I'm just giving you one definition of Grey hat that i found on the internet. And, it does make sense. Though i don't have a specific example to explain it.

Grey hat seo is tech. which comes in between white and black hat seo .Grey hat has some techniques of white hat but it also do unethical seo

Paid linking/buying links could be seen as a form of grey hat. Google frowns on some types of paid links which are used to boost PR/search engine ranking and explicitly demands those links be no-follow. But they also reward some backlinks from high page rank directories that require a submission fee. Seems as if Google is the final decider of what is white/black hat and if it wants, it lets some things slip in between to shades of grey.

Well, I wonder how can they tell if a link is bought or added organically. I mean, I can add links on my blogs to my friends' sites, and with/out reciprocal links. It's similar to how people bought links to other sites...
