I was thinking, would it be better to promote someone else's gig on PPC websites rather than a category page? I know its seems a bit daft when i could just promote one of my own gigs, but if i targeted search engine optimisation, etc.. on facebook, google adwords promoting a link building service, im sure this would work well. I think?

Web 2.0 are free blogging platforms, like Blogger, Wordpress, HubPages and Squidoo. I mostly utilize Squidoo.
I've found better results promoting a category and using the term "From $3" or "starting at $3" using PPC.
However, if you do promote a specific service you should select one that has many up votes. This really does help conversion for people that have never used this site before. If you can arrange a coupon from the seller to give out as well, this will certainly get buys.
One more thing, soon we plan on releasing the "Buy one Get one" and "deals/sales" features which would help with PPC as the buyers will feel compelled to order because of the urgency or order more because they will get one free.

Yes, the blogger blog would be a Web 2.0 property. If it is SEO related, then you can put the rss feed from Seocheckout in the sidebar and probably get some clicks, as long as there is a decent amount of traffic.
