Can you temporarily mute a forum member?

If someone has been making bullying type comments on your forum, can you temporarily mute them so they can browse the forum but not post?

You could move the offending forum member into a special category where they could read posts but not respond to any. Of course, you would want to let them know why this action had been done and how long the punishment would last.

I have never really heard of this option but I rather like it. I think that a mute future would be excellent.

On one forum where I was a member, they had a jail where all 'muted' members could go to talk and have conversations with other members. And, the only place on the forum where the person could post was in 'jail' subforum. These forum members were temporarily placed into a usergroup who's interaction was limited to that specific subforum. It was the ideal way to handle trolls without banning them.

I have never really heard of this option but I rather like it. I think that a mute future would be excellent.

To mute someone you would just place them into a special subgroup or category of member that cannot reply to posts or send messages. When the person's penalty has expired they would be able to move back to their regular category.

Tempers flare and sometimes bad things are said. Offering the person a cooling off period is a good idea and might help them rethink their position and reform ways.

If a forum member really wants to be part of your forum, they will accept this penalty without too much fuss. However, this type of punishment will only inflame a troll and make them want to do worse once the ban or mute has been lifted.

Muting a member is not only because of a flame war. I remember one forum who mutes spammers who would still log in everyday and lurking maybe or waiting for the mod to disappear. He doesn’t know that he couldn’t post anymore. That way, the forum gets a legal traffic from that spammer. However, the spammer vanishes after several days, maybe when he discovers that he is already muted.
