Almost every business now has a website and that means the competition is pretty daunting when it comes to getting to the coveted top 3 spots for each keyword.
Competing with he big businesses who already have a lock on the top 3 is tough to do since they have access to funding you only dream of or they already have the linking profile which is nearly impossible to compete with.
If you're new to the online marketing game, you may not be able to fight these larger corporations head to head for the top 3 spots. The only way you'll be able to compete is if your product is a new invention, but even though you have something new, you'll have to cut through the digital noise in order to break out.
I've got a few tips you can use to still be successful even if you're going up against large corporations
Let's get to it.
1. Dominate your local market
People on smartphones usually search for local businesses or services in order to get something done. Local search is getting more popular since the search engines are giving priority to mom and pop shops with great reviews and services. It's not the million dollar corporations dominating everyone anymore Big businesses may have what you do, but you're a specialist and can do it better. Whether it's making cupcakes or unclogging a drain, your baked goods are hand made and custom and your plumber services are backed with years of knowledge. People understand this and will contact you.
Be sure to get on the citation websites like yelp, yellowpages, superpages, etc. because the search engines are following those platforms more now than ever.
Be involved within the community like sponsoring local events or participating with charity events. You can donate branded merchandise in order to be given away to people and that's a way you can market for a small fee. Pens and magnets seem to work best because people can use them daily.
2. Be the authority in your field
The internet is turning into a phone book, and people are searching reviews and companies all the time and making decisions on whether to buy based on what they find online. Post great content on niche related websites, blogs or forums and even your own website. This will help you get ranked in the SERPs for many low competition keywords and bring people into your website. People will judge you based on what you say before they even talk with you. So make sure you're spinning words of gold and helping out people for free online
If you can find local websites talking about your niche or industry, get on them! Even if the website isn't popular, you don't know who's reading your posts and coming to your website. I personally have been on a few websites, blogs and forums that are in my area and they get maybe 1 or 2 uniques a day, but they consistently send me customers each month due to me posting on there and helping out when I can. People see me helping others and they will evaluate my content to figure out if I know what I'm talking about. They will then message me on that forum, website, blog or they will email me directly through the website I have linked in my signature
3. You need to be mobile
It's pretty insane to see how many small businesses don't think they need their websites to be responsive (mobile friendly). All the time I hear "I don't need to be mobile friendly, I'm only working with people in the area and they know who I am". So you don't want new business? Not everyone knows who you are lol.
Google changed it's algorithm a while back and gives priority to responsive designs in it's SERPs. This is due to the massive amount of searches on Google being from mobile devices. If the website doesn't load properly within the mobile device, that person usually leaves pretty quick. Optimize for mobile and you'll notice a lot more people contacting you
In the end, the local market is your main target at first if you're in a niche with big businesses. Hit it hard and it will pay off in the long run
