What is the difference between subscriber and fan and follower?

Youtube has the subscriber. Facebook has the fan. And, Twitter has the follower. And, even Google+ says someone is 'in your circles'. So why don't they just all say these people are fans? Why use so many different or confusing names?

Noone wants to look like a copycat, so they all have different names for the 'fan'. Whatever they are called, the fan is the person that will usually like, subscribe or share the content.

I agree because to me, those terms are practically the same in meaning. When you are a fan then it is silly if you you are not a follower and vice versa. With subscriber, that means you want to be notified of the posts or the uploads of a certain user. And if you are not a fan then more likely you are not a subscriber. In other words, being a subscriber and a fan and a follower means the same thing. Maybe just a play of words.

These are the various roles of the audiences or participants in social networks. Every brand manager should learn the value of presence in a social network. For each social network to stand out and to be distinguished by users.
