Here's an interesting thought. What if Google couldn't access your home page menu (navigational) system? Such as if, the menu links on your homepage menu links could not be crawled. That means your interior pages won't get found or indexed. So, would there be an alternate way for Google's search bots to reach interior pages?
When I had a static HTML site, I always kept a plain HTML link at the bottom of the home page that led to a secondary 'article' page that listed all the relevant sub-pages on site.
Often this informal site map got indexed and had good ranking in search engines as well as any other page. And, all the pages linking from that page got good position too.
This was my back up for getting indexed. And, whenever I added a new page to the site, I would simply add another descriptive text link on the 'site map' page and within a short time, the new page would get indexed too.
Just saying, with all the things that can go wrong with fancy linking structures, there's no reason not to have a backup.

better off building a simple xml sitemap and sticking it in the folder - they'll crawl it then
