Do you require members to confirm their email address on sign up?

When a guest is signing up to be a forum member, do you require that they confirm their email address? And, does this cut down on spammers and automatic registrations?

Email confirmation is standard on most forums.

Though some new forums choose not to use email confirmation as a convenience to members.

Well it's up to the admins of the forums.

Many forums allow registration only after confirmation of email id. All most all the forum software has the setting for this IMO.

I agree that it can be a pain when you are wanting to start posting, and do not get the confirmation right away. There are a few sites that I signed up for that never sent me the confirmation email. I can see how it can cut down on spammers, but if you are not going to get the email that is not really helping the site either if you are really going to post and be a meaningful member.

I totally support the confirmation of email issued by some forums to reduce spamming. So yes it ideal to instruct your subscribers to confirm their email before posting on your site.

I think that it is essential if you do not want spam or as much spam on your site. I think that it is a great idea to do this.

I agree to this one. Even if one can create so many emailaddresses, it is still important to require a member to submit and confirm an
email address. And for further validation, the email sent by the forum should
be replied to by the new member. Personally, I am annoyed by those email
confirmation required by some forums. But on the other side of the fence, a
little chore of validating is one proof that the new member will abide by the
regulations of the forum.
