Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

In the past I've done some basic flyer advertising for my friends companies because I had some free time so I decided to help them out. By doing this, it got me thinking of how I could generate leads for my own company by putting out flyers.

After a bit of back and forth with my designer we eventually had a good design. I didn't go with flyers because they just look cheap, in my honest opinion. I went with high quality door hangers and paid a little more for them. If I remember correctly I paid my designer $40 to put together the front and back of the door hangers and another $400 for 1,000 of them through a printing company. I'm sure if you went through a company like vistaprint it would cost at least twice what I paid for them Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

I got them pretty quick, I think it took 10 days to print and ship them to me, which is pretty quick. They came in packs of 100 and I loved that because when I was passing them out I could pace myself based on how many packages I opened.

So now I have a massive amount of door hangers, but where do I put them? On business doors! I avoided houses like the plague because I'm selling a service that is specific to website owners. And who usually owns a website? A business owner Using door hanger ads to gain clients. Me and my partner went out after 9pm because we wanted to get these out so people could see them when they got into work. And not just anyone would see them, the person who has the keys to open the doors to the business (the decision maker) would see it first.

We spent around 16 hours putting out all of the door hangers. We went out on Tuesday night and Wednesday night and put out 500 each night all around where we lived. We targeted the nicer towns with bigger shopping centers where there weren't many franchises. After we got them all out, we had to wait by the phone for some calls.

It was a week before I got any calls Using door hanger ads to gain clients. And I only got 1 call of someone wanting to sign up Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

But there is a bright side to this! The company that signed up was willing to pay my company just under $4,000 a month Using door hanger ads to gain clients. They wouldn't sign a 1 year contract with us because they had been burned by a different SEO and Marketing company, so they were weary of the work that was going to be done. But I still made $11,000 off of a $475 investment Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

You can easily make money, you just have to think outside of the box and be willing to put in the time to do so. I spent around 20 hours on this between the design of the door hangers and the actual walking around putting them out.

Not a bad ROI right Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

Now get out there and make some money Using door hanger ads to gain clients.

Razzy 6000 bucks from an ordinal 275 investment is a hell of an ROI!
But what is the deal with the phone call? Did clients needed to call you first to signup? Wasn't the website address published in the flyers so maybe they can check out everything by themselves?

People nowadays will first check the online website and only then maybe they'll make a call of absolutely necessary.
This reminds me of affiliate earnings here on SC. I only got 7 members to signup and only 2 of them actually both services, a total worth of 253 bucks...not too bad for only 2 affiliates.

Yeah so you never know when you can struck gold, this is why its hugely important to keep advertising.

Cristian how did you get those 7 affiliate referrals?

I have written a review on Seocheckout and I have 4 referrals so far.. but I would love some more tricks and tips.

I have pinned some services to Pinterest using my affiliate links so maybe that will turn out well.

I remember promoting Seocheckout on a popular webmaster forum back in the days. I would just straight up contact old clients or people I've done business with and promote my affiliate link

Very smart idea placing the hangers at night so the business owner would see it first thing in the morning when they opened shop. I always said that the best time to reach the boss or decision maker is early in the morning before the doors are open and also after the business is closed.

Idea #1: Walk into the business during the day an introduce yourself. Hand them the flyer and give them a quick pitch. it is important not to expect a full conversation because they could be busy with their business. It will take longer waiting to talk to the boss but I'll bet you would get a few more customers. There is nothing like a face to face meeting.

Idea #2: Setting appointments via telephone (cold calling) to meet with the boss produces a nice close ratio. For the most part, business people don't set appointments unless they are interested in your product or service. On average 6 out of 10 meetings will turn into a new clients as long as you present properly. You also have to know how to ask for the sale and close the deal.

Idea #3: Design a small multi page brochure (like you see for used cars or real estate). At the bottom on all of the pages have tear strips that has your company name, phone, website etc... Place a small stack in restaurants where business people take lunch. You will get a lot of eyeballs on your service and since there are a zillion tear strips on the bottom of each page the shelf life of the brochure will last a long time. Tip: take scissors and pre-cut the strips to make it easy for people to tear off the contact strip or your brochure will get destroyed faster than normal.

Razzy what a brilliant idea. I loved the fact that you added that the person that unlocks the business in the morning is most likely the person you want to target!

Yes you may only have received one phone call and one customer from that marketing exercise but like you said it still worked out profitable for you by a long way!

Plus many more people might have visited your website that you don't know about, on top of that you never know, maybe so of those door hangers are still sitting on the back of one of those door handles in one of those companies!

But the best thing I liked about your post is that you are encouraging others to get creative and get out there to try new things. Some things will fail and some things will be productive so nothing is sure about that. However if you don't try you will be sure to fail.

I loved reading this Razzy. Well done and I am glad that you got a good ROI. I am quite sure that most of those business owners saved the door hanger for future reference, and most probably in time you will get even more calls. The idea of opting for a door hanger instead of the normal boring flyer was just great. Sometimes a little creativity can work wonders. Most likely if you had just made flyers they would not even have given them a glance and just throw them away in the nearest rubbish bin.

Great tip. I think offline advertising is often underrated, with the assumption that online advertising and marketing has taken over. But why only use one method ? My concern would be, would people allow you to put your flyers on their doors? I think that would this method would work best in modern coffee shops, cyber cafes and approaching individual small business owners and convincing them that they need websites. I agree sometimes we just refuse to think outside the box. In my opinion this is the difference between success and failure.
