Could you ever write for an authoritative magazine?

Getting published in a local or regional magazine might not be so hard, but the pay is not worthwhile. But, could you ever get published in an authoritative magazine such as The Smithsonian?

I think it would be worth a damn good try. If the first you don't succeed, try try again, right?
I would say "Ta hell with it!" and do it. The worse that could happen is getting denied, but you can always keep trying.

I would love to be able to get published like that one day!

If you are an accredited expert in a niche or some type of professor for a university, then you have a very good chance of being published in one of these authoritative magazines. Though you would need very impressive credentials and thorough research to get the job. I'm sure the pay would be very good though.

They would obviously be looking to hire someone with a proven record in that specific industry, maybe even someone who was previously published. At minimum a degree in the field would be required before working for this type of project.

Magazines such as National Geographic are usually hard to write for as the writers usually live out in the wilds studying their subject for years before publishing. These articles are not essay or opinion based but backed up by years of research and in the field experience.

Though I'm well versed in some subjects, I don't think I have the credentials or credibility in the niche to get hired by an offline publication if their standards are so high.

I do not think that I would have the credentials either to do it but it would be a huge honor.

My forte is writing pet articles. I had several published articles in a major pet magazine here. However, those articles were from my collaboration with another writer. It's just sad that my name did not appear because the magazine required one author only (that is to avoid issues in payment). Perhaps I had written 3 articles, those were my solo writings although they were published not with my name as author. Anyway, those published articles gave me the confidence to write more and also to submit articles to websites.

I have published my articles in the daily newspapers based in my home country. If you term these newspapers to be authoritative (they have hundreds of thousand sales), then my answer is yes, I have written for authoritative publications. However, if you mean to ask whether I have written for international publication, my answer is no.
