When someone wants their account deleted.

What would you do if a very long time forum member came to you and asked that their account be deleted along with all the forum posts? Would you oblige this person?

Obviously, I would want to know the reason why. I'm not just going to delete an account because someone asks it. That would mean many hundreds or thousands of posts gone.

It seems like an unfair request as the forum owner owns all the posts. So without justifiable reason, such as the person is being stalked and fearful of someone finding them online via the forum, I would leave up the posts.

It seems like an unfair request as the forum owner owns all the posts.

And, it says that in the forum TOS when you sign up. The posts become the property of the forum owner to use and that means they can keep up the posts as long as they want. The person posting has given permission for this.

I would want to know the reason as well. That could mean a lot of posts gone. Ask them to compromise, or have a statement saying once you post something it is the ownership of the forum now.

Wouldn't it just be possible to change their username so they are no longer associated with that account? Or, at least change the display name so others don't know that person is the one who made the posts. That could be a good compromise.

If I am the owner of the forum, I don't think I would accede to such a request especially if that member has countless of posts. The forum is like a real society composed of people who are engaged in conversations. It's just that in the forum, the conversations are recorded. And the recording is the content. Deleting the content of your forum is like throwing away money. And even deleting the account of a member does not sit well with me. I would probably decline and would explain length why I don't want to delete the account and the posts as well.
