Yes. Facebook did for example and was manly word of mouth. I never see Facebook.com show up in google results when I search.

I guess I have to agree that it is not SEO that is making us live, so to speak. In the beginning there was no SEO and it was only in the past few years that people learned about the traffic that comes from the search engines via the search list. If you do not do SEO methods on your site but you are promoting your site in social media then that is equivalent to spreading backlinks which is also an SEO method.

Lots of Facebook results on Google. It's a highly trafficked site, of course, some of the public pages will get crawled and be found on Google.

Lots of Facebook pages on Google. That's to be expected considering how many people post there daily (on page SEO) and how many backlinks to the site's pages.

Well, my fanpage came up on search results when looking for my blog. There are also times that status messages and individual posts shows up.

That's a good thing, you must get lots of traffic to your Facebook fan page then.

I have no idea on the traffic to my Facebook page from search engines, but I see a good increase of followers each day.

I'd consider that more valuable than random click throughs from the search engines as these people (coming from Facebook) are more targeted and have a better idea of what your blog post is going to be about before they get there.

Yeah. They won't really "like" the page if they don't like it, right?
Another thing, is doing so can be considered SEO?

SEO is done by sites that do not have their branding or do net get relevant customers. But big brands like Apple, Facebook , Google.....and lots lots more...do they need SEO...????

NO...because they have that branding in them besides this these sites do not need to be rank on Google...thery are getting everything without Google...So why they should.
So it not compulsory to do SEO for each site.

Thanks

SEO is necessary for any new and existing Web sites. But some sites don't need it like Facebook, Twitter.
Mostly sites need SEO for increasing their visibility in search engine and also traffic.

Social media optimization and search engine optimization are inter-linked. If you're doing SMO, you're likely helping your rank in search engines, in one way or another, as determined by that particular search engine's algorithm.

In the first place, you have to know what SEO is for. And if your answer is for getting traffic then you will realize that there are many other ways to get traffic. First is from your circle of friends and relatives who can lend a hand in visiting your website. That is the very basic approach. But more realistically, you can cultivate your social media accounts for that purpose. Do your marketing in social media by promoting your website. There are also the so called backlinks that you can post in other websites like blogs or forum. So if you don’t mind the SEO but you are doing other chores to obtain traffic then that’s it.
