Do you allow forum members to give negative reputation?

On many forums there is a plus/minus or positive/negative rating system for discussions/users. Do you allow your forum members to leave negative feedback for a comment or discussion? Or, do you only allow a discussion/response to be liked by the user?

Seems like this negative rating could be a bad thing as it could be used maliciously. Of course, if you have a trading area, then you would want a way to add or subtract from a person's trader reputation so others would know if they could be trusted.

I do not like the idea of negative feedback so I would not allow this on a site.

Maybe it could lead to hurt feelings, especially if it's made public who hsa offered the negative reputation.

So true. There is not a reason for this and it is not right at all.

Because you want to encourage unity, not animosity, or else you have friction between your forum members.

And when you have that it can only lead to some very bad things.

No real reason to allow negative feedback except on the trader's subforum where a buyer/seller could provide positive or negative feedback on someone with whom they had done business.

Letting someone post mean comments about your forum members is not the smartest idea as it can lead to flaming and wars.

No there is no reason to belittle someone and make them feel bad.

I do not think that it is a good idea at all. No reason to start something online like this.

Yes it could and then it could backfire on you and your site.

That could result in many lost forum members, especially if the person who got their feelings hurt had many friends onsite and they all left together.

I do not allow negative reputation on my website because I think people abuse it too much against staff they don't like or even members which then will affect others and I just think that it is misused in many different ways.

And, anything that could drive a wedge between forum members is not a good thing. Likes and positive feedback help build community members esteem and is definitely a good thing.

I agree, I try to remove as many things that I feel will tear others apart from my community. I want the best for my community. Not the worst.

I do not feel that negative reps should be given. Everyone has a right to their own opinion and no one should be able to say it is wrong.

So true Miken. Everyone can feel how they want and no one should belittle them.

On SMF, I believe there is a way to get negative karma (and positive), which is the same as a positive or negative rating for the user. I disabled this function on my SMF forum as I don't think it's necessary.

Yes, these type of functions are waste. forums are made for sharing stuff, making new friends etc. there is no need for -ve +ve rep. function.

The only reason for allowing negative reputation is when one member is scammed by another member in a forum transaction. Then they should be required to leave a note with the reputation as to why they are giving the negative mark to that person.

With my experience on a local forum with members who are so dynamic, that negative reputation is a time bomb. For sure that will be used by members who have a grudge with other members. In the debate board, that negative reputation will surely emerge because debaters would do everything to win the argument. It’s not actually a board for debates but an off topic board that those fond of arguing have turned into a debate board. Oh well, talk of ardent fans, they are out to fight for their idols.
