How Can You Track Visitors To Your Own Website?

Hello freelancers,

Don't get me wrong here in the title of this discussion, I know you can see where your visitors comes from using various tools. - But, I'm interested to know the exact source of my visitors, if they visit a specific website.

Like seocheckout.com for instance. If I visit SC, Jordan could most likely see that I'm from Sweden and that I'm here, right?

If you shorten your links with url shorteners, like goo.gl, you'll also get statistics.

However, I'm looking for something else. (Well I think I do). I want to see where my visitors comes from, and also how they come to the given site.

Let's say I do a marketing campaign on the streets today. I give out flyers or whatever. I want to know if any of the visitors I get tomorrow, is one of the people I gave a flyer too. - Do you get my point? How Can You Track Visitors To Your Own Website?

And I would obviously not want to use goo.gl links or anything like that while doing the campaign.

How would you and how can you do something like this?

Best Regards,
hitmeasap

I use Google Analytics...but you can also install a plugin like Pretty Link and that will show you how many hits you get on that link. It won't give you detailed analytics but you will be able to see the total amount of hits and then on Google Analytics you can see how many people visited your website, their location and also often where they came from as in Facebook or from another website...

I am not sure yet if you asking for stats to see their country they coming from or you looking to narrow this info to smaller areas or even cities?

I would love to "track them down" a bit further than just country. Smallers areas or even cities would be amazing actually. Do you have anything in mind for this one?

With Google Analytics you can see the Cities that your visitors come from.

If you know PHP you could get their GEOIP location, then create another function to get their coordinates, and then find where they are coming from. However, with these tracking methods it is not always accurate as people use proxies, and use IP blockers/changers/etc.

There is probably a script somewhere that will do this for you, you may have to install it on a subdomain though, as that's usually how these scripts work.. something like track.yourwebsite.com. Then you would of course post your tracking link on all pages.

For me, I'm not too worried about the city, but more rather worried about where they were referred from. I like to know what website the user visited before they visited my own website.

Oh, that sounds cool. Well yeah, I can totally see why you'd rather want to know where they were referred from.. However, if I could know their actual location in a scenario like the one I stated above, then that could also be used in research purpose, for future things. - Information and knowledge is key after all, and with that kind of knowledge, it would be easier to set something up in the future.. Something that I would benefit from even more.

I use Google Analytics for tracking the visitors. I am currently working on the way to work with the event tracking. And from there I am learning to use how to track the website clicks and other stuff. I wish to learn how to do this in due time. I think google analytics can tell you a lot about your website and the visitors. So it all comes down to how you choose to use the data from there onwards.

If you have a wordpress site, there is a good plugin that tracks your visitors. This plugin not only blocks unauthorized login but also give details of the visitors such as the link that brought them to the website, their location and IP address. Google analytics is alos a good tool to track visitors. In order to use google analytics, you have to link your website with your analytic account.

It looks like Google Analytics will do that job of monitoring the sources of traffic to your site. I had seen the statistics of one website where the numbers include the countries where traffic came from. That is one good statistics because you can determine the strength of your site regarding the language of the content. Some webmasters prefer traffic from the US and Europe while others prefer a local traffic for business purposes.
