How do you keep your backlinks from looking too 'obvious'?

My biggest issue with backlinking is knowing how to make them look natural or keep them from appearing too obvious. Please share your best techniques for creating natural looking backlinks (including quantity, quality, frequency, etc).

If you have just one backlink from a site, that might be a sign of backlinking. Just think about this, most times, when you are a regular forum member, you will have multiple backlinks in your signature line and this indicates you are a regular on that site. The same is true for blogs. If you read that blog regularly, you are likely to leave a comment every time, so you will have more than one backlink. But, if you were just link building, you might only have just one backlink such as from a blog comment. My point being that you should try to become a member of a site and participate before leaving any backlinks and then when you get a backlink it will look well earned and not fake.

It would depend on the age of your site as to how many backlinks you could get quickly. It would be reasonable to expect an older site to have more backlinks already and gain them at a more steady pace then a very new site.
