How many websites is too much?

I'm a freelance writer and in the past I have worked with a lot of website owners, some of which have 10+ websites on the go. Personally I have control of two sites right now and I feel this is the perfect amount to manage. I guess if you have the capital to outsource your work like my clients do then it will be easy to manage such a vast amount of sites.

How many sites do you have at once, and what do you think is the sweet spot? I know a lot of people have a blog network, which helps with ranking, but personally I like to focus on just one thing at once.

It depends on what your budget is and how do you prefer in doing business. I've had clients with over 100 websites but they had an army of freelancer to manage them all and one guy to manage the freelancers.
So having a lot of websites is doable, the only problem is time and finding good people to hire or outsource.

I agree man I can agree and understand how you feel budget plays a part and how you feel it effects the decision making when trying to up the level of operation as far as how many sites one goes in to managing and by then if you do expand enough I can see what you mean by getting a team and some one to lead them, with all these sights you can create jobs and if you get people to handle it and some one to supervise you probably will never go wrong in the long run it makes perfect senses

I agree that it depends on your budget or capital and also the way you handle the sites. If you are hiring a virtual assistant or assistants for the maintenance and upkeep of your sites that include the uploading of contents then I guess the number of websites that you can handle is almost unlimited. But for a good business sense, I will limit the number of websites based on the time that I can devote to each website.

I don't think there should be an upper limit for websites. It highly depends on the type of websites as some websites require little management while others require more management. I tend to make websites that require little management or have very high potential. If you make websites that require little management, then having lots of websites is fine. As a webmaster, having more websites means more profit so I just need to just make time for all of them. I currently only have 2 websites but I want to expand my network and create more websites to increase my profits.

You have a very good point about the type of websites. I have 3 blogs and lately I just don't have the time available to write for them all. I am at a point now where I am earning enough that I will be able to outsource a lot of my content writing... yay!

And to real clear you probably put it in the most simplest terms possible you mention in your comment you do not think there should be a limit on the sites so basically what you implying is that it is possible to run multiple sites and I like how you go on to explain why as you mention that it works every thing will work out if you run sites that have a low maintenance to them you can run plenty of low maintenance sites and for a web master that really can make a difference so I understand you point of view

Being a webmaster is not easy, however the number of sites you decide to manage will depend mainly on the kind of sites, the work that you need to do on them, and also the amount of time you have at your disposal. For instance, if one of the sites requires occasional updating and maybe posting an article or two every week, that is not too demanding. But a website that is an e-commerce store is going to require seeing to the various product updates, descriptions, photos from different angles, and payment processing. Every site calls for SEO to improve its ranking, and that also requires consistent effort.

I agree that it probably is not the most peaceful mind relaxing job but if you can do it right and effectively you'll see a lot of good results over a certain a mount of time and that is every ones goal right success I do believe you have great points when it comes to stuff like this in order to be a great web master you have to be able to have time through out the week the amount of time you have at your disposal is key cause of course it is common sense if you have no time then you might be in a jam

I don't think you can have too many. Well, as long as they can pay for themselves lol How many websites is too much?

I think I have around 20 active websites right now and each of them can at least pay for their own hosting, which is nice. I actually downloaded the files on the hosting accounts of 5 of my websites and closed them down because they weren't profiting. I could keep them up, but I just don't have the time to manage them right now and since they're not making money, they're done for now. Maybe in the future I'll upload the files again and try to push the site a little more, but I don't have any plans of doing that right now lol.

I can afford to keep websites on hosting accounts if they aren't profiting, but I don't like to because if they suddenly get popular I'll be stuck between a rock and a hard place since my plate is already full. The only websites that I'll keep up and running, that aren't profiting, are the ones that are almost 100% automated. If I just have to check emails and the website runs fine day after day, I'll keep it up.

When I started I was struglling with just 1 website, and not I have 20ish. I never thought I'd have so many running, but I'm glad I do lol How many websites is too much?

So to answer your questions "how many websites is too much?" I would say that's up to your and your wallet How many websites is too much? If you can't afford to keep them up and running, then take them down. Otherwise let them age like a fine wine How many websites is too much?

I think it depends on what your level of experience is too and how well you can automate things.

I was working my butt off a few years ago all day every day on just one website. I actually hired an assistant to help me with things. Now I have no assistant and I have 3 websites. I work half as much and make tons more money.

It's crazy how things turn out lol How many websites is too much?

I had a website that I was working 16 hours a day on and I didn't have time to do anything else. I had my friend come in and help with the company and he figured out a way to cut my workload from 16 hours to 1 hour haha How many websites is too much? He automated the job creation and report sending so that I didn't have to do it manually. So now I worked for 1 hour on that website and the rest of the day was either Research and Development or generating leads How many websites is too much?

Now I have a bunch of sites and I still don't work 16 hours a day because of automation lol. I also try to make all of my websites extremely user friendly so that I don't have to respond to a ton of support tickets each day. I'll also have a super detailed FAQ or knowledgebase so that people can find an answer before contacting me.

And now I even have a designer and programmer that fix anything that breaks before I know it's even broken. It took me years to get to this point and find the right people, but I'm glad I busted my ass in the beginning to do so because now I can work from home while my little girl watches a movie (penguins of madagascar at the moment lol).

I've never had an assistant, but I have had plenty of virtual assistants that did little tasks for me. Luckily they weren't pay by the hour How many websites is too much?

Wow man that is great, some times you can always find help were you least expect it , help can feel distance like it is in those hard to reach places , as you said you were only running one in the past and you were stuck running 16 hour days for one website and go on to mention how a buddie of yours came along and cut your workload basically took you original work load and grinded it into dust lol which is great and it is tricks and things that come in that form that you get from experience

That is so cool that your buddy could do that for you and show you that there is another way of doing things. That would have made 4 years of my life so much easier if I had someone to jump in and show me how to automate everything I was doing!

Oh yea Lynne experience can deft play a role in being a web master you figure the more you try the more you learn and the more you pick up on this the more you will find out new ways too get things done quicker you will find out your own little tricks and tools to the trade to work out the kinks and make sure that every thing is getting done as best as possible, I think it goes to say the same for just about anything you do in life if you put the time to perfect your craft the possibilities are endless

Yes it is awesome, plus another big thing I have learned is how to prioritize better. Some of the things I spent so long doing I don't even both with now or it is just not so important.

I used to be on Facebook all day. Now I automate everything and if I have time in my day I pop in, check if there are any important messages or notifications and I am gone.

I can't believe how much time I used to waste with social media. It is important YES, but it is only one of the things that I use now for marketing. Previously I put in a huge amount of effort there.

That is another thing I am noticing a lot of people are taking the time out to explain how the total number in sites does not effect them really ever but depending on the amount of work presented fourth it might be come a stressful task and a lot of people say that it is really key to make sure that you have enough time on your hands to handle business as far as task management web site management and managing you time well and effectively in order to maximize profit but you took a money stand point and I believe what your making also plays a factor

From a personal experience, too many websites is too much when it costs more a year to renew the domain than you're making in profit. I used to buy up many domains, especially if there was a new TLD, in the hopes of reselling it or creating a nifty website. So, you buy the domain, apply a script to it, design stuff, add content and leave it. That's what I did, it didn't make a penny, and I'm not too certain of what the traffic was. There was too many websites to manage them all, and when it came around to renew my renew bill was like $3,500.. No thanks!

Personally, I don't think you can have to many websites. How many you have is all dependent on what you are doing and what your goals may be. I am currently managing over 2,500 affiliate stores in the SEO niche and 46 more in a variety of niches from Doctor, lawyers, limousines, Advertising/Publisher, Bitcoin, Gifts, ETSY etc. All make money some better than others but I am always adding new sites to my quiver. If something doesn't work I'll scrap it and move on to the new project. Website management becomes easier if you use API's, content libraries and other tools for automation. Remember you control the websites. Don't let the websites control you. Make sure you don't create a scenario where you are working around the clock trying to manage your empire.

Yes when I first started working online my website controlled me big time! It took a long time to learn how to do things differently How many websites is too much?

Geez 2500 plus websites. I'm not sure I would ever be able to do that LOL

These 2500 websites are (as he said) affiliate stores, so it's probably on auto run. I have like 10 websites running as affiliate stores, fully automated and looks very dynamic, so i don't have to do anything on them except promotions and off-page SEO, that's how i boost my affiliate income which covering expenses i have for domain names and hosting. i suggest if anyone have domain names seating without use, turn them into affiliate stores, better then nothing, or you can be glad you did it.

Hi Hasa1015 thanks for your question. I personally think there has no limit of getting website. If you want, you can many and uncountable. I personally maintain four websites and I do not face any problem still. Actually it is depend on purpose and it is depend on business. I worked for many clients who has over 150 websites. And all for ecommerce site. each website has different product and category basis job. Not only on clients so many. And he offer me to do work for more sites and all are almost same.

So, it is depend on ability and wide of business.
