Why are so many people in a rush to get backlinks?

Sometimes, it's discouraging when you only have a handful of backlinks. But, if those backlinks are highest quality, coming from well respected sites, then that might be all you need to rank well in Google. Don't get in a rush to backlink, as that can lead to less than reputable spam linking practices. Just focus on publishing high quality content as suggested and you will naturally gain backlinks from others who enthusiastically backlink to you.

So many people mistake quantity for quality backlinks and assume that getting more backlinks equals better search engine rankings. Really you don't need to rush backlinking. Just getting two good backlinks a day will net you well over 700 high quality backlinks a year. That's way more than most sites have anyway. And, with a good backlink, there is less chance that your site will get penalized for linking from a bad neighborhood.

The theory (assumption) that satisfied customers will create back links on their own is a joke. I own a service business and manage SEO for dozens of others. I can count on one hand the number of unsolicited links from customers in 6 years. I have ranked #1 for my main keyword for 5 years (with low quantity/high quality links) and had I waited for "natural" links I'd be out of business. As an example, we do 30+ jobs a year via Angies List, which is built on reviews and we are lucky to see 10% even bother making a review.

Normal (non SEO/geeks) people don't bother and don't care how google built their algorithms. It might not be the perfect way to manage the serps but it's all we have and if you don't play the game...you don't rank. It's that simple.

The OP is correct about the quality comment but absolutely wrong about "natural" links. It might work that way for hobby blogs or info type sites but for business, don't hold your breath.

The best backlinking is done slowly and gradually with backlinks coming from within posts on a blog or do follow social networking site, rather than from random blog comments.

Since backlinks effect search engine page rank many people are rushing to get backlinks. However, most of the people do not know that excess backlink and linking to bad websites can harm your website. You should always backlink to quality websites. Try for organic backlink. Organic backlink is when people voluntarily backlink your website to authoritative websites such as dot org or dot gov websites.

As the saying goes, joining the bandwagon is the current trend. But in fairness to website owners who are scrambling to get more backlinks out there, the backlinks may be so effective in terms of traffic that they get. I also think that the backlinks can really give you a substantial amount of traffic because we did a sort of experiment with it. But for the excess backlinks, I didn’t know that it can harm your site.
