Yesterday, one of my client asked me (again), like this:
Do comments really count for SEO link building?
And now, when I am make this thread, I see on the "New Post" section a thread:
Blog Commenting is still effective?
So today, I will try to answer it. Hope you like this answer!!
Here's the answer:
Yes they count, and yes they can help your website, but they must play a very small role in any SEO strategy. If you're thinking you can comment your way to #1, you'll be disappointed.
I typically comment on very relevant blog posts, but only when the blog posts are new (it's best to be the first or second comment on a page full of comments).
I also spend more time commenting on sites that send referral traffic tomy clients...
Some good comments have generated hundreds of referral visitors, and that makes the ROI of our work even better. Not only do we get some incremental SEO value, but we also get some direct visits.
Considering how cheap and easy it is to comment effectively, I'm surprised that more SEO firms don't talk about it...
Perhaps it's because of the stigma associated with spam comments.

If you are commenting on a niche related post then yes, its effective.
Remember you have to chk the engagement on that post, if there are real comments and active users, then its beneficial.
Leaving a comment on a dead blog is not useful.

Comments don't hold the weight they once did within the world of organic SEO but that doesn't mean that they don't remain important on several levels even if they happen to be coming from a low page rank no-follow minimal traffic source.
The very fact that I mentioned the attributes above means that commenting on sources that are...
- High page rank
- Do-Follow
- Niched
- High traffic
Locations are ideal when it comes to posting comments.
