Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive

Instagram is taking a new step in policing it's posts, and it's for the better.  Instagram is now using machine learning that will help identify negative or hateful posts and actually block them.  Instagram started to push out some filters that will help block not only negative and offensive content but spammy content and comments as well.

Machine learning isn't something new when it comes to websites, a lot more of them use this type of action than you would think.  The way Instagram is using machine learning is pretty great because it shows that I won't get random image jackers, people who post their own promotions on my images, coming in and trying to take my followers.

You will have to activate this yourself, but it's not difficult.  All you have to do is go to your comment settings and click "Hide Offensive Comments" and after that, Instagram will begin to block anything they deem as offensive or spammy.  This will only help your posts be more of a communal conversation rather than someone arguing over what their favorite Kardashian is or what day of the week they prefer to sleep in on lmao Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive  Currently this is only available to the English language but should be opening up to other languages soon enough.

The problem with negative comments or content is that people get discouraged from using the app if they feel like they're being attacked.  By turning on the machine learning system for your content, you will let people post with knowing they aren't going to be jumped on and called dumb for their opinions Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive  If you don't think the system is working, you can always turn off comments completely.  Now you won't be able to get people adding their own tags or even tagging people within your posts, but sometimes it's worth it.

Not too long ago there was a feature launched by Instagram that allows you to filter out comments if they had certain keywords in them, which is awesome, but might not always work.  This new feature allows you to not have to worry about what is going to be posted on your images because the machine learning system will only get better over time Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive

There is another filter that runs in the background that will remove comments that are obviously spammy, but that's nothing new.  This feature will remove something from your post or live videos if it is deemed spammy, and it's does it for the languages English, Spanish, Portuguese, French Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Arabic.

Implementing a machine learning system that will help safeguard a lot of things when it comes to using Instagram, it's a step forward in innovation.  More and more companies will be doing this over time because of human error.  Humans might miss something, but a machine is programmed to run hundreds of thousands of commands, much more than a human can do, and find anything that breaks the rules.  If a comment breaks the rules, it's removed Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive

These features started to roll out on Instagram in March when they started to blurr photos and videos that they saw as NSFW.  This way they can keep some content and let people publish what they want, while also deleting hateful and spammy comments at the same time.

In conclusion:
Instagram is building a better place for all of it's users and contributers.  They are making it a more enjoyable place for everyone with their new machine learning that will police all the spammy and hateful comments as well as the negative and NSFW posts Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive  It's only going to get better for everyone down the road Instagram now uses machine learning, bots, to help block anything offensive

Yes, but who decides what's offonsive? Algorithmic monitoring has already taken it's toll on YouTube via demonitization in a way that seems pretty baised in favor of some content creators over others. Different people find different things offensive, so what standard will Instagram apply?

This is a good question. How does the filter determine if the post is offensive? It is like the taste that depends on who is tasting or maybe like the adage that says beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. But I like social media to have filters against negative posts, fake news, false information, chain posts and other nonsensical posts. Users are very irresponsible when it comes to sharing items. They just share posts even without reading.

Well, I hope they will have one. Nowaday social media is full off negative posts, fake news and false information. And there is a kind of people who want others to cklick in their links, sometimes they use womans pictures with less clothes to attract people to their linksor false information, and you click the link you don't find anything about the tittle of the post.

I agree o removing spam comments as well as very offensive content that aren't really SFW but lately both Facebook, Instagram, and Google has begun this crusade on free speech. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about offensive speech here, I'm just referring to ideas and opinions said in a decent matter that some people find "offensive" and want them removed by all costs.

I believe free speech is slowly dying of the internet and the only thing that will remain is high "politically correct" opinions.

Well, it's certainly a step in the right direction. I'm sure it won't be perfect, but it's a good start. Hopefully, this will be a thing added to all social media platforms. Negativity on social media will always be present, but we must begin with something. I'm sure they're focusing on personal or public accounts and the comments some people leave that could cause harm to someone. If you ask me, this is a good thing.

AI and machine learning are the future of all big companies. Instagram use the same techniques that Facebook and Google, he wants the machine found the patterns had improved and was effective. They use these methods because it is the only way to quickly and efficiently process such big data and solve business problems. My company has already applied for machine learning consulting from inData Labs - https://indatalabs.com/services/ma...rning-consulting after the number of users of our platform exceeded 1 million. It is not possible to analyze data effectively without the right technologies

Free speech? Free speech means you have the freedom to express yourself. It also means people have the freedom to ignore you expressing yourself. Free speech means you can speak out but it was never a guarantee that everybody must listen to you!! If you want to go shout on a mountain top? Go right ahead. But you can't to demand that I listen to you shouting. You have free speech. I have free will. You have free will to exercise your free speech. I have free will to not listen to you exercising your free speech. We're both free!!

Here's the thing with Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They are “social” platforms. It's how you behave in a social setting. It's just that it's online and you're not talking face to face with the person.

They say it's a subjective point if view, but most people know when something offends them. They don't need to get another person's point of view as to whether another person offended them. Why should you be forced to stay in the company of people who offend you? Who wants to hang around people who are always offending them?

If you're rude and obnoxious or “offensive” offline; you'll probably be the same way online. If people disregard you and don't enjoy being around you because rude and disrespectful offline? Guess what? People online will react toward you in the same way. Only they call it “blocking” or “reporting as spam” or “harassment” or whatever.

People always ignore people or turn them off when they don't think that the person is saying something they want to hear? It doesn't change because you're on the Internet. People are still people!

The difference is that when you're online the abuse can be amplified and you need an easy way to stop or prevent it, so that you can enjoy your online social experience. You don't want to sign in to your social media account and waste half of you day going through communications that are “garbage”. If you have to use a computer program that dumps the garbage for you? So be it.

Also, there is that “next step”. That “next step” being the individual initiating the abusive or offensive behavior might also be an extremely dangerous and violent person. Their taunts online is just the beginning of what they may be planning to do. You don't know!

So if a system can be developed that thwarts these kind of people from starting off as a cyber bully and ending with an act of … God knows what? So be it.

If you can't reason with an idiot offline, then you won't be able to reason with an idiot online!! (O.o) God knows nobody wants to leave a door wide open to allow all kinds of unsavory characters to easily enter in and terrorize people!

GO INSTAGRAM!!

I don't even have an Instagram account. But I approve.

UPDATE 11/10/2018"
Thanks to a Facebook friend I now have an Instagram account. My first post was dated NOVEMBER 2, 2017. So I've had the account for about a year and I am very happy with the “environment”. I interact with other account holders and it is very amicable. It's the strangest thing. Unlike my other social media accounts, I gain Instagram followers every day. I'm loving it!

This is definitely a step in the right direction in my opinion. However, my only concern is that Instagram might start to take away free speech like Facebook is currently doing.

what Facebook is doing is very important personally I think they took too long to notice that lots of people were free to post segregating, hateful, threatening and all kinds of bad messages; I'm glad they are creating a safe environment for everyone, and may be there won't be religion based determinations and offensive messages like it used to be.
I think it's even better with Instagram because we are the ones to activate that machine to protect our accounts from spams, now social media is getting safer slow by slow.

You put out some good points that I agree with. However, I still think that Facebook is taking a bold move by taking away freedom of speech. After all, wasn't Facebook created to express opinions with others on an online platform?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

of cause it's good to be free it's one of human's rights to be free to express their opinions but here the problem is that some conversations go beyond limits you'll find people who are capable to hurt others directly or indirectly with their post you know that happens in social media world right? so if they can control that then every one will feel good and fit on that platform.

Ahh, I see where you're coming from now. You have some very valid points. However, I still think that Facebook is stepping on a very fine line between freedom of speech and people abusing freedom of speech.

Haha, who their favorite Kardashian is. It is obviously Khloe!

But on a more serious note. I think that this is a good move from Instagram. There is always positive effects by adding more options for blocking out the offensive content. I just hope that some of the younger users will use this feature since I know youngsters love the Instagram and are therefore exposed to many weird images.

We will see how well optimized this new system will be over time. I am sure that they will keep updating it and listen to the feedback from the community.

I don't understand how Instagram will implement this. Will an Instalebrity block comments that give them pure criticism too? What is this algorithm? I have so many questions. Perhaps the algorithm depends on what you and others block and report over time. The problem is that you could potentially be blocked for saying you don't like the Kardashians, which is pretty silly. However, if you say off-topic things, even if they're harmless, I think it's fair. You can't post off-topic things here. Why would Instagram be accessible? I believe there are good aspects of the invention. Instagram needs to work out its kinks, however, before its consumers complain about censorship.

Well it's about time! Instagram is a haven for people who take sadistic pleasure in raining on other people's parade. Internet trolls, that/s what they are called. They identify and stalk a celebrity or a famous individual and comment/stalk them at every turn. Some people have Instagram accounts for business purposes and not for gathering likes, so I hope this new tool will help business accounts focus on their jobs.

Hi, yes I have seen that Instagram introduced an enhanced comment filter to avoid nasty remarks, What is strange is that you'll still be given the option to turn it off from inside the app’s settings, and Instagram still includes the ability to block custom words and phrases. it seems that the filter only works in English now but I am sure they will add more languages in time!

I love this development because I really hate those negative posts. I sometimes wonder why some people have the propensity to quarrel with their enemies using social media. Why don't they just confront their enemies face to face? That shows their cowardice huh. In Facebook, I am awaiting for their mechanism to check on false news and fake information. Maybe before the year ends, posts on Facebook will undergo checking for the veracity of the information. This is a good direction by the social media networks in cleaning the internet of rubbish. I just hope that their devices in checking those negatives would be accurate.

That's high-tech stuff. Imagine, creating an AI to filter offenders. Today, people are so innovative especially offenders, that they can find ways to deceive the system. Like instead of typing the word SHIT, they would use symbols to convey their message.

First Facebook, and now Instagram. Seems like these social medias have had enough of these spammers and bots who put nasty stuffs on the posts and comments. About time I say.

This is the first time I heard about machine learning. I think it's definitely a good feature to have, as I would not like to see something offensive on Instagram. I wonder why Instagram does not turn it on by default.

Thank you for sharing this.

While I find this to be a bit questionable I do think that it is a step in the right direction, and a noble use for automated software. I find it questionable because who is to judge exactly what is offensive? Censoring NSFW content is a pretty cut and dry process given the advancements in photo recognition software, but what algorithm can appropriately judge what people do or do not find offensive? I suppose they know what they are doing, but I still prefer the system that forums such as Reddit use. The community decides what is offensive to them, and downvotes the comment appropriately. With enough downvotes, the comment is no longer visible unless you choose to view it. I don't know if you can automate that.

Some people just spam up rubbish. I a very good idea using bots to block anything offensive. People just love causing problems.

The internet might be a wonderful place to get information, but infortunately some people usually post offensive, nonsense posts or inappropriate comments with their true accounts or dummy one, but the majority of them use only fake accounts.

This is a good idea in the right direction. A lot of offensive images, texts and videos are posted daily be evil minded people. This will help to purge the platform so that some teenagers that sneaks in will be disappointed.

It is about time. Now internet marketers are taking to Instagram to spam users with their affiliate promotions and it is a good thing Instagram has introduced such feature to avoid the network being saturated with irrelevant contents.

I hope they don't implement the same algorithm used in Facebook which blocks non-offensive photos. There have been several times where a photo I posted was blocked because apparently, it contains an "inappropriate image", in which it actually doesn't. There are also times where my photo would be censored because they think it shows disturbing imagery. Facebook would need to improve their algorithm if they want to apply that on Instagram.

I think, just like the Facebook community, Instagram is doing all they could to give their users the ability to personalize their accounts and that is how things should be done.

It is nice of Instagram to be using a system to block the bots from meddling in their network. Facebook has already found out about the fake numbers in the posts that it can have a figure of 1,000 likes but the actual number is only 15 which means the 985 likes were produced by bots which are not humans and considered fake users. Instagram is also popular with people who love to post selfie.
