Should you allow moderators to ban members?

Would you trust your moderators to know which members to ban? And, how liberal are your moderator permissions when it comes to banning? For instance, maybe a moderator can temp ban a member for specific number of days for trouble making.

You can always unban a member who was previously banned if you feel your moderator acted too hastily. Of course, I would not trust every person with the ban ability as some people can't handle the responsibility.

I might assign a global/super mod with the power to ban spammers. This could be a workable solution rather than allowing all mods to ban.

As a Global Moderator of my own forum, I've never had to permanently banned anyone. Only temporary banning seemed to get the point across. I think for a permanent ban it should be an executive decision made between the other moderators, or with the administrator.

Banning a member by the moderator would depend on the owner's trust on the moderator. Some moderators are serious with their job that they fully know the member so they have good reason to ban an offending member. However, for me, it is better that banning is left to the owner or admin so there will not be any confusion regarding the matter. It's a disaster when a moderator bans a member and the admin would retract it. That would create animosity among the officials of the forum.
