I used to work on a site that was opinions. I started one on spanking. Took off right away. Advocates of it, people said no way would they spank... got very heated.

Spanking of a kid should never be outlawed. You have no control over them otherwise. My dad use to whip me with a belt and I learned not to do bad things. Hot topics

There is a difference between spanking and a beating. I was spanked and I turned out just fine. I am not against it.

Impassioned discussions or rants are fine so long as they are not targeted at specific forum members. Those discussions need to be taken to private or off forum.

Mine is usually the general "hello/goodbye" thread that I make and some announcements that I post. Those tend to be the biggest "hot" topics around my site.

Did you ever split off your hello/goodbye thread if it blossomed into a really good discussion? I have done that a few times with some of my forum threads and they take on a life of their own. It's amazing how this sparks forum member interest.

What is a hello/goodbye thread? Like when you first join a site and then decide to leave it?

Some people say hello/goodbye or good morning/goodnight when they visit the forum, especially those who spend a lot of time on the forum. A general chat thread that allowed people to comment there when they show up or leave for the day would be less messy than 100 different threads started for that purpose.
