look professional.

I personally think that poor advertising has a unique way of putting viewers off. If you have ad strategy, that might not be emough. You need to ensure that your advertising media is polished and of good quality. For instance, if you're using sponsored video ads on Instagram, the video itself has to be sharp and clear. You can't use something substandard and expect that people should just take it hook, line, and sinker. Your medium of advertising has to be effective and must be organized in such a way that will capture the attention of any viewer.

Not really, as long as they are in the proper place or at the bottom or on top before the actual blog. What I don't like are those ads that seem like spam because it keeps flashing every now and then on the blog itself. That's what is annoying.

Anyway, those ads cater for the different tastes of the readers actually. Some readers have particular ads that they would open because it interests them. It is actually different for every person or visitor of the blog as to what ads they like to open.

As long as they aren't all over the page, they shouldn't be a problem. I mean people have to pay bills, and I think most people recognize that. I think that ads placed tactfully on a site should not be too bad. It doesn't bother me to run across them when I am reading a blog.

When I am browsing something in the net and I wanted to get the information as soon as possible, advertisements really annoys me. Most of the time this advertisement covers up a large part of the page and you have to click close to get rid of it. It is sometimes time consuming like for example in videos because you have to wait for the advertisement to finish first before you will be able to watch the video.

Advertisement can be somewhat annoying sometimes, especially when they are frequently popping up on the page and in places that will cause you to adjust what you were doing so that you are able to continue what you were doing. I know that people are seeking to make money just as I would like to do but sometimes it's too much and very annoying.

Initially, I don't think that it can affect the views because the users haven't seen the page that you will be leading them to. Once the visitors are already on your page and they see lots of ads crammed in, I there's a huge tendency that these people will leave. That's why we should also be mindful of ad placement and the number of ads that we place in one page or post. I usually put one banner ad on the sidebar and one in the middle of the post content. That's it. I no longer put link ads or whatever. I still get pretty good revenue. What's more important is the length of time the visitors spend at your site. The longer they stay, the better.

I hope this topic is not restricted to blogs alone. I hate them when I am watching videos on youtube. When I recommend a youtube video and I see Ads preceding the video and I wonder whether they will lose patience till the Add gets over. I wish there was a provision to delete those Ads.

And as for blogs you are right about readers getting that feeling that you are earning from those Ads and their opinion on the blog could be a bit biased.

The wrong Ad can really turn away potential clients and visitors who can either give a good recommendation or actually encourage sales. It's sometimes very annoying when I go to a website to engross myself into a topic or purchase something and out of nowhere a pop up Ad just side tracks my initial intentions leaving me to think "what was I actually doing on this website again?" On the other hand Ads that blend gracefully with the site can promote both the site and further monetize your web store.

There are too much advertisements on some sites and I don't appreciate it. Just yesterday I was on a particular site and couldn't actually read what was on the site. I couldn't close the advertisement being displayed and they told me to wait for some seconds to close it. Impatient as I am I just left the site. Sometimes I also don't like the advertisements being displayed too. The advertisements may also cause the site to load slowly at times.

The answer in my view is very much simple and that is, No. I don’t think it is possible for marketing to work alone, as content too is required. Yes advertisements can and will cause people to leave your website. My suggestion is if your website doesn't get a lot of traffic to not even bother putting on ads. Because people are not going to click on them anyway and your going to make people think that the only thing that you're after is money.

And even if you have a high traffic website, your better off with a few ads tops and not plaster ads all over the website, because people are going to use adblock or leave. And either way you're not going to make any money.

I agree that too much advertisement on your website will project an image that you are just after the earnings and not really for the niche or contents of your website. For me, I always leave the website when there is too much advertisement that is sometimes annoying because it diverts your focus. Advertisements are actually okay when they are properly placed on the web page.
