What if your web host suddenly went out of business?

What would you do if one day you tried to login to your website and found that your web host was out of business. Not just temporarily, but for good.

It sucks but it happens. Try calling them if they even have a toll free number. If you can't do that, hope you regularly backed up your information because it'll be gone.

I generally just avoid being in this situation by going with hosts it will never happen to. I guess in theory it could happen to any but what I mean is that I have only ever gone with extremely reputable and well known hosts. Going to an unknown host to save a few bucks isn't worth it. No offence intended to any not so known web hosting providers

I would try to contact them various ways for backups. when backups not found, i would restore my backup or use services like webarchive to restore at least something.

thats why we need to backup regularly.

Very little chance that GoDaddy would ever go out of business.

GoDaddy might not go out of business but they won't make it easy if you try to leave. Don't tell the company you are discontinuing service before downloading your databases or site copy or you might forfeit them.

How would they know you are leaving? I make regular back up copies of my forum database to my hard drive. That's just standard practice and it doesn't mean that I intend to leave my host company. So long as you don't cancel the service before trying to download a copy, you should be fine.

I have had this happen to me, I had a pagerank 8 site and when they went down I lost my site and everything. It was very annoying at the time but I finally went past it and started a new site but when your host ends and goes down, I don't see any way to avoid that.

That would surely be the last thing any website owner would want from their hosting provider but it happens sometimes and the only thing you can do is to switch to another web hosting provider.

I'm pretty sure that GoDaddy would never go out of business. They have way too many investors and customers to run out of money for their site.

With that said, you will usually go wrong if you go with a new web host company that has just started up recently.

I don't think my web host will suddenly go out of business. In case they are shutting down, I expect at least a week notice. IN the mean time I will transfer my website with another webhost. I don't think a web host will suddenly go out of business, if they do, they will of course send advance notice. However, if you are with small lesser known webhost, I am sure this may happen. Therefore, I always look for reputation before I choose a web host.
