The Nightmare of giving out contact information.

I have to make a forum post about giving contact information via conversations and the nightmare of giving away your contact information. I shouldn't even have to make this thread but unfortunately I feel the need to post.

1. Do not ever give out your contact information. You don't personally know anyone on the internet. It doesn't matter if you have spoken to them for years. Rule #1, don't trust anyone. The Nightmare of giving out contact information.

2. Don't contact the person whom gave you their contact information. 99.9999% of the time they are trying to scam you. They need your information to help scam you.

Scamming/Fraud on the internet is the #1 crime via the internet. Usually no authority can help you because it's too frequent and there isn't enough resources to help. Also, a lot of the scamming is across borders and then other rules and regulations apply. It's a total nightmare!

Once the victim is scammed they feel violated, insecure, etc. It's a horrible feeling to have been scammed. Please do not give out contact information and report messages that have this information. Usually staff is quick to find it, sometimes they miss it, sometimes it gets unseen. You can help by reporting these type of messages with contact information.

Skype contact information is the #1 thing asked via conversations. Do NOT give it away. These users whom ask for your skype or give theirs away so easily is trying to scam you. Then you would submit a ticket, and the only thing staff can do is determine if you have been scammed off-site from a Seocheckout user and possibly ban the account if there is evidence. Seocheckout doesn't like fraud, Seocheckout has absolutely no tolerance for fraud of any kind.

Please do not give your contact information, or contact anyone off-site. Report any messages that tell you contact off-site. Seocheckout support can help you onsite usually, but they can not assist off-site.

Thank you so much for this post. It's all true, everything you said. And, very relevant. There are so many scammers on the internet and in real life and also trusting people who do not realize they are going to be scammed. Scammers will try to lure you into giving out contact info saying they will pay you directly etc, but it's just a scam. The only way to guarantee you get paid for a gig is by dealing directly through seocheckout.

Everyone needs to read this post. Too many times people do not read the TOS and then they claim they did not know but if they did what they were suppose to and follow the rules then there would not be as many issues.

Excellent post. We've seen so many people attempt to use direct payments/contact as a scam method, this post is certainly warranted (and needed).

Thank you! Hopefully it can help someone else and let them know what to expect if they give out their contact info.

Exactly. It would be a nightmare to get screwed over so to speak if you did give out contact info and paid and then they did not do the order or something.

This is something people should be required to read before using the Internet, as there are so many people that are oblivious to the kinds of people that will try and steal your personal information. I think this is very true and very relevant.

How can they scam me if I give them my Skype?

Most likely they will try to get you to do work up front with promise of payment afterward.

And, since there is not way to ensure payment when working on your own, you would likely get scammed out of payment after performing the work.

Another thing, a friend of mine warned me about adding people as Skype is considered DDOS central. So now, I don't add anyone I don't actually know in real life.

I do not know how it's done just that it's possible when you add the wrong person on Skype. There is also a risk they would have you download a file via Skype and it could be infected with malware such as keylogger that could steal your Bank/Paypal and login details on various sites. These are just a few of the reasons not to add people on Skype.

There are all kinds of scams that someone could pull on you, some on site, some trying to lure you off site. A buyer doesn't have to lure you off site to scam you out of work/money though. You just have to be very careful and abide by the site TOS, report any suspicious behavior and report anything to staff that doesn't seem right. Then you will be OK

Your friend was right. Once your Skype name is exposed, your IP address is exposed as well.
