Depends on what you're using. Have you tried both?

If you get only organic traffic and you are promoting very competitive niche, you need months before you get some success and ROI and even that is not guaranteed. And who knows, Google can change their algorithm any minute and gets you right back to the start. It can happen to everyone, my friend went from 50k/month to 0.5k/month in a minute after first Penguin was released. I personally didn't have any website hit by Penguin or Panda or whatever, but I have seen both sides of SEO and both sides of spam.

Social media spamming works wonders, if you use fresh methods. I've personally seen methods that got so many conversions already in the first 30 days, that it's a miracle. No one has seen that big first 30-day success with Google traffic since the death of pure blackhat SEO about 6-7 years ago. Gotta think outside of a box, there isn't just Tweetattack, FB blaster and other out-dated software methods. You will probably read about those highly converting methods in some Warrior Special Crap Offers when they are long dead.

Best way to get traffic without SEO is to actually make a site that helps everyday folks like you and me. Once you have that in place, buy a few targeted banner placements on sites like buyads.com.

I have a website for a certain niche, it's membership based and it's 40$ for 1 month of premium information. I have 2 friends, one of them is doing Twitter promotion through "spam" software, other is doing Youtube promotion through other "spam" software. I have the same Youtube software as this friend of mine, but he works on a much higher level than me.
Both are making 5-digit numbers per month, none of them does SEO. So, I cloned my website and made another 2 for the same niche, same information and same layout, just changed the text a little bit. I will be doing 30 minutes of SEO optimization per day on my site which has a PR3, DA3 and a small Facebook group of targeted fans. 1 cloned website will be promoted with Youtube technique, other by Twitter and I will share the results publicly, just to give people the idea of other side of blackhat. We will start in about 1-2 weeks and somewhere around October there will probably already be a huge difference in every website's income.

Can't give tips, techniques or software. It's all public, but hard to find and many people will probably read about those techniques in WSOs 12 months after those techniques are dead (usual WarriorForum scam scheme).

My first recommendation is the social media which is the largest pasture for marketing your website. You just have to be creative so you can get more traffic with effective marketing. There are also the popular blogs that you can visit and post comments in a way of promoting your site. Or maybe you can be a guest blogger and again, you can promote your website by way of the signature.
