Dealing with duplicate posts

How do you deal with duplicate posts? Do you merge or delete the posts? Or, do you leave up the posts?

You could merge the posts or delete the most recent if it doesn't have responses. Ask the poster to search before making a post so there is less risk of posting duplicate discussions.

I think that if you have the time it would be in the best interest to merge them if you could.

Merging the post would be the best option. This will create a fuller thread I feel and yet you will still have all the content from the duplicate posts.

Easiest way to deal with duplicate content is to scan your site using copyscape.com . It tells you what content is copied and what is unique ;)

So then would you delete this or would you merge it with others?

Merging them is the best way so you are not losing content.

Thanks for this idea. I will use this for my own forum and the forums that I manage as it will help me identify copied material that could hurt the site's search engine ranking in Google.

Can you run your entire site on this?

I would not delete them, but rather merge with the existing thread if I could.

I tend to just delete the duplicate but leave the original. No use in having duplicates laying around the site.

What if there are a few or many responses to the duplicate thread before you get to delete it? Would you merge them or how would you handle that?

I say that merging them would be the best option. I agree duplicate content is not good but some of the posts may have valuable info to them.

I just leave it the way it is or use the merge option. Most of the time duplicate posts happen unintentionally. Several times when I'm trying to post a comment it suddenly hangs, so I would repost it, then I would see that two identical posts have been made. When this happens I would sometimes delete the post if there's an option but if there's no delete option I would try to merge it, or just leave it as is with a comment like "duplicate post - sorry, please delete it."
