Do you like really long forum discussions on your forum?

I love the discussions that go on for pages and pages; with hundreds of responses. They are like micro communities within the forum and always get the best traffic from both forum members and search engines. These threads should be stickied as they are perpetually popular.

So for me, really long forum discussions with lots of interactivity is a good thing. I love seeing this on my own forum and other forums.

What is your policy for handling really long forum discussions? Do you encourage them? Do you split these off to make smaller discussions which are more manageable?

These discussions can often go off topic, so you will need to monitor them for side tracked conversations and either split them off to new topics or steer the conversation back to the main topic.

I thoroughly enjoy long forum discussions! Yes, they can get off topic, however it can lead down an interesting road. The various angles and perspectives can make you see things in a different light. Perhaps giving you some ideas, or closure to an issue that has been eating away at you. You may even pick up on some compatibilities of a forum member, that could be of some use to you.

As long as it stays respectful, I like taking part and observing to see which direction it goes Do you like really long forum discussions on your forum?

I am regularly going to a forum that has very long threads. From what I have noticed, there are threads with hundreds of pages already. That goes to show that long discussions are not a discouragement to the community albeit it even encourages members to post. But in fairness to those topics, they are interesting hence the posts. When I was new in the forum, I was avoiding long threads because I don’t want to read so many posts. But one writer advised me to just read the first page for the original post and the last page for the latest comments. That’s cool.
