What's a link scheme?

Link schemes are bad for SEO. But what are they?

Here's Google's answer to that question.

Links intended to manipulate PageRank

Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web

Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

SEO Michael Martinez got on his soap box about link schemes recently. It’s understandable. There is a lot of confusion about what a link scheme is, especially among SEOs. So I’d think there is at least an equal amount of confusion among non-SEO small business owners.

A link scheme is any linking that is used to make Google think your site is more popular than it really is.

This is important to remember as reciprocal links are all about manipulating search engines. However, I would not rule out a few reciprocal links as they are useful for real traffic if you can get the backlink from a really good niche site that is similar to yours.

When you are doing paid backlinking, generating backlinks from low-quality sites, building sites just for backlinking purpose or using link wheel or private blog networks for backlinks purpose, it will be termed as link scheme. Well the primary purpose of backlinks is to get high position on SERP, however, if you are generating low quality backlinks, it is considered black hat SEO.

I guess buying and selling links should be on top of the list because it is like manipulating the search engine ranking. It is actually not being fair to the other sites and it is good if all the other search engines will follow the lead of Google in curtailing the malpractice in SEO work. I have been thinking for a long time that if you are good with the SEO tricks then you don’t even need to upload contents because you can easily get traffic.
