Ranking homepages with non-branded keywords

Let's face it, homepages are very difficult to rank, especially for non-branded keywords.
Google usually tends not to rank homepages for non-branded keywords because homepages usually don't have much content to offer, that's why article pages, listing pages or landing pages will always do better in organic traffic compared with the homepage.

This is why I usually tend to focus the homepage on the brand name and potential brand keywords, especially for already established brands that people already are searching in Google.

What is your take on this? Should homepages be optimized for non-branded keywords, should they have text containing those keywords?

I had no idea home pages are hard to rank for non-branded keywords. What is the reason for this?

In short, most homepages have very little relevant content to speak off. On a normal homepage you usually find the categories and basically the whole structure of the websites, maybe a few links to some articles or products. For what keywords should Google rank for if there is no definite quality content and main keyword?

This is why it's better to evidential your brand in what little content you have. Also implement that in the on-page optimization for the homepage. With that in place you know for sure that at least you will rank well for you own brand name.

Maybe the ranking of the homepage is the reason why some sites banner popular brands of products which in effect gets a good notice from the search engines. For example the mention of milk and you included the most popular brand of milk on your home page. I guess that is good for the SEO of the homepage since the popular brand is already established in the market.
